Miura Anjin (William Adams) was the first Englishman to come to Japan.
In 1600, he was cast ashore in Bungo (Oita Prefecture) on the Dutch ship Liefde (navigator), and arrived in Hirado in 1613. During that time, Tokugawa Ieyasu employed him as a diplomatic advisor, having him live in what is now Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and giving him a stipend of 250 koku.
It is said that Anjin's influence was a major factor in the fact that the Netherlands and Britain were allowed to trade during the Keicho era, and that a trading post was established in Hirado.
Later, he worked under Cox, the head of the British trading post in Hirado, and died of an illness in Hirado in 1620.
The location of his grave is unclear, but Miura Anjin's grave was erected in 1954, and the couple's grave was created in 1964, the 400th anniversary of Adams' birth, when a pebble was brought from his wife's grave in England as a symbol of her soul and buried with Adams' grave.

Years ago, in 1980, I saw the TV series 'Shogun' in which Richard Chamberlain played the character Blackthorne based on the real Miura Anjin as he is known in Japan; Will Adams. I wouldn't have known then that, though it triggered a love affair with Japan that has lasted till the present, 42 years later I would fulfil an ambition to visit and pay my respects to him at his grave. A couple of tears were shed for a fellow Englishman who, though he became a legend in his own lifetime, felt marooned on the other side of the world. This place isn't as difficult to find as I at first thought it might be and there is plenty of signage pointing the way. It is sort of isolated giving one the space to contemplate his amazing life and what he achieved and sort of links to his townhouse in Hirado, now an upmarket confectionary shop.

I love the story of William Adams. Ship wrecked off the east coast of Kyushu to become one of the first foreign samurai. Hirado is full of history, especially connected with foreign trade. Wonderful little port town.

三浦按針(ウィリアム アダムス)は初めて日本に来たイギリス人で徳川家康の外交顧問として仕えました。安針の力により平戸にイギリスやオランダ商館を設置することになったと言われています。1620年に55歳で平戸にて病没。1954年に安針の埋葬地として伝承されてきた崎方公園内にあるこの地に三浦按針の墓を作ったそうです。

Miura Anjin, an English man, happened to come to Hirado, because his ship “De Liefde” was wrecked. Then he became a diplomatic advisor of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun in Edo Period. Then he decided to stay in Japan. Thinking of his adventurous life, I was much impressed by this visit to his grave.

1600年オランダ船リーフデ号の航海長として大分県に漂着した日本に来た初めてのイギリス人です。平戸にもその後やって来ているようです。家康は外交顧問として250石を与えて召し抱え現在の神奈川県三浦市に住んでいたそうです。オランダやイギリスとの通商が幕府によって許可され平戸に商館を置いたのは三浦按針の功績と言われています。平戸イギリス商館長のもとで働き1620年平戸でなくなりました。アダムス誕生400年にあたり整備されたようです。

This is well done tribute to William Adams known to Japanese as Miura Anjin, and to fans of James Clavell's 1975 novel Shogun as the fictional John Blackthorn. Peaceful, quiet with good free parking close by. Signs at sit in both English and Japanese.

オランダ塀を上って、旅館「旗松亭」の脇の細長い坂をさらに上ると、崎方公園の中に小さなお墓がありました。江戸時代に外交顧問として活躍したウィリアムズアダムス(三浦按針)のお墓です。この方に縁ある建物が、平戸市にはたくさん残っています。

「三浦按針の墓」をご存じでしょうか？ 始めて日本に来たイギリス人の三浦按針(ウィリアム･アダムス)のお墓です。
1600年オランダ船が豊後に漂着し日本へ、徳川家康の外交顧問として仕え平戸には1613年にきました。その後平戸イギリス商館で活躍し1620年のこの平戸で病死しました。
場所は緑溢れる崎方公園内にあります。良い環境です。

イギリス人として初めて来日したウィリアム･アダムスは徳川家康に重用されて旗本となり、「三浦按針」という日本名も与えられた。55歳の時に平戸で病死して葬られたが、埋葬地は定かでない。
現在の墓は1954年に建立されたものであり、自然石を用いた墓石は日本風であるが、「三浦按針之墓」の文字の上に十字架が刻まれている。
