This is a Taisho Roman hot spring resort located in the mountains about 50 minutes by car from Yamagata Airport.
You can't drive to the spa town, so you park your car in the parking lot in front of the spa town (about an 8-minute walk) and call the hotel shuttle bus.
From the parking lot, there is the Ginzan River in the valley of the mountain, and there are hot spring inns and foot baths on both sides.
The Ginzan River was very beautiful and rainbow trout were swimming.
In the evening, when the gas lights were lit, the nostalgia of the spa town was wonderful.

We got here just before 9am and managed to get the first shuttle bus. This place has spectacular view. Some shops only open at 10am. Curry bun was nice.

This traditional charming Japanese Onzen village is a must to visit in Winter (Dec-Feb) where you can capture the heritage style wooden ryokan with some snow. Plan to stay overnight here by your own car or hotel transfer from Yamagata Train station is the most convenience.
The lighting at night is normally closed around 9pm.

…wander round or take the perfect picture. Even during a snowstorm, it was really busy. However that’s to be expected when visiting somewhere this beautiful and I am really glad we made the trip there as it truly is a stunning place.

When talking about Yamagata, I think many people may think of Ginzan Hot Spring, Yamadera or Zao. Apart from these, Yamagata Prefecture is hardly the place that everyone thinks of as a must-visit place. If it is winter, I think Ginzan Hot Spring is a beautiful scenic spot that many people dream of visiting. In addition to imagining the beautiful snow scenery in the photos, the main thing is that you can enjoy the rare scenery here. It is undeniable how popular it is in winter. If Even though I visited once, like many people, I am still stuck in the imagination of the photos.
If you want to visit Ginzan Hot Spring and enjoy the beautiful scenery, I think the only way is to book a room early. For more than two people, you may be able to book a hotel or a nearby hot spring hotel. Winter is its most popular season, so you can only book early. If you are alone and without companions, then staying in a hot spring hotel is obviously not in compliance with the regulations, so you can only go back and forth in one day.
A one-day round trip to Ginzan Onsen is feasible. If you depart from Tokyo to the nearest Oishida Station and then transfer to a bus, the departure time should preferably match the bus time. There are four buses from Oishida to Ginzan Onsen. The first bus is at 09:50, and the next one is at 12:30. If you want to watch the sunset, it is recommended to take the 12:30 bus.
When I went to Ginzan Onsen myself, I stayed in Sendai. There are several ways to get there from Sendai. The first way is to take the Yamagata Shinkansen to Oishida and then transfer to a bus to Ginzan Onsen. The other way is to take the bus there first. Transfer to Yamagata and go to Oishida, which saves you the trouble of not having many trains on the Senzan Line. Furthermore, you have an extra way to go back to Sendai at night. Although there are trains that can go back to Sendai, you need to change trains at an unmanned station. Consider this. Next, it is most convenient and trouble-free to take the bus back to Sendai from Yamagata. The fare is not expensive and only costs 1,000 yen. It is a comfortable bus ride back to Sendai West Exit.
This time I went to Ginzan Hot Spring in February as an example. Although I looked up the sunset time of 17:20 on the day I went there in that month, if I take that day as an example, the best time would be to take the bus after 14:00, but that’s not the case. Because the trains stopping at Oishida are not very frequent.
relationship, so I would recommend everyone to take the noon bus to Ginzan Hot Spring.
Go to the restroom before getting on the bus. Because there are so many tourists going to Ginzan Onsen in winter, it is recommended to wait in front of the bus stop early to avoid having no seats after arriving. I have to say that it is also because of the time when everyone arrives at Oishida Station. They are all concentrated during that time period. There are really not many people at other times. The stop sign for waiting for the bus is in front of a white building on the left side of the station. There are heaters inside. If you don’t feel cold, you can also stand directly. Wait for the bus in front of the stop sign. The current fare is 1,000 yen, so it is recommended to prepare cash.
My itinerary to Ginzan Onsen that day was as follows. First, I set off from Sendai to Xinzhuang. The reason why I went there was that I wanted to take the 12:30 bus. It turned out that I planned to take the 09:50 bus in the morning, but after After careful consideration, I chose the 12:30 train. I could have lunch on the train before going to Oishida. After getting off the train, I could use the restroom and walk around. Also, because of winter, it wasn’t just snow. There was also a strong cold wind. In the uncertain situation, the highest principle was to eat first. It happened that we could catch the 12:30 bus from Xinzhuang to Oishida.
There is a restaurant inside Oishida Station. The station only has a waiting area, a shop and a restaurant. If you are coming with luggage, there are lockers for use. Basically, this station is not big, so you can wander around at will. It takes half an hour to walk around, unless
If you need to leave luggage or eat, there are not many seats in the station, so you can just go to the restroom and wait for the bus nearby.
If you want to buy or sell something in the store, I suggest you buy it before getting on the bus, because you take the last bus back to Oishida Station and all the shops and restaurants are closed. The time you spend there is just scrolling on your phone and waiting for the restroom.
It takes more than half an hour to get to Ginzan Onsen from Oishida Station. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the bus stop to the hot spring area. In winter, due to snow and slippery conditions, the walking time may be longer. It will be a little more, but don’t worry
Direction, because when you get off the bus, you just need to follow the crowd, because everyone is heading to the same destination.
Ginzan Hot Spring itself is a hot spring town, and its scale is not very large. If you walk back and forth, not including the time to see things, it will take about 40-50 minutes. As for why it looks good when taking pictures, it is because of the building itself and the surrounding environment. The atmosphere is really indescribable.
When I came to the hot spring street and walked to the bridge and looked in the direction of the hot spring street, I cried out in my heart, "Wow", it turns out that such a place really exists. In fact, when shooting there, whether it is shooting scenery or people, it creates a The best thing is that when you look back at the photos, you can feel that it is a beautiful place, especially the moment when the snow is falling, it is really a beautiful picture.
I took a lot of beautiful pictures here and spent a long time waiting for the sunset. I wrote postcards to my friends and family while taking a break and drinking coffee. There is also a shop here that sells stamps. service, there is a red mailbox outside, which is convenient for everyone to send blessings to friends far away. It can really be sent to the hands of friends.
Here you can find a cafe or take a footbath. Although it is a beautiful sight to take a footbath and enjoy the beautiful scenery, it seems that there is no such imagination in winter. When I was there, there were really few people actually sitting there. Most people take a footbath indoors to drink coffee and eat. Some of them may be waiting for the sunset because they don’t take enough photos.
I just took pictures and looked at this. It took a long time. From the time I arrived here to the time I left, it took about four and a half hours. It seems that I haven’t seen them all, but I haven’t been to all the stores, but Notoya is a must-visit attraction for most people. Taking a photo is indispensable. It is a popular spot for taking photos. You must seize the time when you can take photos, because that is where everyone's first goal is when they come here.
As for the highlight is shooting the scenery of Ginzan Hot Spring before sunset, I believe that is the main purpose for you and me to come here. Unless you are a tourist living here, I believe you can’t wait for the scene of the all-black hot spring street lighting up, but you have to What I personally like most is the moment when the lights start before sunset, and the sky slowly changes. It is recommended that you check the sunset time of the day before coming, and just wait half an hour beforehand.
If you are a photography enthusiast, it is recommended to bring a tripod. If you are a simple tourist like me, then try to stay still, because there will be more and more people in the future, but don’t forget the last part because of the scenery. The last bus time is 18:21. Don’t wait until 18:10 to go back. When you come to the place where you are waiting for the bus and see a bunch of people queuing, you may cry because there are so many people. If you are crowded and are not sure whether you can get on the bus, it is best to wait for the bus at 17:45. You can be sure that you can get on the bus and you may also have a seat.
It’s hard to say how difficult it is to wait for the bus in winter, but the snow falling there at night and the weather really require patience. Although I don’t know if it was because of stupidity, I waited there for more than 40 minutes for the bus, and the snow on my backpack , are not enough to explain how cold it is there. What can be comforting is that the excitement of coming here has forgotten the cold weather. I am very happy to see the beautiful scenery here today, which is deeply remembered in my heart.
The winter in Yamagata brings me unforgettable memories every time I come here. I feel not only the cold but also the warmth of human kindness. In my travel memories, Yamagata is a very special place. This time I came to Ginzan Hot Spring. , although it is a one-day trip, but it is full of memories
Afterwards, it was another experience. This is a very good location, especially for those who like to take pictures. If you come to Yinshan Hot Spring in winter, you will not be disappointed.

The town is relatively small, just only one straight street with ryokans, cafe & shops alongside. You can explore the town within an hour. The view is nice. It can be reached by train and connect the local bus. Local bus only have around 5-6 schedule. Extra schedule might be available but without prior notification. Bus arrangement from train station is good as bus company staff here to get people lined up. On the way back, people need to be disciplined themselves to queue up. (Obviously, some tourists wouldn’t do this.)
If you have plenty of time on your journey, you can pay a visit.

This time I drove there. As soon as I arrived at Sendai Airport, I went straight to Ginzan Hot Spring. Although there was snow along the road, it was easy to drive and worth going. However, it was difficult to find a parking space. It is not recommended to go if there is no snow. When there is snow, it is more atmospheric and easy to take photos. It has a feeling of the Yamato era.

Since I was traveling with my dog, there were no inns that would let me stay with him, so I couldn't stay at Ginzan Onsen. It's a small, retro hot spring town with a Taisho-era atmosphere. There were so many tourists that it felt like I was walking around the downtown area. (There were a lot of foreign tourists in groups.) I wanted to experience the Taisho-era atmosphere, so it was a bit disappointing. The inn was a really old, quaint building, and I was just impressed by how amazing wooden architecture is. I would be so happy if I could stay in a place like this...
