My group enjoyed a beautiful afternoon at Quarry Bank, located 11 miles from Manchester. I most enjoyed a visit to the Apprentice House, where you hear stories about the children (some as young as age 9) who worked 12-hour days, six days a week. The children were not paid, but received plenty of food, clothing, and some primitive medical care courtesy of Dr. Peter Holland. They sometimes worked overtime, earning a penny per hour so they could buy things in the local village. The gardens, full of colorful rhododendrons and azaleas, were equally delightful. At the cotton mill, you learn about the industrial revolution and founder Samuel Greg. According to our tour guide, Hannah Greg was an even more remarkable person. She would teach the girls how to read and write and give them occasional scriptural lessons.

We arrived and went towards the top cafe so we could use the loo and change baby
My granddaughter remembered before covid they used to have a big connect 4 for them to play in the field when we asked about it the lady was quite rude “we do our best “ but was quick to ask for our tickets I replied I understand about last year but thought this year thought you would have got the games out “ well it’s not up-to me “ she snapped
We decided after changing baby we would go to the bottom cafe as the top one was terribly busy
When we got to the bottom my granddaughter wanted to play on the playground
This was closed last time we came as it was being refurbished due to floods
Well I wouldn’t have bothered there’s nothing for the children the play area is now a seating picnic area with nothing for the older child my 6 year old granddaughter was bored very quickly
We went to the cafe to be told sorry we are closing due to staffing issues go to the top one they are open
I replied yes I know we have been there and couldn’t get seats
No sorry or anything just go to the top one we are closed
What an awful day out

Absolutely wonderful visit to Quarry Bank. Incredible to see the Mill and the Apprentice House. Those children had to work so long and hard. The owner’s house was also a delight, but the Mill itself is just incredible. Such a well preserved piece of our industrial heritage. The guides talked so passionately about whatever they were showing us and they absolutely brought it to life. They are a credit to themselves and the National Trust.
The grounds are stunning, especially around the Mill and House. There are a couple of cafes but if we ever visit again we’d take a picnic and sit and soak up this wonderful, rich atmosphere.
This place has left a lasting memory and we’d love to visit again.

Quite a difficult place to get to as you need to negotiate around Manchester airport but once there feels like you are in the middle of countryside. Timed tickets needed for the Apprentice House and Workers Cottage. Both guides were very knowledgeable. Sara in the Apprentice House really brought everything to life. The mill itself is quite large and it takes quite a lot of time to give it justice. Jane was excellent and showed us how the machines worked. The gardens are worth a visit although we did not have much time as everything else had taken us quite a time. Very tired by the end of the day but well worth a visit.

I do not think I will bother to renew my National Trust membership. It is now apparent that all the food at all National Trust Properties comes from the same very mediocre supplier. Having visited Bodnant Gardens last year the poor food selection was blamed on the Covid crisis. I accepted that then but having visited the Weaving Shed Restaurant at Quarry Bank Mill today it is clear that the National Trust is now using one supplier for all of it's properties and it is no longer possible to get a decent meal.
Part of the attraction of the National Trust in the past was the ability to visit somewhere of outstanding natural beauty or of significant interest and make a day out of it by having a decent lunch.
This is no longer possible - today we ordered a sausage roll, a baked potato with 3 bean chilli, a spiced cauliflower pasty and some cheese and chive potato wedges.
All I can say is that I will NEVER eat in a National Trust restaurant again. 3 hours later and I can still taste the utterly vile chili and the memories of the reheated nasty baked potato will live long!! The cheese and chive potato wedges came out ages after everything else and looked like they had been left in a blast furnace for too long!! The sausage roll and the cauliflower pasty were bog standard. We also ordered one small can of fizzy water - OUR BILL - £19.60.
If the food had been nice I would have accepted the high price but for this garbage - what can I say - RIP OFF!!
The gardens and the house are lovely but avoid the eateries!!

A lovely walk around the National Trust park with lots of off lead walking for the pup. With ‘water activities’ expect a tired (and muddy) pup after your visit

Julia was very friendly and helpful at the entrance she could not be anymore helpful if she tried she was very understanding and polite she explained where everything was. The mill was brilliant all the staff was friendly and again very helpful with their stories / facts. I did not realise how massive and beautiful this place is I did not have enough time to view everywhere so I will definitely be back to explore. Also the ice cream was lovely it was a nice treat to have whilst walking back up the hill to leave.

This place is a joy so much history and you can just take a walk around some of the estate without charge
But if you want too see more you will have to pay or show your membership cards
There are gardens to visit on the top and bottom and are well kept and maintained
The apprentice house were the children were kept in is worth a look a bit of a shock compared to todays standard
Also the mill runs some displays there seemed to be some school children learning some history
A look back in how hard times used to be

Visited here yesterday. Disappointed to find we couldn’t go into the apprentice house as all the tours were booked. Mill owners house interesting but only 3 rooms?? Why no upstairs or kitchen.
The mill itself was very interesting, unfortunately people with unruly and undisciplined children spoilt it. Shouting over the staff who were trying to explain where to go/ what to see etc.
far too many dogs, don’t know why people insist on taking their dogs everywhere they go
Hopefully will return when children are back at school!!

Incredible day out to quarry bank mill today. Whole family enjoyed it and restaurant was great for lunch too. Volunteers were great with our daughter and very informative. We saw the looms working and steam engines and water wheel operating.

I’ve booked a visit slot for today - does anyone know if you can arrive in advance of the time slot to eat a picnic by the car?

Sorry cannot say for sure. We arrived early at another NT venue and were allowed to park up.
I think you will just have to chance it and hope for the best.
Is any suitable Shady parking available to leave a dog in car while visiting the Mill?

Hi
I’m planning to Visit tomorrow, atuesday 4 September. It’ll take me about three hours to get there.
Listening to the website today the message says that the mill is currently closed for refurbishment. I have emailed them ( no reply) and telephoned but no human to speak to, just recorded message as above.
I’m assuming it’s open now as reviews have been left but I’d be really grateful for confirmation as it’s a long way to travel to a shut door!
Many thanks

Was open last Thursday. Speaking to lady in “used book shop” it opened after a re-furb ( new lift) and display update, start of last week.
