We went at the perfect time of year (5th Dec) - very few tourists around so we could enjoy the stunning views serenely. We drove to Glenfinnan at midday and there was plenty of parking. A kind couple driving out gave us their parking ticket saving us £3.50 straight away.

We firstly walked to the Glenfinnan Monument and enjoyed the most amazing views out onto the Loch with absolutely no one else around. After soaking that up and taking lots of wonderful pictures we walked to the viewpoint which was a short climb from the visitor centre. Another way to see such beautiful scenery.

We then took the walk towards the Glenfinnan Viaduct where we got close up, walked through the Viaduct and took the climb up the mountain route towards the train station. It was the perfect sunny day to soak up the most beautiful views with lots of different angles to capture views of the mountains, the viaduct, monument and Loch. There was a slight chill in the air but it just added to the authenticity of the whole experience.

On the mountain trail we came across a kind man with his dog who was chainsawing trees. It turns out he lives in the little cottage on the grounds and had been the land keeper there for over 40 years.

We then made it to the station and before taking a walk into the local village where we could take on different views from the "Hogwarts" side of the Loch. We then made the walk back towards the monument where we could start to enjoy views of the sunsetting over the Loch.

Just absolutely amazing! I believe it's well worth taking the walk around the area rather than taking the train if you have a choice. We loved it and will cherish the memories forever!

There are two other hiking trails close to the Monument which we get to take but would probably be worth taking if you had an extra hour or two spare to take.

Only 1/2 hr from Fort William. Viaduct and train used in film (Hogwarts Express) Need to check train times as steam train only goes over at 4 set times. Need to get there in plenty of time as car park gets busy and you need to walk under viaduct from car park and up slope for place to take picture/video (not too far or difficult) Plenty of people there all doing the same thing. Nice cafe/gift shop in car park and loch opposite for more great pictures.

This is a nice short walk for the reasonably fit but can take a bit longer than you think. You need to allow extra time to stop to allow people to pass in a COVID-secure way on the narrow path.

The path from the Station museum is the longer route by some way. It passes through a woodland and has boardwalk sections with some uneven steps. Once under the track and into open country there are sections of climb - nothing too arduous although if you have mobility difficulties (knee, hip etc) it may be worth seing if the shorter route from Glennfinnan monument carpark would be better for you. Once the main climb is done it is relatively level to the viewpoint, but there are stone 'steps' to negotiate so need to watch where you are going!

There are nice long distance views en route and also the occasional orchid. It is a good way to introduce hill-walking to children by motivating them with the view of the viaduct!

Make sure to time yourself with the steam trains crossing the viaduct, which can be early!

Rhododendron, whilst pretty when it flowers in June, is invading and will change this area in time.

I was glad I had taken a midge headnet!

The car park at Glenfinnan is very busy - but they are building another at the side. It gets packed before the steam train the jacobite passes over the viaduct at around 10.45 in the morning and at 15.15 in the afternoon. there are viewing points high above the viaduct for good photos.

If you want the steam train at the front of the carriages then do the morning photo shoot, as the afternoon photo will see the train going backwards pulling the carriages.

It got busy even in October. Another good photo location is at the bridge to Inverlochy. You see the train head on and get the steam as it passes under the bridge. Not a busy location either.

The walk was great exercise and a little challenging for an aging person! However, it was worth every step. The views of Loch Shiel and the monument are incredible and the viaduct is breathtaking.

We parked at the National Trust carpark (lucky enough to find a space however a new carpark is in progress of being built) and walked up the private road to the trail which starts just before the viaduct. Informative signs on route and we were lucky enough to see the 3.15pm train come along which just topped off the visit. Fantastic walk even without the train passing however can get busy when train is due.

A lovely place to see a wonderful viaduct. There is a viewpoint path and one just outside that goes up and close. It’s glorious in person, definitely brings a sense of nostalgia.

We went for the up and close route which was a nice walk down a path near the visitor centre/cafe. The viewpoint for us seemed a little far away and only beneficial if you have a professional camera.

We didn't do the full trail due to the weather, but the section that we did was beautiful. The scenery was stunning, and it was a lovely last stop to our day.

Loved the trail! Red deer and a golden eagle soaring above. You need comfy shoes as its slippy in the winter. Lovely walk
