... denn dieses im 4.Jh. von Apa Pschoi gegründete Objekt ist eines der ältesten Werke christlicher Baukunst überhaupt.
Insbesondere bedeutungsvoll ist, dass hier noch weite Teile des damals errichteten Gebäudes erhalten sind und dass erst vor wenigen Jahren entdeckt wurde, dass hier noch Fresken aus dem 6.Jahrhundert vorhanden sind. Letztere waren unter einer Staubschicht verborgen gewesen und konnten aber inzwischen durch Restaurationsarbeiten freigelegt werden. Heute erstrahlen diese Malereien wieder in ihrer ursprünglichen Pracht, dass man das Rote Kloster auf eine Stufe mit der Hagia Sophia stellt.
Bei unserem Besuch waren wir beide die einzigen Anwesenden. Eine unbeschreibliche Atmosphäre und Stille umfing uns.
Niemals hätten wir ein solches Erlebnis in einer Reisegruppe gehabt.

The plain exterior of this ancient monastery is in sharp contrast to the splendor of the artwork inside: the interior doorway is ornately carved, and the frescoes around the main altar are simply breathtaking. All artwork has been carefully restored, is well lit and accessible.

The decorations in this monastery are outstanding and the monks are very welcoming and eager to explain details.

A completely restored chapel of 4th-5th century frescoes. Lavishly decorated with unique icons; most notably the Virgin Mary breastfeeding. Highly unusual and special.

Già è lungo il tour da Luxor a Dendera e Abydos ma, fatto trenta, si può far trentuno e aggiungere un altro paio d’ore per arrivare oltre Sohag al monastero dei santi Bishoy e Bigol detto monastero rosso perché costruito in mattoni cotti. La cappella dei santi è un’eccezionale testimonianza dell’arte cristiana nel periodo tardo-antico risalendo al quarto secolo. Una sfacchinata ripagata da uno spettacolo eccezionale dato anche il fresco restauro. A pochi chilometri c’è anche il monastero bianco di S. Shenouda l’Archimandrita. Ne è valsa la pena.

This is a short trip from Sohag but if you are AMerican the police will accompany you along the way to almost every where in Egypt. Ask to see the Priest who has the keys to open the chapel with the amazing images.

I think " so beautiful" would be the first words everyone who visits this monastery would say, as you would be surrounded with vivid colours from everywhere, rich history and a clear feeling of spirituality, this monastery should be added to everyone's itinerary when visiting Sohag.

Since the wonderful restoration/cleaning, the paintings in the Red Monastery rank first in Coptic Art. They are stupefying in technicolor. We took a cab from Luxor (2.5 hrs.) and also stopped to see the nearby White Monastery and Temple of Seti at Abydos. It was a magical long day. Well worth the effort.
