Really interesting visit. It was cloudy so couldn't see much in the sky. Nevertheless it was fascinating to see the telescope and the roll back of the roof. Jimmy told us lots of information about stars and solar system . We got to hold a bit of meteorite which was amazing. And a lovely cat was doing its rounds which enhanced the experience. Would definitely go again.

Was there last night 20/07/2023 although it was a cloudy night, this did nothing to dampen the experience. Our astronomer for the night was Jimmy and he really new his stuff, to be fair he made the experience with his knowledge, enthusiasm and the way he delivered the information. As I said it was a cloudy night, but we still managed to see quite a lot when there was a break in the cloud, even got to see the space station when it passed over. I have a small interest in this it has now grown immensely, but the best thing about it was how my wife really took to it and really enjoyed the whole experience, the knowledge we came away with has really inspired us and I am about to brush off the dust and set up my telescope . All I can say it is a great experience one of the best 2.5 hrs you can spend , so if your thinking about I would say do it its a fun way to learn and it really gets you thinking. So once again a big thank you to Jimmy for the experience. Will definitely go again and take my granddaughter who has a keen interest.

Based on my experience, i have really enjoyed it. The staff where very helpful and kind. Plus there was free coffee. Definitely coming back soon.

We signed up last minute for the Dark Sky Observatory thinking that the tickets were a little pricey. However barely 10 minutes into the session, it was clear that Roy, our astronomer leading the session, was excellent value for money. Usually we would have been frustrated with a cloudy night during a session where you want to see the night sky but we dipped outside when clear patches arrived and continued inside when they left us. Roy delved into lots of information and we journeyed along many tangents, all of which were thoroughly entertaining. The leaflet of recommendations provided for various astronomy websites and apps is helpful and impressive, plus Roy's own enthusiasm is infectious. Despite a cloudy night, we both came away buzzing for more. He was also incredibly gracious when I accidentally dropped moon rock on the floor (apologies again.) We're excited to return at a better time of year and hope for a clearer night to see more!

Very informative evening with Roy, who is passionate and knowledgeable.
The evening is weather dependent and the clouds can obscure the views however this evening the sky was clear and we had a fantastic view of Venus and a nebular constellation-but don’t quote me on that!!
A great hands on experience using the telescope and binoculars and looking at meteor rocks.
Throughly enjoyed ourselves.

Great experience listening to 2 passionate experts! Jimmy and harry were a great double act and made the complex pretty simple for a us who knew nothing about astronomy. We got to have a look using a huge telescope which was great but such a shame we had so much cloud cover which did limit what yiu could see

Great night here with Chris Duffy as our host. Even though the weather was teasing us bouncing between cloudy and clear we had a great night learning about the universe
For stargazing naive people like me, even the moments with the binoculars looking at the Pleaides cluster or twinkling Sirius will be breathtaking
Getting out on to the decks and orientating yourself based on Polaris and how the sun/moon/constellations moves through the sky gives you a taste of how many would have lived and been at one with nature pre GPS and smart devices
We were fuelled by the free tea/coffee /soups well into the night and enjoyed every moment.

We visited the observatory on Friday 24th for Aurora Hunting. We were welcomed by Martin the astronomer for the evening who was very welcoming and knowledgeable and good craic. We were shown the moon through the new telescope and the clarity was mind blowing. We also got a tour of the night sky including constellations and planets. Luckily the cloud cover to see the stars was few and far between. The 7 sisters were dazzling. We didn’t see any aurora in real life (it’s nature -so unpredictable) but were given a thorough presentation on how to predict when it will fall. I’ve already ordered some kit! An out of this world experience!!!

Great 2 hours informative entertainment on a very cloudy Northumberland Night. The Astro Guys kept us interested, informed and entertained even with not much to see. Recommend a visit.

You won't have a problem but let them know you'll be late. However if you are coming to one of the very specialist sessions - say on astrophotography - and are a complete newbie, I wouldn't recommend coming late. But for a more general session - you'll not miss out too much. The general session I went to started off with a talk and the hands-on was much later

We live in Manchester and are coming for a short visit to Northumberland, My son wants to be an astrophysicists and would love to take him to an observatory. What if we have booked tickets and it is a cold rainy day ?

unfortunately you take that chance although the area and building is small there is something of interest and very knowledgeable and friendly staff available, the night we, as a group, visited, our coach was due to leave at 11:30pm and up to 10pm there was a very low cloudbase, at 10pm the sky suddenly became very clear, why not stay at the Battlesteads hotel, and stay a couple of days, not only can you stay in the hotel but they have lodgers out the back near the observatory, and no I do not work for them so cannot comment on the accommodation. I hope, during your visit, you will have a clear night and an enjoyable visit and hope I have been some help.
