It was impressive mainly as an existence proof of how many humans per hour a rational tourist industry can cycle through a natural attraction without fatalities. Plus, there is a cultural thing: people plump down in the middle of the stairs (everything is stairs) and won't move, gridlocking the whole business. So anticipate molasses-slow waddling up and down stairs in swarming crowds and stifling heat with people sitting in the middle of the stairs the whole time. "Beam me up Scotty!"

Huashan is now open to foreigners. The park hotline suggested we enter with recent COVID tests, but no one asked to see them when we arrived. You’ll need to buy entrance tickets (and cable car tickets if that’s your plan) directly from ticket offices as wechat miniprograms and ctrip will only accept a Chinese ID.
Staying on the mountain will be tricky if you don’t speak Chinese, as noone working in the hotels speaks English (as far as I know). Lodging on top of the mountain is not accepting reservations on English sites as far as I can tell, and ctrip also requires a Chinese id holder to book a room. We got around this by writing fake Chinese names on our ctrip booking (it didn’t actually require us to list an ID number) and calling the hotel to confirm that they would still accept us if our names didn’t match the booking info. It may also be possible to book by phone, but the hotel was resistant to do this for us for some reason.
In the end, every park employee that we interacted with was unbothered by the fact that we were foreigners and was very easygoing/helpful. Some local tourists were a bit rude, but any foreigner going to huashan these days is likely used the the occasional staring, pointing, or less than stealthy photo taking that comes with living here as an expat.
On another note, the plank walk has undergone some safety/logistical changes (people are sent out in groups, no more two way traffic, no more unhooking of carabiners during the walk) however these changes have lead to what I assume are much longer wait times, even if you get there relatively early.

Local government and people are still racist to foreigners. When I arrived at the train station it was the first time in years that the taxi driver tried to rip me off and not use the meter to get to my hotel. Dinner that evening was overpriced by about 20% and I was told that foreigners are not allowed up the mountain. The excuse given was that we do not have second generation ID cards. This is false, because if you go to the gate ticket office you can see Chinese people buying tickets without an ID card and they can climb up the mountain. I even when to the ticket management of HuaShan ticket office and spoke with the officials there and they informed me that it wasn't racist that foreigners can't climb but they can't justify it. All in all I have to say it was the worst place I've been in China.

Foreigners without Chinese ID card can still not enter the mountain. Staff are incredibly rude at the entrance.

Despite checking in advance with local tour guides and the hotel, the Huashan Mountain are is still closed for foreigners... really sad to see Chinese tourist attractions develop in such a poor direction.

This place is a real disgrace. I booked plane tickets, I rented a car, I paid the highway toll to start the climb around 11pm. And I have had my access refused because I am a foreigner.
I have not leave China for the last 6 months, I have a green Shaanxi QR code, I have my passport with me with my working visa and my last entry stamp and I was wearing a mask. The people I tried to negotiate with where stubborn and unyielding, only people with a Chinese ID card can enter.
After 2 hours of negotiation, I have to drove back to my hotel in Xi'an in the middle of the night.
I feel tired, sad and highly frustrated, it seems that no matter the effort you do to be accepted in China, you will always suffer from ridiculous discrimination.

Like a previous traveller, also told in my hotel its currently closed to foreigners.... i guess because of Covid, although all the other attractions are open... my guess is this site has become hugely overcrowded (like a lot of the easily accessible places in China) and they have congestion points like the cable car queues that apparently can last 1 - 2 hours.... not sure what the solution is. Personally disappointed still as all ive seen living in china for 3 years is concrete..... maybe in the autumn....

I went to Huashan mountain today and was not allowed to enter. I spoke to three different people and they all told me that foreigners are not allowed entry. The day before I saw the Terra-Cotta army without any issues.

What is the most recommended route for people going to Mount Huashan. I want to ensure I have enough time to do the plank walk. Does anyone have a suggested route they would recommend? :) Thanks

Did not do the plank walk as I was told that the queue for the plank walk can take 2-3 hours.
Se puede subir estando embarazada? recorrer alguna zona "más segura"?

Depends how pregnant you are. You can certainly take the cable car ride, but if you're more than 6 months, you will find all the stairs to get to the cable car, and the steep climbs on the mountain, very uncomfortable. I don't think it's unsafe as in potentially falling off the mountain, but it's very hard work.

Is there any camping elsewhere in the park? Any cool canyons to hike at the bottom or camping areas on the ground? Curious about the backpacking potential in other parts of the park. Definitely want to camp up top but interested in staying longer.

To my knowledge there are no campsites anywhere on Huashan. The Chinese are not really into camping. I think part of the reason is that their population is so huge that they limit access to their parks to established trails, many of which are stairs, in order to protect the environment. I do believe there are some hostels on the mountain. That being said, I did find a video on UTube in which it looks like someone just pitched a tent on a viewing platform. Whenever I asked about camping during my 3 month tour of China, no one could tell me where you could camp. The problem with camping without permission is that, if it is not allowed, and you are caught, you could wind up hiking down the mountain in the dark. Look at pictures of the mountain, that is not something I would recommend. I personally took the west cable car up, some of the most spectacular mountain views I have ever seen, and then hiked to the 5 peaks. I took the other cable car down. I was able to do this on a day trip from Xi'an. I have to say I haven't been as impressed by a Mountain since I first saw the Grand Tetons back in the sixties. No matter how you do the mountain you will have breathtaking views as long as it isn't totally enveloped by deep fog. I was lucky, the fog rolled in and out allowing me to see it in different ways. Have a great trip and I hope this answer helps.

I will be travelling to Hua Shan mid May. May I know the weather up there? Is it ok if we put on a down jacket and jeans?
Appreciate your reply.

Hi! May is a good season for Mount Hua, a T shirt will be enough for a sunny day, but jacket is necessary if you come across a sudden rain.

We went up and down via cable car, so we have no need for hiking equipments, but in your case, if you need to hike up via the trail, it would be best to be fully equips with the necessary hiking equipments. safe travel.

Can i build a tent when i hiking on the mountain?

No need to camp on the mountain, you can do the mountain easily in one day - all 5 peaks. Wuyun Peak is a guest house near the North Peak, as well as North Peak Hotel. I did not see any place to pitch a tent and this kind of information is difficult to find in China. My map also tells me there is a guest house near West Peak (it looked like it was being renovated when I was there), also Zhen Yue Gong Hotel and East Peak Hotel. None of them are fancy and probably cost a lot. I would suggest staying at the bottom and spend the day at the top, unless you are trying to see the sunset/sunrise
is 1 day hiking on Hua shan sufficient of should we spend there 2 days?

Hi,
Can you hike Mt Huashan and skip the plank walk?
We would like to go and hike there but we would prefer to avoid that plank part. When you are on the Mt Huashan, are there other paths to go around that part? So, can you still reach some peaks, etc. or do you absolutely have to go through that plank?
