Friday 22nd March we were walking in the direction of Margao Municipal Gardens. Just before we crossed the road we walked through a small garden area where this bust statue stands in front of the Administrative Building of Salcete Communidade.
It pays hommage to Francisco Luís Gomes who was born in Goa on 31st May 1829 and died on the 30th September 1869 aged 40.
During his short life he achieved so much, he was a writer, historian, physician, economist and political scientist.
He also served as a member of the Portuguese Parliament for the constituency of Margao from 1851 to 1869.
In 1869 he was struck down by illness,he wished to return to Goa for his final days. While travelling home on board the S.S. Messalia, he died as the ship entered the Atlantic Ocean.
It would appear that today's Margaons have forgotten their famous son. The gardens in which the statue stands are rundown, neglected a lot of weeds and some of the bushes a long time dead. The building it stands in front of is crumbling, paint peeling away and covered in black mildew, overall not a pretty picture.
The bust and the plinth on which it stands, with inscriptions on three of it's sides, looks in need of serious cleaning.
We would not have known about or seen the statue had we not been walking by and stopped fora few moments to have a look.
