After a long drive from Murchison Falls, we arrived at Tembo Lodge, near the bridge at Kazinga Channel. It was late in the afternoon. The following morning, we wanted to do something light prior to entering QNEP at 2PM. My daughter and her friend wished to see flamingoes. So we decided to go to Katwe Salt mines and Lake Munyanyange. The drive from Kazinga Channel bridge was approximately 45 minutes and on the way we saw elephants, buffalos, knobs, etc. The road is outside the boundary of QNEP so park fees are not required. Hover-ever, there is an entrance fee of $10 per person to be paid at a office before the gate. Make sure you get the receipt because it is required at the gate. We had a local guide who joined us and explained the salt mines and history. It is ok, nothing fantastic. Afterwards we drove to the adjacent lake and saw lots of flamingoes and other birds. It was a worthwhile site and a break from game drives. The total time is 3-4 hours from Kazinga Channel Bridge, next to Tembo Safari Lodge. The $10 entrance fee helps the community. I recommend you visit if time permits.

Lake Katwe is known throughout Uganda and the East African region for its substantial salt production and has been producing high quality salt for many years.

Geographically, Lake Katwe is found within an explosion crater in the formerly active volcanic area north-east of Lake Edward and south-east of Lake George.

The lake is found in the small run-down town of Katwe on the outskirts of the Queen Elizabeth National Park in the Kasese district and covers an area of approximately eight square miles.

Its shores are lined with small ponds  or pans of water from which salt is extracted from the bottom in a process called salt panning.

Salt content of the lake waters is approximately 13.5 %.

The lake bed is 0.8 meters thick and contains approximately over 12 million tonnes of salt, varying in composition and depth and has salt stocks, which are estimated to sustain an industrial extraction plant with a production rate of 7 tonnes of salt per hour for 34 years.

On this basis, an industry to mechanize the salt production process was put in place in the 1970s by Uganda’s former  president, the late Field Marshal Idi Amin Dada to extract and recover salts from the Lake Katwe brine deposits.

However, for a number of reasons, the project never took off to date and the Katwe salt project is now on the brink of privatization, according to Global Nature Fund - a non-profit, private, independent international foundation for the protection of the environment and nature.

The Lake Katwe region is full of fascinating history and interesting things to do. If you would like to learn more about the area, *Lake Munyanyange Caves Lodge* would be glad to host you and take you around.

A payment is required to visit, but locals will explain for a small fee the production method. Be aware of drunks pretending to be car park attendants! Only make payment to the Katwe Tourist Centre, never to those roaming the Lake area.

The process is best seen during the HOT seasons, to see the salt being extracted, but even "off" times give an indication of how the salt is extracted

The lake close by also has flamingos
