We hired a guide to take us birdwatching and we walked to this waterfall. Gorgeous walk and very easy.

We came here by chance on the wway somewhere else. This was deffinatly a lesser known travel spot as almost no-one was here. We got in and swam for a little bit of time.
It is agreat spot but there is no food in a while so bring food, a swimming costume and a towel!

Beautiful introduction to Costa Rica, it’s beauty, waterfalls, and flowers were gorgeous. We did not like the animals being in cages. It would have been a lot more fun to see birds and monkeys in the wild as opposed to in cages. The frogs, butterflies, and other attractions were very interesting.

My husband and I walked the whole park and saved the waterfall for the end as recommended. It's a good little jaunt. Wear sturdy shoes.

The trails aren't very difficult to navigate in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The paths are well-maintained and easy to follow. Our guide gave us the choice of resting, or going another half mile to the falls. The falls were lovely, though, we saw them in the dry season. They must be more exciting when the rains come.
The multiple cascades fall into a pool below, and spill out into a small river that runs through the preserve. Very nice little excursion. Enjoy!

I would suggest going as soon as you enter park while you are rest ...... well worth the short hike on very stable ground.

Beautiful waterfall right in the middle of the forest trail. Stop and chill out here for a bit before continuing on.

Terraced cataract in the preserve. Walking paths are generally well maintained in the immediate area so an easy walk (reserve still recovering in some areas from Hurricane Nate's rainfall). Well worth the modest additional exertion

Is this waterfall still closed? We've been told it is permanently closed because of a fatal accident in 2013. However, we are seeing it advertised on websites and there are even recent TripAdvisor reviews.
I am finding mixed info on the location of the San Luis Waterfalls. In Google Maps it is showing it near Domincal and other searches it is showing up in Montverde Cloud Forest, where is it actually? We will be traveling here in a couple weeks with a group ranging from 2 years of age to 65. Would this hike be too much for little kids?

Good hike for everyone .... hike is on the left just inside the park ..... big sign.
You do not need hiking shoes like do many of the other park hikes in CR

Which is the best way to access the trail and waterfall for a short (2-3 hour) hike? I've read variously that one can hike 3 hours one-way from the Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, or 45 minutes from the U. of Georgia campus, or from a private family farm up a canyon from below. We're thinking about including the fall on our visit to the area in a few weeks, and the timing of a 45 minute-1 hour hike each way from the U. of Georgia campus sounds good. Any suggestions?

Sorry, the waterfall is closed because it is dangerous. Two people have died already don't push it!

The Place has been closed due to previous tragic accidents. You may see the waterfall from two different places in Monteverde, on the main steep road to San Luis that is a bit risky and from the Observation Deck at Ficus Trails.
The San Luis waterfall belongs to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve and you can't access the waterfall from the preserve so a family who owns land on the bottom part of the fall has charged visitors for many years so people would walk on a trail that goes mainly on the river bed and that's why it is dangerous. San Luis is located at 700 meters above see level and the preserve at 1500 at the entrance so it is a big drop and you kind of have to walk through a canyon and there's no place to run if there's rock slides and San Luis is on top of a fault line as well that comes from the Preserve.
So, enjoy it from the distance, better safe than sorry. Besides, the Observation Deck at Ficus Trails has an overwhelming view from the top of the Continental Divide all the way down to San Luis and the Ocean and the islands from the Pacific coast.
