A definite "must do" when going to Haiti is to visit Croix Des Bouquets, Not far from Port-au-Prince, the village is an artistic mecca for anyone into crafting. Even if that isn't your interest, you'll be amazed with how they turn a metal barrel into works of art. Cutting and flattening the scrap metal, they sand and smooth the pieces before stenciling patterns and cutting out intricate designs. The most popular and intriguing are the trees of life. One can imagine taking small scissors to paper, known as scherenschnitte, and coming up with such a delicate picture of silhouettes, scenery or snowflakes, but this is metal !
The artists always invite you into their workshop, which doubles as a gallery. Yes, they are anxious to sell their crafts, and bargaining is the name of the game, so play along. We bought an incredible 16 x 16 inch tree of life for $20. Knowing the average wage in this, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, is only two dollars a day, we asked if the artist would let us take a picture of him beside his work, then paid him a little more. Even without buying their work, they enjoy showing you their art, and it's fun to compare styles and talents.
For those with more eccentric tastes, there are artists who create sculptures out of "junk." How about an angel whose wings are made from half the casing of a rotary fan. Then there was the full size person riding an actual bicycle, all made out of metal.
While walking through the village, you hear the sound of chisels and tools striking metal, as the next piece of artwork is being created. It's amazing.
Everyone deals in American dollars, but make sure you bring smaller denominations. They don't have a lot of customers, and can't make change for large bills.

The village is a little far from Pétionville (over an hour driving), but is well worth the visit! There are some truly special pieces to be found. One shop along the end of the road on the right has magnificent large masks and a very distinct and unique style. The vendors really want you to visit all of their shops (which will take a lot of time), but they not aggressive about it and are pleasant about negotiating prices. Highly recommended if you are into sculpture, arts and handicrafts.

Noailles is very unique. A real arts and craft community with many one of a kind metal art pieces. Lots of little things; but ranges up to more substantial pieces like coffee tables, privacy screens and other larger pieces of metal art. You will need at least an hour to walk through the maze of shops and figure out what it is you would like to buy. A great place to go before your head home and buy souvenirs and gifts.

Count me among those who consider this a “must see” place in Haiti. Yes, every vendor will want to show you their wares, but it’s worth seeing. I had custom names done by one of the artists, and I couldn’t be happier. I’d be there weekly if we lived closer!

My wife and I, along with a friend and the Canadian Ambassador visited the village on a Sunday morning around 10 am.
It is very safe to walk around. Be sure to take the time to walk in and visit with the artisans. Most speak english, or will get someone over who does. Although there is some overlap, different shops have different materials or themes.
Everything is handmade with incredible attention to detail. You can bargain on price, but be reasonable where you start as they have put a lot of work into their art. There is a master working out of a house on the periphery and there is no negotiating there as the quality is superb.
You can always come back a second time once you have made a full round of the shops and decide which ones you want to visit a second time. We also enjoyed a cold beer half way though to take a break from shopping. :)

The artwork here is amazing! Much of it is made from steel barrels. Each artist does a variety of designs that are super creative. We met a couple of men whose work had been featured in publications, including one who has a piece in the national museum. Prices are reasonable. A worthwhile visit!

This is a whole area of metalworkers making various kinds of art. Much of it is repetitive, but if you look, you can find several workers with unique styles. Prices are reasonable and haggling is sometimes accepted.
