"Academy (書院)" is a private educational institution in the ancient China. (But in rural area, many of the academies were supported by, or even run by the government.) During the Qing dynasty, there were a total of 62 academies in Taiwan. The Dengying Academy is one of the largest and well preserved among them.
Established in 1848, the building was rebuilt in 1926. In Japanese occupation era, the modern education system was established, then the Dengying academy was transformed into a shrine to worship Emperor Wenchang. Emperor Wenchang (文昌帝君) is a is a Taoist deity - the God of Culture and Literature. He is worshiped by scholars and students who need bless and help right before an examination.
The building is a standard three-sided courtyard, with the main hall in the middle. Many cultural relics such as plaques and statues are preserved inside. Dengying academy is now a County-designated monuments.
We bumped into Mr. Hung, the Chairman of the Regulatory Commission. Mr. Hung is a nice and knowledgeable person. He was smiling and chatting with visitors, explaining the beauty of the heritage to us.

看得出來廟方有在整理，是個歷史悠久的文昌廟，佔地不大，但有公共廁所還蠻乾淨的，而且出入的路非常小條，幾乎無法會車，但有個臨時停車場還蠻大的，是個路過可以去走走的地方

維護的還不錯，許多當地學子每逢考試都會來此拜拜，以獲取好考運。記得當年我也是來此拜拜，順利考上大學。佔地不大，卻能保有原歷史風味，早期教育的學堂與現在的教育環境真的差很多。但地標似乎不太好找，位於巷子內，有興趣的人可以順道經過參訪一下。
