If you've made it to the Taroko Gorge, then you would probably have visited the Swallow Grotto. It's the most dramatic, and the most popular, area of the various natural sights in the region. It's also the highlight of the Yanzhikou Trail which runs parallel to the Liwu River. Over many thousands of years, the river carved the high bluff cliffs and the many natural holes in the cliff walls that were used by swallows as the sites of their nests, hence the name of the grotto. The trail also featured the Indian Chief in the Gorge rock formation (which wasn't very obvious but thankfully, there was a sign nearby to point it out) as well as the Jinheng Bridge that was named for a local supervisor who died during the construction of Taiwan's cross-island highway. As with other visitors who were there, we donned hard hats (provided at the start of the trail) to protect against unpredictable rock falls. Part of the old highway is now incorporated into the tourist trail, so some care should be exercised when walking the trail due to adjacent car traffic.

There’re several holes on rocks. They look like swallows can rest inside. Grand view of nature. You are asked to wear helmet.

We organised a guided trip here which is advisable as to see the best parts some walking is involved, some parts require PPE and you get so much more out of it this way. We found ours through Trip.com. Felt we were really luck to see this part of Taiwan, Such a beautiful place.

燕子口指中橫公路距靳珩公園約500公尺的大理尺峽谷峭壁上之無數小岩洞。由峭壁缺口處可見對面石灰質岩壁上，有許多受流水侵蝕後所留下的凹洞，曾有燕子直接築窩其上，形成「百燕鳴谷」的奇景。立霧溪流到這裡由於溪水侵蝕劇烈，使峽谷形成陡直壁立的「Ｕ」字形。開鑿中橫公路時，更特別順著地形鑿了幾個曲折隧道，形成燕子口步道，讓遊客到此可下車步行，俯瞰千岩絕壁下的溪水，以及觀賞對岸燕子群，讚嘆自然與人工的偉大。

燕子口步道原本是開鑿在峭壁上的中橫公路本線，現在公路已經另闢隧道通行，舊有的公路便改為人行步道。燕子口是太魯閣峽谷最險峻陡峭的路段，立霧溪切川大理石岩層，侵蝕出幾近垂直的峭壁。走在燕子口步道上，可以看到整個峽谷猶如一線天，紋理明顯的大理石山壁上有許多溪水侵蝕而成的壺穴；溪谷中還有一處山壁遠遠望去就像一個印第安酋長的側臉，非常有趣。燕子口常有落石，需要戴安全帽以策安全，國家公園內有多處據點可以租借安全帽。

This was our kids' first trip to Taroko National Park, so we had to visit the Swallow Trail. The trail used to be the main road; however, now it's the pathway for tourists. The path is easy to walk and gorgeous. I can only speak for the view today, in the winter time, but slight overcast gave it a Chinese painting feel. We had young kids with us, but I suggest taking your time and enjoy the sight and sounds. Mostly enjoy the sight and quiet.

This trail is included in most tour itineraries for Taroko Gorge. It is easy to walk along the road and you need to wear a helmet. You can see the caves in the cliffs where the swallows nest. Didn't see any swallow though. Very beautiful scenery with the river below, steep cliffs and caves.

The view was MAGNIFICENT! Hiking in Taroko Gorge while listening to the river flowing was such a dream come true. Although we were walking along "almost vertical cliffs", it's quite safe. The road was well paved and handrails were built along the trail. Oh also, it's mandatory to wear helmet!
