In 1990, a wealthy local person donated over 5,000 square feet of land to the temple and a year later the construction started on the temple and was completed in 1998. A year later in 1999 the temple was destroyed by the 1999 earthquake.
This collapsed temple would be considered a really bad omen, but when rescue teams were sent into the ruins of the temple, they found that the statues inside the temple survived the ordeal unscathed and for some reason the beards on the statues grew.
The story of the statues quickly spread around the country and donations started to come in to make a new Wuchang temple. Eighty years after the earthquake and destruction of the Wuchang temple, construction began on the third temple.
Construction of the new temple lasted six years. In 2013 the new Wuchang temple is much bigger and sits across the plaza from the former temple.
The remains of the old Wuchang Temple which collapsed in the 921 earthquake is a 16-minute walk (0.8 mile or 1.2 km) from train station. It is worth seeing.

This Taoist temple, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1999 is both a fascinating and tragic story. A once beautiful building dropped it’s upper storeys to the ground. In the process it crushed the ground level of the building and twisted the other parts in relation to each other. The temple ha been left as a memorial.

.....but this site is very photogenic.Sadly destroyed by an earthquake, the old temple has become the main attraction rather than the new temple. Many in our group didn't visit the new but it's 50 m away and rather pleasant. The little indoor market is worth a brief visit....especially for the oolong tea you can buy and the Buddha's finger fruit.

The new temple is very pretty and ornate. The main attraction, however, are the ruins of the prior temple behind destroyed in 1999. Also a reasonably sized market under a large tent next door with local wares, products and food stuff.

We stopped here on our 5 day visit of the island of Taiwan. During the 1999 earthquake this magnificent temple just collapsed on its base, with the decorations, roofs, etc. poised at unusual and uneven angles. A delight to photograph. The "replacing" temple is just another temple. Nothing as superb as the "earthquake" temple was.

那麼近距離的看這座廟, 彷彿可以親身體會到當時的情況, 很難不感受到那股震撼與恐懼. 這次帶了自己的孩子去, 解釋給他們聽那日發生的事情, 讓他們更了解台灣, 也了解珍惜及把握當下是非常重要的事情. 對了, 一定要去新的武昌宮看長鬍子的神明.

1999年9月21日に発生した大地震（震度7クラス）により武昌宮は半壊しました。現在は新たに建設されています。半壊した建物も当時のままに残されていて、震度7の大きさがどれほどだったかがわかる貴重な跡です。

1999年の台湾大地震(集集大地震)で倒壊した武昌宮を壊さずに保存してあります。
写真では見ていたのですが、やはり目の当たりにすると圧倒されます。倒壊した1階部分の柱の鉄筋がぐにゃりと曲がっていたり梁が折れている様子を見ることが出来、いかに大きな地震であったかがわかります。
「地震被害にあって崩れた建物を残すことで、建物の耐震性の重要性/必要性を後世に伝える事」が倒壊した建物を保存した目的だとの事で、それは十分達成していると
思うのですが、残念なのは案内板の文字(中文)がかすれてしまっていて読めなくなっている事です。 建物をこれ以上倒壊させないための定期的なメンテナンスも重要ですが、「後世に伝える」という目的を達成するためには、案内板もきちんと整備して欲しいと思いました。 できれば日本語の案内板も欲しいですけどね。
なお場所は集集線の集集駅から歩いても15分かからない位です。集集線沿いに遊歩道もあり、暑い時期はきついかもしれませんが、少し涼しくなってきた時期に、のんびりと歩くにはちょうど良い距離でした。 歩くのがつらい場合は、駅前にたくさんあるレンタル自転車/バイクを借りるといいと思います。

This brightly decorated temple was severely damaged by an earthquake late in 1999. Although it collapsed, and the walls and roof remain at uneven angles, it remains standing and provides a great opportunity for photographers to get unusual shots.
The new temple next door is also attractive and worth a visit.
