We will provide information about "Masakadozuka" in Otemachi, Chiyoda Ward. We visited "Masakadozuka" on August 3, 2023. To access "Masakadozuka", exit C5 at Otemachi Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, Tozai Line, Marunouchi Line, Hanzomon Line, or Toei Mita Line, and walk left until you see "Masakadozuka" 30 meters ahead on your left.
"Taira no Masakado" was one of the powerful clans that held hegemony in the Kanto region during the mid-Heian period (first half of the 10th century). "Masakadozuka" is a stone monument erected to commemorate the head of "Taira no Masakado". "Taira no Masakado" started the "Taira no Masakado Rebellion", which attacked the provincial capitals of eight provinces in the Kanto region and expelled the provincial governors. After the "Taira no Masakado Rebellion", "Taira no Masakado" began to call himself "Shinko", which means "new emperor". Taira no Masakado, who was deemed a rebel against the Imperial Court, fought against Taira no Sadamori's army and was killed in battle in Shimousa. His head was displayed by Fujiwara no Hidesato at Shichijo-gawara in Heian-kyo. Even after several months had passed, the head continued to open and close its eyes, sometimes crying out "I want to tie up your head and fight again," frightening the people. Legend has it that the head then flew towards his hometown in the eastern provinces due to a grudge, and fell somewhere along the way. 2021年4月26日行われた 第6次整備工事完了の式典後 初めて参詣しました［前回 第5次整備工事 昭和51年（1976）]。 2020年11月からｽﾀｰﾄした改修工事以前とは 雰囲気的に異なりますが こちらは《三大怨霊（他の2霊 菅原道真と崇徳天皇）》の霊碑であり 元々 首が京都から関東に戻ってきた話から 《必ず帰る》と縁起が生まれ 左遷や出張から帰る 行方不明者が帰るなどを祈念する参詣者は多いようです。《将門の首塚》の左右の2匹の《ｶｴﾙ》が迎えてくれている点 日本中でこちらだけではないでしょうか。

東京都指定の旧跡の一つですが、畏怖の対象としてのパワースポット、という印象が強いスポットです。
承平天慶の乱により討ち取られ、京都に晒された平将門の首が、光を放って東方に飛び去り、この地に落ちたという伝承があります。村人によって埋葬されたものの強い怨念から祟りが相次いだことから、神田明神の祭神として祀る等供養を施したところ、怨念も鎮まり、その後はこの地の守護神になった、と伝わります。1000年以上も前の伝承であるため、単なる伝承に過ぎなかったはずが、関東大震災や第二次世界大戦後の都市復興の区画整理の際、不用意にこの塚の取り壊しや移設をしようとしたため、不審の事故や死傷者が相次いだことから、単なる伝承では済まされなくなり、整備を繰り返しながら今日まで保存されるに至ります。
近隣企業が参加した保存会によって維持管理されるため、敷地内は勿論周辺も一切のゴミの散乱も無く美しく保たれています。塚以外何もなく、また供養塔への賽銭や供え物は禁止となっています。ただ静かに心穏やかにお参りするといいでしょう。

According to mere folklore, the head of Taira no Masakado, who was defeated in the Johei-Tengyo Rebellion and exposed in Kyoto, flew away to the east and fell here. The villagers buried the head, but it was cursed by a strong grudge, so he was enshrined as a deity of Kanda Myojin and other offerings were made, the grudge was quelled, and he became the guardian deity of the area.
You would think that this is mere folklore, since it's more than 1,000 years old. But what would you think if, just 100 years ago, during the Great Kanto Earthquake or during the rezoning of the city for urban reconstruction after World War II, an attempt was made to inadvertently tear down or relocate this mound, resulting in a series of suspicious accidents, casualties, and injuries? This could no longer be mere folklore, and it has been preserved to this day through repeated maintenance.
The mound is maintained and managed by a preservation society with the participation of neighboring businesses, so the site and surrounding area are kept beautiful and free of any litter. There is nothing to see but the mound, and offering money or offerings to the memorial tower is prohibited. It is best to simply visit the mound quietly and peacefully.

三井物産本社ビル、地下鉄大手町駅C5出口のすぐそばです。平将門は、武家社会が成立することを初めて示した武将と言われてます。

こちらは、三井物産本社ビルのほぼ前にあります。
平安時代中期の豪族、平将門の首を供養するために建てられた石碑だそうです。
きれいに管理されていました。

三井物産の本社の近くに平将門の首塚があるとは知っていたが、道路の交通標識で見つけた。都会のど真ん中で、洗練された周辺と歴史を感じる厳かな雰囲気が共存した空間であった。

平将門の首塚は三井物産の本社ビル改築工事に伴い移転中です。小さな仮設の祠ができており、そこからお詣りできます。しかし、以前の立派な敷地内の大きな墓石に比べれば小さくて寂しいです。

お客さんへ訪問後久々にお参りに来ました。元々あった将門塚は工事フェンスに覆われてました。三井物件に本社ビルは大手町ONEビルとして新築され、その敷地内か脇の将門塚は改修整備中でした。とりあえずお賽銭入れてお参りは出来ます。来年春先には正式なお参り出来るかと。

将門の首塚で国家の安寧を祈りました。平将門は本来なら東京の守り神のはずです。
京都の鬼門には、延暦寺と永平寺があり皇統のあった京都を守っています。江戸は侍大将となった家康が、江戸城の鬼門に神田明神を移築してご祭神に武士の祖である平将門を祀り守り神にしました。家康の死後、江戸の北に東照宮を建て自ら江戸の守り神になりました。江戸の鬼門を守る平将門は桓武天皇の子孫、北を守る家康は清和天皇の末裔で共に皇統の血族です。
明治の世になり平将門は皇統の逆賊だったとして長い間神田明神のご祭神から外されていました。風水や鬼門など古い迷信と明治政府は考えたのでしょう。
しかし、東京の鬼門 ( 北東 ) にはアメリカと福島原発があります。 アメリカに宣戦布告して戦い敗れ明治の富国強兵の社会は終わりました。平将門の子孫が移り住み相馬氏と名を代え江戸時代まで領主として暮らしてきた土地に福島原発はあります。そこで事故が起きました。東京の鬼門なんて迷信だと言うには怖い話だと思います。
