In order to restore the Edo period scenery depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e, this was restored in December 2012 after having been lost for a long time due to a typhoon in the early Meiji period.

台東区の「「清水観音堂「月の松」」についての情報を発信していきます。今回、「「清水観音堂「月の松」」を訪れたのは2022年11月1日です。
京都の「清水寺」と比較すると規模は小さく、景観も少々劣りますが「清水観音堂」はまさに上野の「清水寺」と言っても過言ではありません。舞台あり、清水坂ありまるで京都に来ているみたいです。「清水観音堂」の「舞台」から臨める光景もなかなか味があります。「清水観音堂」の舞台に立つと正面に一風変わった松の木があります。なんと「月」のような形をした円形の松の木です。これが「月の松」です。江戸時代の浮世絵師「歌川広重」の「名所江戸百景」の中にある「上野清水堂不忍ノ池」では、「不忍池」と「月の松」を清水観音堂の舞台にいる人々が不忍池を見ている姿が描かれています。その当時はどのような風景が見ることができたのでしょうか。現在は、この窓から眺める「不忍池」とその向こうに見えるビル群がすごく新旧が融合しています。江戸時代と現代が融合した世界を目の前に映し出してくれます。実は、この「月の松」は、明治時代初期に台風に遭い失われてしまいましたが、平成24年(2012年)に復元されました。未来永劫に渡り私たちの目を楽しませてくれるのは間違いありませんね。

The Woodblock Print Artist Hiroshige saw the Moon Pine in 1856 & was amused enough to make a print of Kiyomizu Hall with Shinobazu Pond and include this pine tree perfectly shaped into a Full Moon to frame the view. The print is more about the vermillion temple and fluffy, pink cherry trees than the Moon Pine, but the print became popular and many travelers ventured to see it.
And yet, something that captures that moment of wonder, framing the view, from decades ago, to inspire modern travelers, that's magic.
In Rome, there is a hedge on a hill we lined up to see the Vatican perfectly framed through the leaves! This is that type of experience- only one place in a lifetime.
Yes, it is a reconstruction. It entails more than a few computer strokes for a computer graphic. It is much more difficult & time-consuming than melting plastic or rubber to form an object. It is a slow-growing, living pine tree that has been painstakingly coached into a Moon shape requiring many years of attention.
I guess that is the epitome of Japanese Bonsai.

上野公園にある清水寛永堂。その不忍池側の境内の一角に、この次の松があります。
それほど大きな松の木ではありませんが、右の部分がぐるっと円を描いているんです。
その昔、京都の清水寺をまねて造られたという清水観音堂。この月の松は、その清水の舞台の前に配されています。歌川広重の浮世絵にも描かれている松です。

The pine tree of the moon stands in front of the terrace of Kiyomizu Kannon-do, a remnant of the Kanei-ji temple which once occupied much of the land now occupied by Ueno Park. The original pine was destroyed years ago in an Edo storm, and has been replaced. This version was installed in 2011. The circle of pine is made by specialized gardeners who wrap the trunk to contort it into the circular shape.
The pine was made famous by the Ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige in his series of prints One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
From the terrace of the temple, you can look straight out through the circle and perfectly frame Benten-do Temple as well as the walkway up to the temple lined with food stalls and crowded with tourists. Lots of tourists enjoy taking their photos framed in the circle. We prefer to photo Benten-do through the pine circle.

The original Tsuki no Matsu was famous in Edo Period, but this one is a recent reconstruction. A pine tree is artificially deformed. It is a kind of Bonsai in a big scale.

清水観音堂の舞台のすぐ近くにあります。
月の松は歌川広重の江戸百景にも描かれた松で、江戸時代に造られたと伝えられていますが、台風で倒壊し現在の松は2012年に復元されたものです。
茅の輪のように丸くなっていて、清水観音堂の舞台から見ると、円内に弁天堂が見えます。

寛永寺、清水観音堂の舞台から見える、丸くなった枝でできている「月の松」です。それだけかも～。
まぁー上野公園内では、見どころの一つかもしれませんね。丸くなった枝からは、弁天堂が見えます。

清水観音堂の前に植えられています。江戸時代からあったもので、現在のものは平成24年に復元された2代目。初代も江戸時代の植木職人の技の粋を凝らして作り上げた造形と見られていますが2代目も現代の造園の技術を駆使して作られたものです。歌川広重の絵にも描かれており、当時の人は風情を感じた事でしょう。今日見ると風情というよりその技術に驚かされました。
