Stayed Feb 10-11, 2017; it was no lie a dark and stormy night. A rarity in Death Valley. My brother, our buddy and I sheltered here with a great fire and a fifth of amazing Stranahan's Diamond whiskey. The wind and rain were driving. The burro and its foal were hunkered down.

My companions slept outside in their tents fearing hantavirus; I braved the cabin and slept peacefully in my ridiculously small bivy.

When I woke the next day the mouse traps were full and I had to manually remove my rodent friends, Sneezy and Coughy and throw them lifelessly into the desert.

We had been waiting years to get the cabin to ourselves, we hit it the day after someone left and it was filled 30 minutes after we departed.

5 stars!

Probably the most adventurous part of the journey is driving to Geologist Cabin. We traveled there entering from the east, from Badwater Road. Conditions of the road are moderate until you get into the canyon, then it becomes very rocky, bumpy and slow going. Do not travel here if you're driving a rental car. A jeep or high clearance vehicle should be used for safest travel. We spotted a couple burro near Warm Springs Camp but once we arrived into Butte Valley the burro's were everywhere, we counted about 30 of them on our way. Geologist Cabin is clean and seemed to be kept up well, with some supplies there to use if needed. Also, interesting journals to read with entries from others who have been here. There's a natural spring just outside with a spectacular view of the valley. The burro appear very interested in us, but also very cautious, not getting too close. Sleeping under the stars in this area is awesome, accompanied by the sounds of Hee Haw, Hee Haw, Hee Haw periodically through the night. Kind of cool actually. Travelers beware that a normal car may not make it to the cabin, so be smart and go with a vehicle you know can make it. And bring plenty of survival supplies for the adventure. Great place to visit for desert lovers.

Geologists cabin is in the southern reaches of Death Valley. Accessed either through the NP from the East or from the West through Goler Wash Goler is a very serious 4wh drive. We arrived in a 4Runner with a locked out rear axle, 15lbs of air in the tires and had a very experienced driver. A wonderful drive from Panamint Valley if you have the proper vehicle and know what you are doing.
Geologist Cabin is one of around a half dozen or so that can be used on a first come first served basis. Do some research before you go and it will be all the more enjoyable.

When we were approaching Geologist's cabin from the east we were stopped by 4 wild burros at the spring in front of the cabin. We paused, took several minutes of video and still pictures. One of the burros, a brown one, has a right ear that hangs down. Makes him/her look kind of comical. We didn't get a good look at them due to the brush to tell if it was a he or a she, but the black one must have been a young male, because one of the larger ones, probably a dominant male, kept chasing him off. I saw him and heard him the following morning laughing at me when I went outside to relieve myself. Oh, and by the way, NO FRENCH FLAGS PLEASE. Haul it out or completely bury it. TP blowing all over the place!

On Saturday the 26th of April, 2003, a group of adventure seeking off-roaders went to visit Mengel Pass and the surrounding area. We enjoyed the beauty of the desert this warm spring day and found pleasure in the company of the Gold Coast Cruisers members and a few guests. We found our way to Russell Cabin only to find it occupied. We then went to "The Geologists Cabin" and were relieved to find the cabin awaiting us. When I opened the door to this little abode, I was surprised to find a meticulously maintained interior! This place is truly a gem! We made ourselves at home and started dinner on the barbeques we had brought. After enjoying our feast, we returned inside to a warm fire, hot cocoa, and good conversation for the remainder of the evening. The atmosphere of this cabin lent to the goodness that we all enjoyed.I would recommend this trip to anyone.Danny GomezGold Coast Cruisers of Ventura County

we came in the "back" way through goler wash in a trusty new japanese 4wd SUV. made it with just a couple hairy moments....

but the cabin took the cake...saw a kit fox or a small coyote drinking from the spring just west of the cabin. we arrived on the weekend right after sept. 11 and flew the american flag that was in a manila envelope behind the door. there was canned food and bottled water for the weary traveller and despite our 3:00 arrival time, it was nice and cool inside. Full of journals dating back maybe 10 years or so.

We camped within sight of the cabin - behind an outcropping of rocks just to the north - and east of striped butte (because we wanted to be scared should a light come on inside after dark!!) as the sun set behind us, we watched a lightning storm fire up the sky far to the east - behind 4 or 5 ranges of mountains.

we left the next morning heading east towards badwater, out of the park, back to 395 and home on the 14.
