Everyone on the trip were wowed. We couldn't believe right here in Trinidad was such a beautiful site to behold. We felt like we were in another place. We were so happy we took the tour. At the beginning we were wondering if we made a mistake but then at the end was a climax. The scarlet ibis were so beautiful against the serene nature which surrounded us on the cloudy evening we visited.

For nature lovers, this is a must. A couple of hours through the mangrove swamps with an expert guide, watching scarlet ibis, blue herons, flamingos, tree boas - what an experience!

We took a guided boat tour through the swamp and saw herons, egrets, flamingos, shorebirds and a large Cook's Tree Boa. The grand finale at dusk was watching the flocks of Scarlet Ibis flying in to roost. Spectacular!

The West coast of Trinidad is deeply indented to form the Gulf of Paria, and the coast of this for 40 km. is a huge mangrove swamp 5 to 10 km. wide that is now a national park. We were driven to the Caroni Bird Park where we boarded broad flat bottom boats and slowly cruised the channels of the swamp to see birds (egrets mainly), snakes and even a tiny ant eater.
Eventually we reached a large mudflat with a thickly forested island in the centre into which vast numbers of crimson ibis were descending. This was the particular attraction of the park, and it was very impressive. The ibis live up to their name and are the most brilliant crimson imaginable, and as they flocked in their hundreds overhead the setting sun caught their colour beautifully, and after roosting in the trees it appeared that there were huge crimson flowers in the forest.

Worth the trip just to see the scarlet ibis come in to roost. Basic facilities but the colour of the ibis is stunning.

Je begint deze excursie rustig en kalm in een boot op weg naar de roze ibissen. Eerst zie je vissen met 2 paar ogen. Daarna kom je enkele slangen tegen die in de mangrove bossen in de bomen zitten. Je ziet kleine rivierkreeftjes die tegen de mangrove wortels omhoog klimmen. Verder vertelt de gids allerlei bijzonderheden over het gebied. Vervolgens kom je op een open water en gaat daar liggen wachten tot de zon bijna ondergaat. Als dat moment is aangebroken kleurt de lucht zich echt roze door alle ibissen die gelijktijdig naar een klein eilandje vliegen alwaar ze gaan overnachten. Ze zijn daar beschermd tegen roofdieren. Het ene moment is het eilandje groen en enkele minuten later is het helemaal roze gekleurd. Eht een geweldig gezicht.

The number of Scarlet Ibises was amazing! We also saw mudskippers, herons, egrets, bats, and caiman.

This is mostly about birds, although other wildlife is certainly present. We were here for birds and especially the scarlet ibis. Its a glorious sight, watching thousands of bright red ibis coming in to roost accompanied by many others, mostly snowy egrets. Our guide was Lester, and he is excellent at spotting things and helping you find them. I would recommend carrying even a small pair of binoculars to get the most out of this visit.
