The whole day we spent there was fantastic, from the welcome drink and cold towel to the afternoon tea. We went for the day, had a guided tour which was informative and we saw a wide variety of plants and animals.
Lunch was excellent.
But, most of all, the staff were so warm, friendly and helpful.
This was our third visit and the recent makeover is impressive.
I loved that we were also able to swim in a natural pool.
I recommend a visit and think that things will only get better.

We have enjoyed the hospitality and relaxation of visiting Asa Wright Nature Centre numerous times since 2007. Whenever in Trinidad, we make time for a visit. Overnight stays are highly recommended and birding at all times of the year highly rewarding.
Jesse James of Members Only Maxi Taxi Services, has been our go to man, to organise these tours and visits.
Not to be missed.

We visited several times during our stay in Trinidad, and everytime it was wonderful. The drive is pretty challenging, but definitely worth it. The view from the terrace is beautiful and the hummingbirds all around you, even right next to your face, is just magical! Also the other birds and animals are so beautiful and interesting! We took the tour 3 times, as it is always nice and you always see something else. We also had lunch 2 times, and the food is delicious. A must during your stay in T&T!

It was recommended to me that I visit the Asa Wright Nature Centre (AWNC) when I was planning my trip to Trinidad and Tobago. When there was a possibility that I may miss it due to timeframes, my tour guide for Trinidad (“Sweet” Nick of Sensational Tours and Transport – look them up!) told me that I simply had to go. I’m very glad that I did.
The AWNC was established in 1967 and is owned by a not-for-profit trust. The main site was originally a plantation for cocoa, coffee and various citrus plants, it became one of the most sought-after birdwatching locations in the Caribbean.
The winding drive from the North is beautiful as it meanders through the rainforest. The drive South and along the highway is much faster but less picturesque.
The former Spring Hill Estate building was built in 1906, and has had a long history of owners and incarnations before Asa Wright and her husband purchased the plantation after World War II.
The AWNC requires advanced reservations according to their website. We notified them that we were attempting to make the afternoon guided walk, but we actually ended up missing it. The guided walks happen twice a day at 10:30 and 13:30 with a highly educated birdwatching staff member. We arrived at 13:50 and after a coffee and some discussion, Nick took us on the tour himself. We still parted with TTD120 each for access. He knew the history of the site etc. We met the guided tour (with only one person) on their return further down the hill from the main building, and joined as we spotted White-bearded Manakins frolicking.
The guide was a huge help in pointing out the birds, and I can only imagine the whole tour to be far more eye-opening. I can’t stress the need for a lens/scope/binoculars though, like any birdwatching event.
The main building has a gift shop and a museum. Take your time admiring the old photos from along the hallways. There’s lunch available, and a bar for afternoon drinks.
We were unable to explore the whole site, due to times, but the tour was enjoyable regardless. We then returned to the main building and stood on the deck watching the hummingbirds and Bananaquits. Much like many locations in Tobago, the hummingbirds were out in force and we spent an extended time watching them feed. Thankfully for my girlfriend, there is a spotting scope on the deck for anyone to use. We witnessed Crested Oropendolas come in to roost and even saw a hawk circling.

Excellent place for bird watching and other wildlife. From the veranda of the main house, you will see all kind of hummingbirds and other birds. Walk down the trail and you will see even more. It’s an easy hike.
Rangers will tell you all about the birds. Informative panels will also help you out. They also have accomodation available. Make sure you drive down the hill before sunset as it’s a steapy road.

We visited Asa Wright for an afternoon in 1999. Not enough. Seriously back last month, avia Caligo Ventures, Asa Wright’s US booking agent. We elected the 10-day, two island tour for a small group of a dozen people. On this Trinidad leg, we were usually accompanied by two guides, Mahase Ramlel and Ceherren Ramdass, who contract with Asa Wright and conduct tours off the property to several very different sites culminating with thousands of Scarlet Ibis returning in the evening to Caroni Swamp. Mahase and Ceherren were both knowledgeable and completely agreeable accommodating to our interests skills. At the Nature Centre itself, younger guides Natalie, Rendell, Barry and Yosanna (among others) were always on hand on the fantastic verandah to spot and identify the amazing variety of birds that stop by and to lead us through the property.
Our room was in one of many small outbuildings and among those that had been renovated fairly recently - air conditioning and a smartly tiled bathroom. Meals were taken in the original house in a large dining room with excellent menu choices reflective of T&T’s rich cultural history. We felt welcomed and comfortable with all of the staff.
Should you elect one of these small tours coordinated through Caligo, I hope you also have our fine good fortune to discover an amazing set of companions who brought almost as much joy to us as the birds. Maybe even more.

I thought I had already made a comment about my stay at this wonderful Nature Centre. I wanted to stay forever. From the moment I stood on the verandah and experienced the White-necked Jacobins chasing each other past my shoulders and buzzing by my ears I was totally enchanted. I was worried as it was a nature centre and I have difficulties sometimes when confronted with crawly nature things. No issues. My room was wonderful. It had a ceiling fan and also an air conditioning unit, if you needed it. The air was only in use if I was hand washing clothing as it was tropical damp. The room was great. Internet in the main building where you could grab a brandy after dinner. Great birding guides provided Am to PM to help with the identification and they were very knowledgable. Our guides for the week were top notch. My group of 12 from Caligo Ventures got along well and all felt we had a great experience. The food was great. Line up for those morning omelettes occur early. Get your coffee and plan your strategy. So much to see. Enjoy this gem of the Caribbean.

We are currently staying in Tobago but had pre-booked our day trip with Newton George as our guide. An amazing experience wandering around the fantastic rain forest listening to the loud Bearded Bellbird calling. The views from the veranda were magnificent. We also enjoyed lunch mixing with the other resident guests. We hope to return one day and spend some days there.

This beautiful ecological space is a marvel. The road trip is long going into the heart of the Northern Range however is very appealing to the eyes. The greenery is amazing.
The Centre itself is a frolic for Nature Lovers in all categories. Birds y Butterflies y Animals of the Forest. And the food is so very appetizing.
Years ago I spent several nights here for a Corporate Retreat. Never forgot the nice night forest sounds.
This is a must visit for travelers to Sweet TnT.

it's not strenuous - a gentle incline to walk down then back up less than a kilometer. trails are wide and clear. lots of beautiful flowers and birds along the way.

Hi, I don't know your best to contact them, they have guides, forestry and hospitality people there.
It's pretty basic but also feels timeless, like a colonial location.

I think your review of this place which obviously did not treat you with the respect which you so obviously thought you deserved, being of the former British landlords.
I've visited as many countries as you, perhaps more. Your review strikes me as one reason it took me many years to finally visit the UK. Your attitude.
Now, I ask. Just what the hail did you expect the place to be upon YOUR arrival??

Hi Bella - I'm going to be in TT for a week at the end of the month and am quite interested in visiting the Asa Wright Centre. Can you tell me how you traveled to the site?
Viatour wants to charge almost $150 US to take me there for a half-day tour and that seems very expensive to me. Any information you could provide would be appreciated.
