We really enjoyed our visit to the castle. It is a beautiful place that has been lovingly restored. The guided tour information, signs about the family and their livers and the history of the house make for an interesting afternoon. One of the best things to do in Victoria.

We really enjoyed this self guided tour. The castle itself is beautiful to walk through. Lots of wood, period artifacts and interesting facts about each room. We purchased our tickets along with the hop on hop off ones. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Victoria.

Beautiful historic home. They did a great job highlighting the various eras of habitation, and describing how they will continue to restore the various rooms to represent different periods and inhabitants. I did find it difficult to track the original family members and their stories; this could have been done much more cohesively. Overall very well done.

The castle is well maintained and its story unfolds as you make your way through this beautiful structure and home. Attention to detail helps to lay bare somethings that may have been kept quiet “back in the day”. Take the time to read the stories about the former inhabitants. There are large poster boards one can flip through to gain a good sense of who they were. Each room is carefully displayed with pieces of the time to depict what life was like. They certainly forged ahead and got as many comforts of the day that were available at that time. You have a full view of Victoria and as it is built on the highest point, the castle can be seen from all below.

Very interesting visit to Craigdarroch Castle. The film helps to tell the story of the Dunsmuir family and the subsequent use of the house. Interesting to read about the trust’s future plans too. We were able to get in for free as National Trust members which was an added bonus.

This place is breathtaking from the outside. I don't recommend paying to go inside, it has been modernized and feels like an ordinary house. It has modern lighting, power outlets in the walls and heating sometimes in front of the old fireplaces. Was a swing and a miss for my family.

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide some feedback on your visit. When Craigdarroch was completed in 1890 it was built with electrical and gas lighting, working bathrooms, a telephone, central heating and many other modern conveniences for the time. Some of the modernization you are referring to were installed when Craigdarroch became a Military Hospital in 1919. They installed additional radiators and made several modifications to the building. A real exciting trip into the past.
Easy to find. Ample parking. Great scenery.
The castle itself was a real charmer. Good process to walk through the castle with information about all of the features. Well maintained. Could spend hours there.
A good gift store.

The castle is open Thursday to Sunday. We were supposed to reach Victoria by sunday noon, so we planned our visit in the evening. Unfortunately our flight was late and by the time we reached, the castle was closed. Was able to go around the exterior and take some pictures!

Craigdarroch Castle is a MASSIVE house in Victoria with a unique history. It was interesting to hear about all the different uses this house has held over the years and there were a lot of historical items throughout the house. Some areas could have been staged better but overall, not a bad experience.

Are there handrails on the staircases? Also are the steps steep?

There are hand rails yes. As for the stairs they were all good. The staircases were also wide so you could go at your own pace.
How far is the castle from downtown can you walk from downtown?

Give me more information. How old are you? Are you healthy? A healthy single individual can easily walk to the castle. Families, elderly and and handicapped should take a ten dollar taxi. Like all castles, it sits up on a hill. What castle doesn't? It costs ten dollars to take a taxi to the castle from downtown. Healthy? Walk. Otherwise, take a taxi.

The movie plays every hour on the half hour (9:30, 10:30, 1130, etc) and runs about 35 mins.

No, no, and, sadly, no. This home has been restored to pre handicapped accessible condition. They did not consider such things in 1898, or the technology was not available in the area, or the old Scotsman who had it built was to thrifty. 19th century Scots considered such things and then spent a fortune on books in a library they did not even read as well as making certain they had a specific spoon for peas then said 'An elevator? jWasteful'. Sorry.

How long do people typically spend viewing/touring the Craigdarroch Castle?

Hi, and thanks for your inquiry! Because the tour is self-guided, you can take as long as you want. We generally recommend a minimum of 1 hour for a visit, though many visitors will take quite a lot more time than that. On average, it's probably about 80-90 minutes, with people who are extra passionate about stained glass, woodwork, or historic house museums taking up to 3 hours.

All visits to the Castle are self-guided (ie/ there is no tour guide, although there are docents stationed throughout the house to answer questions). All our information materials (including a history pamphlet and the map) are available in French.

Is photography allowed inside the Castle? I would not be using a tripod or flash.

Casual photography, including flash, is indeed permitted inside the Castle, though tripods and selfie sticks are not. This does not include any formal photography- ie/ posed wedding, engagement photos which causes problems for other visitors and must be booked for after hours.
