The problem with visiting the museum now (and for the foreseeable future) is that more than half the museum is closed, yet visitors are still being charged full price for admission. The parts of the museum that are open are well done, but there really isn't any good value here unfortunately.

This is a great museum with a primary focus on British Columbia as a region and its environment. The displays are well-researched and well-presented. It is a great spot for children of all ages over the age of 7 or 8. There is plenty of good information for adults.....it is primarily geared to adults and near-adults. The displays change over time and special exhibits are common so no matter how many times you have visited, each visit is new.
The IMAX theater is adjacent. I recently viewed three nature films one afternoon and enjoyed all three. IT is a great place to hand out if the weather is inclement and i hear their popcorn is top quality too.

This was easily one of the best museums I have visited. The natural history gallery was incredibly well done. I loved the undersea exhibit and the ecosystem exhibits. Having to search for the different plants and animals was a nice touch! My kids had a good time and it was a great way to spend and afternoon.

The Japanese internment section was poignant.
Most of the natural history was a little dry. Interesting enough for 1-2 hours on a rainy day, but don’t go out of your way.

The museum was recommended by our tour guide so we thought we would pop in with the afternoon free. Some very interesting exhibits, the Canadian history with the Japanese was very much an eye opener and had not heard of this history before. Interesting and well presented yet at times a very sad read.
The exhibits in the various sections within the museum were very well presented and the information at each was clear and informative. One floor within the museum was not open due to a refurbishment. Nice shop with some very nice items and souvenirs to buy. Enjoyed our visit.

I so wanted this to be like London's British museum. I had previewed it online. I couldn't believe one exhibit was pics of people social distancing. I did not darken this door. A second- the deterrment of Japanese Canadians. While I hadn't considered this travesty was commited in other countries, not something I couldn't experience at home. Caught a couple of IMAX movies, always love these. Greatly appreciated the coat check. If your trying to decide how to divide your time between natural wonders and touted sights, this is a safe skip.

The museum is under renovation and all we saw was the natural history portion. My daughter and I were in and out after 30 mins. It was underwhelming to be honest.

This museum is undergoing some work so is not all open at the moment.
What we did see was two very moving exhibitions. The first one about covid and the effect it had on the people of Vancouver Island. The second was a much darker side of Canada's history in the way they treated the Japanese immigrant families, who had been settled for many generations in the country after world war 2. I defy anyone to read and hear these stories and not be moved.
As I come from the UK I know what it is to be ashamed of your own countries, mistreatment of immigrant families. Our own history is shameful going back many centuries.
Somehow as a newer country built by immigrants I mistakenly thought Canada would be a more tolerant country. The way they treated their own citizens of Japanese extraction, was on par to how Hitler treated the Jews. The only thing the Canadians didn't do was actually exterminate them. They did leave them to starve to death though. Until this day these people have not had there property or business returned or compensated for. I believe it has recognised that the treatment metered out to them was wrong.
Canada, get your act together and sort this out.
If a museum exhibition can affect you in this way. Then it is doing its job.
They had a very good exhibition on climate change as well. But I think Canada has a long way to go to get that under control.

RBCM Archives - suggest you call direct re. access to Archives, 250-256-7226. St. Ann's Academy - there is disabled access available by arrangement during opening hours. St. Ann's Archives is not at the Academy... has its own web site - best to enquire re. access via that, 250- 953-8829. Good luck!

No they are not. There are not many "pet" appropriate areas for animals in the city centre. Lots in the surrounding municipalities.

We are arriving by Cruise Ship (Norwegian) on Friday June 16th. what is the best way to get from port to Museum? Is it close enough to walk or should we get a ride? Also according to website it says weekend hours are until 10pm, is that accurate? Thank you for any help

Hey Misty,
Google maps says it is a 23 minute walk from Ogden point, where the cruise ships come in. Not too bad, all flat ground and if you follow the water, some very nice things to see like the inner harbour and legislature buildings. Lots of taxis and etc are there as well. City buses and tour buses run in that area too. But if you are healthy, it is a great easy walk.
Friday and Saturday the museum is open 10am to 10pm. The rest of the week is 10am-5pm.
Enjoy!
