The site was the world's first hydroelectric megaproject, under the guidance of the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario, chaired by Sir Adam Beck. When built, it was the largest hydroelectric generating station in the world. The site would be renamed the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station in 1950. Adam Beck II began operations in 1954. This second site was the cause of the 1965 blackout in the northeastern part of North America, affecting 30M people. 'Big Becky', the world's largest boring machine at the time, was used for six years earlier this century to bore a replacement tunnel to supply water from the upper Niagara River over a distance of 10.2 kilometers. The tunnel itself was 14.4 meters in diameter. A 40M tour is available.

We just happened to drive by this place. It is really a cool ambiance. We had the chance to take a quick pic and enjoy the scenery.

Visiting Canadian friends with friends from home, we stopped by here en route to points north to see this hydropower generating station.
The Sir Adam Beck II Generating Station is one of several attractions along the Niagara Parkway. It harnesses power from the Niagara River.
The friend talking to us about this station said that it has 16 units that generate 1,499 MW of electricity which is enough energy to power 140,000 homes a year.
The explanation of why the station was located here and not at Niagara Falls was interesting. It had to do with affecting tourism and how many feet the river dropped near here and at Niagara Falls. It was explained that this location produced 80% of the power that could have come from a Niagara Falls location without affecting the scenic beauty of the falls which generates millions of dollars from tourism. Consequently, they built two tunnels 9 km long which is about 5.6 miles.
This was done in conjunction with the power-generating operations on the other side of the river in New York. Canada and the United States had signed the Niagara Diversion Treaty of 1950. The Canadians built this facility. The Americans built the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station almost directly across the river from this one. A new 10.2 km tunnel was added in 2013 to increase capacity at this facility.
It is the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station in New York that tourists see when they look across the river from the parking area at the Sir Adam Beck II Generating Station. The photos showing a full view of the front of a power plant are actually of the New York plant in the United States.
At one time, one could tour the power plant, but tours were stopped due to security concerns.
Although one can no longer tour this power plant, it’s worth a stop to see some of it from the parking area, the Niagara River, and the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station across the river.
We rate the Sir Adam Beck II Generating Station at 4.0. We recommend a stop.

There are no tours of this area any longer. However, seeing this power station and the US power station across the river make one realize the sheer force and power of moving water.

Short drive from the Floral Clock and Queenston Heights are you drive south to the touristy area of Niagara Falls. Majestic. Worth a stop for engineering and science enthusiasts. This and the Moses Plant across the river on the NY side are both impressive.

This station is pretty impressive as it harnesses some of the power of the Niagara River to help supply electricity to the surrounding area. It is right near the famous floral clock and just on the outskirts of Niagara Falls and is accessible by the Wego transportation system. We were not able to go for a tour through the station, but could see it from a lookout area beside the station as well as from the floral clock site.

There are those who would blow these places up and restore the river to its former splendor if they could, but I have always been fascinated with the possibilities and blessings nature can provide to the needs of mankind .

La vista dall'alto della centrale è compresa più o meno in tutti i fuor delle cascate da Toronto... A me non ha detto nulla di particolare, se visitate le cascate in autonomia non consiglio questa sosta!

The building is not open for tours, but you could park at either the small roadside parking lot at the south end of the plant or the floral clock and view the penstocks on the edge of the gorge.
