This was closer to our hotel than I at first thought and was fairly easy to get to. There is paid parking here, but you have 30 minutes free. For us this was fine as we merely wanted to get some photos there. Unfortunately it was a very cold and windy way so it was a quick stop, shoot and leave kind of visit. The ground were all decorated with pumpkins for Hallowe'en and it looked like they were to a lot of effort to do this. The inside area was not open when we were there so I don't know know what this was like.

We did the underground tour and it was very informative. They asked for child volunteers several times which my kids loved. The giant nickel was very cool and my kids absolutely loved the science playground.

Enjoyed spending the day discovering all things regarding minerals & mining .. even panned for gold .. and when we found some, they said we could keep what we found .. we left it there for the younger ones panning for gold

Too many items in interactive displays here where not working! Ironically, right from the parking gate (yes they charge extra for parking) which did not work and needed assistance from a worker, to vending machines, to washroom facilities.

Do the mine tour unless your kids get bored fast (just over an hour). Kate was an excellent guide. Lots of interactive exhibits for kids of all ages

The nickel was amazing and very shiny. The tour itself was good, definitely need a sweater though. Gives a good idea on how things were. Our guide Jadyen tried hard to accommodate the kids on the tour.

This is a daycare, not a museum or educational center. It does seem great for kids, stuff to climb on, crayons to draw with, and maybe an incidentally learned datum here or there. But when you come into this place, the desk person (who's nice enough) really should tell any adult without children that this is, at best, a children's museum. I felt like an old man creeping at the kiddie park. I blame also my Moon guidebook, which said I would learn something about the history and science of local mining here. I didn't. The only compelling display for adults is the historical photos that line the hallway to the restroom, and that about sums up the institution's priorities. What a waste of money, C$16 I'll never get back. At least I was there less than a half hour, so parking was free. I don't know at what point parking fees kick in--you can't get to the outdoor Big Nickel without entering the gated parking lot--but having to pay for parking on top of the steep admission fee would have been a real kick in the behind, literally on the way out the door.

We appreciate the feedback and are sorry to hear that your visit to Dynamic Earth did not meet your expectations. Yes, we do have our outdoor science park and an indoor play structure that are geared towards a family audience. Additionally, we also have many exhibits that are very informative and can be enjoyed by people of all ages, such as our Sudbury re-greening story, the Sudbury impact structure history, as well as a handful of wonderful short films playing in our Epiroc theater throughout the day. We also have our underground tour that is an hour long walk through the history of Sudbury mining, and our Nickel City Stories object theater that describes Sudbury’s history and touches on the Sudbury re-greening story, these experiences seem to align with what you were looking for from your visit. Parking is free for the first hour which would allow enough time to visit and get pictures with the Big Nickel as well as have the opportunity to learn about some of Sudbury’s geology with our outdoor signage around our site. We would be happy to hear about your visit to Dynamic Earth, please feel free to email me at emilie.fournier@sciencenorth.ca

We stopped in Sudbury to see this 13,000kg. replica of the 1951 Canadian 5-cent coin.
It was hard to imagine that 15,000 years ago a sheet of ice more than a kilometre thick covered this Dynamic Earth site. As this glacier flowed to the southwest, the rock surface below was scoured, scratched and polished by sand and stones lodged in its base. Polished surfaces on the bedrock can be seen along with scratches and grooves on the rock surface.

Are shorts okay to wear through the tour with jacket?
Wetherstone P

Sure shorts are fine for the underground tour. It is damp and cool...there is water on the ground in some places so closed shoes would be best or if wearing sandals watch where you are walking.

Do I have to book online? I would prefer to save my visit for a rainy day but that may not be possible if I have to pre-book.

You should pre book. If you just show up you may be disappointed if they are sold out. The day we were there they were at capacity.
During our guided tour we went down an elevator shaft that makes you feel like you're going way down. However, how far down do you actually travel?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi!
The underground tour takes you 22m underground. That is roughly 70ft or 7 stories underground. Thank you for taking the time to leave a question!

Do you need closed toe shoes?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi!
We will not stop you from going on the tour in sandals, but we do recommend sturdy shoes. It is a gravel floor and it can be quite wet at times; proper footwear ensures you get the most comfortable experience!

Is there a minimum age for going underground?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi Caitlyn P.,
We do not have a minimum age for going underground so feel free to bring your little one(s)! We also offer strollers in the event that you wish not to use your own. The tours last approx. 1h15min which can be long for little ones. If at any point you'd like to return to surface simply let your guide know and they will make arrangements. We hope to see you soon!

Is there parking space for trucks towing a 25' travel trailer.
MaryLou A
Salmon Arm, Canada12 đóng góp
Yes there is ample room for parking with a large trailer. However; if you go there on a vrry busty day you may find it difficult to maneuver around the other vehicles in the parking lot.

I hope this helps answer your question! If you have any others please feel free to give us a call at (705) 522-3701 and we would be happy to help.
We look forward to seeing you,

Is this suitable for teenagers? I feel like they may be bored. Thanks!

The mine tour was unique- however teenagers (unless interested in such) will likely be bored. There aren't many hands on activities for them compared with science north. Most of the other activities (outside of the tour) are geared for younger children. They do have unique simulation 'games', but often there is a wait. Overall I would bypass.

I was wondering the schedule for the underground mines I have my son and grandchildren visiting from out west and would like to take them
Hi Judy!
Our underground tour schedule is variable as we have tour groups that can book our timeslots. That said, we have about 18 tours a day, or 2-3 per hour. We do have exhibits and shows here to keep you busy until your tour commences :D
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to send me a message at mcguire at sciencenorth . ca
Hope to see you soon!
