Hate to sound whiny but wanted to share our full experience. I pre-booked a bungalow here online for five nights in Tonsai. Our first night my wife and I both got travelers diarrhea (or “Tonsai Tummy” as the locals call it, which says something about the sanitation standards here), and were in and out of the bathroom with flashlights, since they turn off the generator around 3am. Now we’re in middle of the jungle and I realize there’s bugs, but there were anthills in the bathroom (which doesn’t have a sink by the way), cockroaches everywhere, and we can hear the mice in the walls chewing all night long. I booked a place on Railay for the rest of our stay so that we could recover with air con, and when I went to check out the European woman said I couldn’t get a refund unless we were sick or just wanted to switch rooms. I told her how sick we had been all night and asked again for a refund but instead she backtracked and said since we booked ahead online it wasn’t possible.

We had previously paid for a deep water solo trip with them for two days later. I would have liked to pay for it with the money that we paid for the room but that wasn’t an option. For about $50/person it was pretty expensive compared to other equivalent half-day trips (snorkeling, kayaking, longtail, etc.) but they are the only climbing shop to offer DWS trips.

Overall it seemed Basecamp Tonsai just wanted our money and we felt deceived. The least I can hope for is that some percentage of the money we lost here was used toward the titanium rebolting projects in the area.

When we booked we said that we climbed few times but never DWS. The lady at the office said that is was not a problem. But trust me this was not for beginners! First you need to be strong enough to climb the 3m high rope (no ladder as expected) and it starts at 6a. I couldn't climb more than 1m after the rope. And some "non fit" girls couldn't even climb the rope.
Then I think this is expensive for 4 tries in the all day.

The staff was kind and patient (not very helpful when you are bad at climbing) and lunch on the beach was cool

If you hesitate to sign for the DWS tour, seriously, don't! We were a group of six people and we all enjoy ourselves above expectations! The guide provided us great climbing advice but was also really funny.

At the end of a climb (or in the middle if your arms don't make it), the rush of adrenaline from the jump is awesome ;)

Definitely a must do at railey, tonsai !

DWS in the low season is a gamble, so don't come expecting it. We were so glad to catch a lucky day and do it, but it took 3 days of showing up and asking every morning.

We did a half day climb while we waited for better wave conditions and the guide was great. A bit skeezy (commenting about bikini wearing beach goers), but the climbing was good.

We also stayed in their forest resort for 3 nights, which was CHEEEEEAP. Be ready for cold showers, pokey beds, and power for only a few hours per day.

Unfortunately the deep water solo trip is currently not running, as the nature park has banned this activity in Thailand. We do hope that in the future this ban will be lifted, the Railay Climbing Club has been in discussion with them regarding what it would take to reopen, however currently we have no updated information to provide.

My husband is a climber which is what put Tonsai Beach on our itinerary. Tonsai is a great place to reset your mind and is stunning! I don't use that word but there is no other word to describe it. He went to base camp and made a reservation to climb the next day. He went with about five other climbers and guide. They climbed some on Tonsai and some at Railay Beach. He had a blast and went again the following. When I asked him if he would do it again. YES!!

My best advice is to add Tonsai to your itinerary and put it first on your list. I am warning you though you may not leave.

I rented gear from Basecamp for 4 1/2 days of climbing in Railay / Tonsai. The staff was friendly and had suggestions about where to head, but the gear rental was fairly pricey and badly worn. I had to return the first set of quickdraws because 4/12 were sticky to the point of not closing. The first rope was also coreshot on one end. First pair of shoes had zipties to thread the straps through which broke almost immediately. Carabiners were sticky, belay device (some off brand) hard to feed / take with, and the GriGri I rented for a multipitch day was dirty / rusty. Equipment badly needs to be updated (retired!).

Hi, I join the base camp for the deep water solo.
It is something to do, definitely.
But be careful when booking this activity.
The initial price was 1500.b.
But once we were on the beach, the employee asked us 500.b more because we weren't enough people.
We refused to pay more.
We visited 2 spots.. great, then we had a lunch onto a very nice beach..
We were expecting to climb again after the lunch, but the employee returned to the base camp...
Much earlier than expected!!
He had decided to reduced the activity because we were only 3..
This is not correct!
As a summary, go for it, but be sure about what you pay for!

I came to Railay Beach do deep water soloing and was initially disappointed to hear from multiple sources, from my hostel to other climbing stores, that DWS is banned and that no companies offer it anymore. However, Basecamp Tonsai still offers DWS, and I had a blast.

They took my group of 5 (you need at least 5 to book the trip, and you can book day before) to 2 rock islands, each with multiple routes from easy to challenging. Our guide was an experienced climber who pointed out routes and even showed us some beta. We had a half day trip that lasted til 2pm, and for lunch we went to an island with a beautiful beach all to ourselves, which also was fun for snorkeling.

I never felt safety from falling was an issue, as the routes were overhanging deep, clear water. Everything was provided, including a simple but great lunch. They already set up chalkbags at the rocks. If you didn’t bring shoes, there is a graveyard of old climbing shoes (with varying sizes of holes) from which to choose.

I came again another day to do lead climbing with Basecamp, which was also a great experience. Overall an amazing experience here, with DWS being the must-do if you are a climber!
