A brilliant, well-preserved castle. You can either walk round the outside (round the moat) paying no more than the cost of parking but, if you want to go into the interior, then you have to obtain your tickets from the Visitor Centre. There's a fairly large car park (free to National Trust members) and the usual NT refreshments are available from the onsite cafe. In warmer weather, the grounds round the Castle are conducive to sitting back and admiring the Castle from afar.

The castle itself was incredible & made for a worth while visit.
The thigh workout was a nice added extra lol. Climb the Towers & you’ll feel it too.
Tips & Suggestions for the National Trust (I don’t usually leave negative reviews on here, but if you have a dog, please read)
If you are taking the dog, be ready to be separated from your friends/families, as dogs are not allowed within the castle. This means we couldn’t share the experience & it was rushed because we didn’t want to leave each other outside alone for a lengthy period of time.
If you are going in. with the dog in tow. check the castle cafe is open, or bring a flask/stanley with you if you’re going to sitting with the pooch.
suggestions for staff:
signage’s needs to be clearer and staff friendlier.
If dogs aren’t allowed inside the (dogs welcome) signs should stipulate clearly ‘not inside the castle’.
Signs should also say at pay point or when paying for parking that there are closures within. As there was no Pill Box or Internal Cafe during our visit.
When asking for info, do not expect a warm welcome.

Half term Monday 17th - very busy car park with cars queuing on narrow road. Staff member on walkie talkie marshalling the queue was distinctly unhelpful - couldn't care less attitude. Lots of cars parked on the road, in dangerous positions as no spaces in car park. Gave up and returned later when the peak lunchtime visits had died down. £4 to park unless you are a NT member. Staff at ticket office unhelpful and unenthusiastic. It didn't feel like a welcome - just a transaction. The 'gate' staff the actual gatehouse were lovely and cheery. Disappointed with the lack of information panels inside- there was nothing inside to guide you through the wonderful building. Apart from a short film in one of the 'rooms' there was nothing to tell the story or bring the castle to life. Another 'room' played a short video about the bats that occupy the castle. No-one stayed to watch this - it was dull beyond belief. What a poor offering for such a stunning castle. Is that the best you can do for 600 plus years of history - the bats? And it was half term. A missed opportunity to excite and educate children.
The toilets near the castle were appalling - filthy floors, wet seats, loo roll holders rolling about. Vile. Informed the information desk when I left and the initial response was 'they are checked once a day' - NT staff were more defensive than the castle battlements. Wouldn't return.

Archetypal mediaeval castle in a beautiful setting, with ducks on the moat. Excellent video presentations inside. Well worth a visit.

The castle looks imposing as you approach it and does not disappoint once you are inside. The kids loved it. Go for a day out and take the old train from Tenterden.

Visited Bodiam Castle whilst staying up the road in Sandhurst. Unfortunately we visited on the day of Storm Bert so opening hours reduced and no access to towers. But enjoyed visiting the rest of the castle. Will be back, so thar we can visit the towers.

This Castle is an easy walk from the preserved Kent and East Sussex Railway.
It is about a 400 metre walk from the bus stop and car park.
It was enjoyable to climb 56 spiral steps using the excellent handrails to one of the battlements.
The rooms were full of Halloween themes in which I had no interest.
The only toilets seemed to be at the car park buildings.

Went with my mom, husband, wife, two dogs. The castle is very beautiful. The cafe is cute. The area is very spacious. My dogs are very happy to run around. The area is very spacious and shady. The garden is beautiful. It is suitable for a relaxing day, walking and enjoying the beauty.

A wet miserable day called for a visit to Bodium Castle (we checked Leeds and Hever Castle but far too expensive).
Free entry and free parking as we're members of the National Trust (free parking for Blue Badge holders with dedicated parking spaces).
Ticket office, seperate shop, tea room and toilets in main carpark.
After presenting ourselves and membership cards to the ticket office we were advised to present the NT membership cards again at the castle.
An easy walk to the castle and were greeted by a bridge decorated with colourful bunting. The moat that surrounds the castle was bustling with fish, ducks and wildlife (feeding prohibited).
Helpful and friendly staff showed us which parts of the castle are accessible (mainly the towers) as this castle is a ruin.
A wizard (in one of the towers) was there to help children cast spells to keep evil away but we had much fun being there as adults.
Managed a few steps into a tower but was too difficult (steep and narrow helical staircase)
so backed out
Photos had been produced to try and predict what this place might have looked like in its heyday (documentation has been lost over the years).
Ended up in the shop and treated myself to a brimmed hat, gloves and greeting cards. Lovely helpful staff gave our mascot sheep, Sam, a NT passport (retails at £5) which we will get stamped at other NT properties.
Thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, lovely warm and welcoming staff.
Events held for families during half-term and holidays.

Great castle and moat. Huge Koi carp in the moat. Film was most interesting. Great views from battlements & to think that it was'nt so far from the sea centuries ago. Nice cuppa afterwards & sunshine made it a lovely afternoon trip.

Is the castle open yet? On website says not but i see on here people have put they walked in the castle

No, the castle is NOT open. Only the grounds, cafe and toilets are open.

Are the Castle grounds worth a visit? Was wondering how large The grounds are, Are there any gardens or forest areas that could keep our toddler busy for at least a couple hours and worth an our and half drive?

I would also tend to say no. The best thing about the gardens is the view of the castle. Not much else to note. In my view this is not a place to travel to unless you can enter the castle which is worth a visit when it re-opens.

Yes you can. The site is an open one. You cannot go into the castle but you can walk ariund it. You will have to park on the road though. Good luck!

When we went before, there used to be transport (I think a horse and buggy?) between the station and the castle, but apparently this has stopped. As we will have small children (2&4) in tow this time, does anyone know of any other way of getting between these two locations? I don't even remember if taxis are available, it was a long time ago!

You need to check with the National Trust - think how embarrassing it could be if you just turned up!
I guess it also depends on exactly how and where you wish to do this and wheter you are an amateur or a professional photographer....

If it is after 5, the site is closed to visitors but they may do a special price for you to just go up to take photos. It seems a perfect spot - I'm sure others have done the same.
There is a link on he website for weddings at Bodiam Castle. Have a look there for information.
