The great day in the history of the 20th century told in such a simple but engrossing way to retell the story of the day and the stories of those there. Heart warming, endearing and inspiring to read see and submerge yourself in. And the tank landing craft was awesome.

I visited as part of National Lottery participation week and so entry was free with evidence of a lottery purchase. Overall I spent just under 3hrs taking everything in (but I do have an interest in military history!) - the experience is enhanced with the free and simple to operate audio guide which explains the various exhibits in a succinct manner. You start the visit by taking a short walk to the imposing landing craft and then back into the main museum. The intricate detail of the Overlord Embroidery is particularly impressive. My only negative observation was a lot of the inside area and displays are too dark to see/read easily, especially the embroidery - maybe due to the effect of having too much light on fabrics etc? There’s a cafe at the far end of museum reception area and a gift shop. The museum is well worth a visit for all ages.

I booked this museum after seeing very good reviews on TripAdvisor.
My husband and I thought it was absolutely brilliant. The staff were friendly and professional. We visited the landing craft outside first, as advised, which was fascinating in itself. We then went back into the main museum. The audio guides we used were very easy to use, ( & clean). The detail of all the displays was in- depth with extra info' available through colour coordinated buttons on the audio guides. EVERYTHING worked, which made a pleasant change in smaller museums.
The amount of original items from the actual D-day landings on display was SO interesting and quite moving at times. The display of The Overlord Embroidery was astounding. We were there for about 2 hours, (not including the time spent in the cafe). We had a reasonably priced cappuccino & slice of cake each in the cafe, service with a smile from the young man who bought our coffees over. HIGHLY recommend a visit if you're in Portsmouth.

Situated just outside of town, on the grassy prom, v well organised with free audio tour, lots of back ground information about the day, but very impressive by the Overlord Embroidery, worth a trip on its own.

Formerly quite a military-museum buff alongside my former media day-job, sadly in the latter part of my freelance career it has to be said that some important WW-II museums didn't get a look in as time was not always my own, so now in my semi-retirement there is some catching to do.
Therefore, when my other semi-retired pal from the TV world suggested a trip down to the famous D-Day Museum on Southsea's Clarence Esplanade, I thought why not,..its been about 30 years since my last visit..so on a very cold, (and I mean gale-force-something!!) day we both bowled up along the sea front..to be met by a massive LCT (Landing Craft-Tank)..which was my first-surprise!
I say surprise because it was not that long ago that I was watching yet another WW-II documentary on D-Day on the TV in the corner of my office and I looked up from my desk to see a chap doing his 'piece to camera'..and he was standing inside an LCT 'in France' under a quite swanky cover protecting it from the elements ...or so I thought!
I don't think any mention was made that the LCT was actually sited here... on the UK's South Coast! A fascinating start to be sure!
Then having been welcomed into the museum, (on a Senior Citizen's concession ticket ..dang! when did that happen?..I'm still 25 in my own mind. but thank you for the welcome discount!), both aforesaid pal and I entered firstly, the world famous D-Day Tapestry display..and oh boy!... is that something to behold or what?
Having a whole rotunda to itself... plus an ante-room devoted to the story behind its incredible making.. it really is some piece of work; and set in a darkened room carefully & cunningly lit, it really brings out the power of the piece. Absolutely wonderful work!
But getting to surprise two... when we entered the 'main museum' I was at first dismayed to see it looking 'all shiny & new'... and as if the 'thin-spectacled ad & design men from London' had also got their hands on this museum too, (as they have with a number of others across the country), and turned it from a museum to an 'interactive experience for children' and without many original artefacts on display.
But no...continuing with the low light theme, unfolding before our eyes was a most attractive & enticing set of carefully thought-out displays and myriad show cases interspersed with vehicles, weaponry & heavy kit..again all picked out with cleverly located spotlights and background colour lighting to help set the scene..and I have to say... it really worked.. Yay!. 👍
In addition many of the walls were adorned with very attractive tableaux, photos and explanations..and though I am not a great fan of the 'new modern-museum-look' generally, (as they often lose something in translation, not least the evocative mustiness and that oily aroma of military hardware), down here at the D-Day Museum, it really works and I found myself led from display to display eager to see what was coming next!
I have to say some of the kit on display relating to D-Day June 6th 1944, (much of it, it appears, donated from families of soldiers who 'were actually there'), is quite extraordinary and the US D-Day involvement is told just as much as the UK one..with the Canadians too, (a major invasion participant), not far behind..and I found it something of a privilege to be so close to many of the personal artefacts from these young warriors on that famous day!
Finally forgetting just how cold the day was outside, my pal, (whose dad served in the Navy in WW-II) and I spent a totally absorbing couple of hours in the Museum and I have to say it was a riveting experience..!
But we were not finished for, in the well appointed cafe, we each had the most superb cup of cappuccino to fortify ourselves, before going outside again, where entry right up and into the 'dry-moored' LCT was also on offer... and part of the entrance fee.
So having enjoyed our coffee, we braced ourselves for the icy blasts and went outside once again and walked up the nearby footpath to the LCT's ramp, where we met by a charming young lady, (very well rugged up against the cold), and were invited on-board, with the apology that going top-side above the LCT's small bridge was not permitted, so worried were they that the gales would topple any unwary visitor over the side.
With this in mind, we spent another engrossing half hour or so exploring this amazing vessel, (the only surviving LCT in the UK we were told), and I was amazed by something else that had never before crossed my mind: these large Landing Craft- Tanks carried a skipper and a small crew who actually lived aboard the vessel at the stern end.
So climbing up as high as we were allowed in the conditions, we came across a small cabin devoid of anything except a large ship's wheel and a small port hole through which to steer the vessel onto the invasion beaches...so this was the wheelhouse..no 'bells or whistles' other than a communication tube..surprisingly spartan for its vital naval task..!
Behind that was another small solitary cabin: the skipper's 'quarters'... opposite which was a tiny galley and behind that in the stern, an equally small space for the small band of 'ship's company' to sleep & eat: one small table above which their hammocks swung from the bulk-heads...no comfortable war-time cruise this.. obviously!
As I say, something of an eyeopener for we all see, on TV, the small landing craft hitting the beaches and disgorging their infantry into the teeth of enemy fire, but these larger tank-toting vessels actually carried a small, permanent Royal Naval crew who lived aboard the LCT.. absolutely fascinating and a real bonus on which to end our, (icy), trip down to Southsea.
Hopefully we will return again, when the weather is that much warmer and when we can hopefully complete the exploration of the higher sections of the bridge, with its two anti-aircraft guns still in situ...after all, boys will be boys!
So all in all, though this is now one of the 'modern' London-type museum make-overs, (by the looks of it), to my eyes this one happily bucks the trend in that it is actually still full of wonderful, thought-provoking artefacts that all help tell the story of the largest military invasion in modern history..!
Sadly today's military museum visits are not the 'cheap days out' I recall from the long school holidays of my youth, but here the D-Day Museum also offers family ticket packages & multi-visit discounts, which will all help the budgets go a bit further and so makes this cracking attraction a 'real must' for all history buffs, young or old... and their imaginative gift shop's not too bad either!! 👍

A must visit in Portsmouth, the D-Day Story is an emotional experience where we learnt all about a poignant time in history. The interpretation was really accessible and the videos were well done, particularly the first video as you enter the main museum. The male volunteer who greeted us at the landing craft outside (didn't catch name but on duty January 2nd at 10am) was very helpful, especially when it came to helping us with the pushchair on the bumpy surface. Thank you.

This is a must see place for anyone who wants to understand what these people went through. It’s not all about the li es of our military, it’s about every who was affected from the smallest child collecting badges to the leaders who planned D day and our freedom. Take time to read the stories. Worth every penny.

There's 3 parts to the 'Story', all interesting to see; the large LCT (landing craft for tanks) which makes quite a land mark feature, then the Story about D-Day inside - very informative and enlightening. Then the Overlord Embroidery which is very impressive. I would say it's as good as the Bayeux tapestry. Staff very helpful too.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and a guided tour of the landing craft Susan was very informative and we enjoyed her showing us around the overlord embroidery was amazing to see plus the rest of the museum was also fascinating and very interesting I've wanted to visit this museum for many years and it didn't disappoint thank you to all involved

Small museum, but lots to see. Including the LCT outside the museum. Also, the tapestry which is very detailed. Allow a couple of hours to go around the exhibits. Lots of volunteers on hand to answer your questions.

We won't have a lot of time to visit the museum but definitely don't want to miss it. How much time is recommended to visit? Is it something we can get done it 2 hours or less? Thanks in advance!

There is a lot to see yes but so long as you do not try to read all the info on the exhibits you should be ok with 2 hrs

The No.19 or No.23 go quite close to the D-Day Museum. If you search online for "Portsmouth bus route map" you can see where they go. However the museum is currently closed for refurbishment, reopening March 2018.
