Really enjoyed this, our 2nd trip, on the SS Shieldhall Steam Ship. Loads of interesting history attached to this ship. The Selsey Shantymen (9 of them) entertained us with singalong sea shanties throughout the 3.5 hour trip. A feeling of excitement and awe at the sight of the big cruise ships around us .. much hooting and waving was enjoyed. The refreshments were first class and the service extremely efficient from the bar to the kitchen to the table! An amazing CREW looked after us from the moment we boarded to the moment we disembarked. Thank you all.

Lovely nostalgic trip on this interesting steamship. Lots to see on this vessel including the engine room and boiler room. You can even go up to the bridge! Nice tasty snacks, hot food and good choice of drinks available in the saloon. Great for solo, couples or families.

An amazing experience full of history and an amazing crew to guide you through your day. Great for children and adults with food, drinks and gifts to purchase. Could not fault it.

This was the highlight of our short break near Southampton!! We opted for the Selsey Shantymen cruise, a 3.5 hour trip around the Solent. We took a taxi, which dropped us of right by the ship. We boarded early, and got a great seat outside. Fortunately the weather was better than forecast. My husband was like a child in a sweet shop. I didn't see much of him, as he was off exploring all areas, including the bar for a quick rum or two! The volunteer staff were very friendly and informative and do a great job of keeping everything ship shape. The Shantymen were great and added to the happy atmosphere on board. All in all a super relaxing afternoon and the bonus for us, we won the raffle so will be back next year to do it all again! Many thanks to all.

It was an absolutely amazing trip out of Southampton, down past Osborne House and back! The views from the ship were wonderful. We were able to explore the whole ship, including the bridge and the engine room. All of the volunteers on board were kind, generous, and extremely knowledgeable. It was a real treat, one I hope to repeat soon!

Such a lovely and unusual thing to do! The ship is amazing - you must visit the engine room and the bridge - and all the staff were lovely and helpful. Good value snacks on board and just altogether a great afternoon out

This was a brilliant trip along Southampton Water and the Solent. The ship is, truly a living and working museum piece and a unique piece of our maritime heritage.
The ability to visit the working parts of the ship while she is underway at sea is truly a remarkable experience. SHIELDHALL provides non-seafarers with the opportunity to go behind the scenes into historic, but fully functional parts of the ship. Genuinely ‘privileged access’
Do not miss the chance of cruising on this ship which is crewed entirely by volunteers who were all friendly and very enthusiastic.

Really wonderful excursion. Not many chances left to experience a bit of British maritime history in action so this was great. Lots of interesting commentary and information from the very friendly volunteers. However, it's not just for enthusiasts. If you're not so interested in learning about the Shieldhall and the history of Southampton docks itself, (although you will soon be hooked) you will still have a great trip - beautiful sail up the Solent and back with some lovely refreshments (had some lovely rhubarb cider and later on a nice cuppa), and it was very exciting to see the cruise ships going off. Well worth the price, which of course nowadays has to take into account the rising fuel costs. Good, well-run free parking facilities. Looking forward to going ahead.

Loved our family visit there. Would definitely recommend it, especially to people interested/fascinated by shipping (you get to see massive cruise and cargo ships pass, some loud ship to ship communication as well), history (it's basically an interactive museum and boat tour), engineering (the engine room is an amazing visit, it's a working steam engine!). The staff/volunteers are nice and friendly, they're also happy to explain or give more details about parts of ship from the engineers in the engine room to the officers on the bridge. We also had 30s-50s singing on our trip with the Aphrodite singers, which made it a nice time-capsule.

From beginning to end, this experience is a must for any visitor to Southampton.
It is carefully planned and organised to maximise enjoyment.
The crew of volunteers are friendly, experienced and helpful - an initial greeting at the car park with clear directions on where to go.
The Engine and Boiler Rooms are a must - hot, oily and smelly but a real taste of steamship sailing.
The Bridge is interesting with so many instruments and a chance to see the complications of navigation.
On board refreshments are excellent with a choice of basic hot and cold food, beer, cider, wine and soft drinks.
There is always a place to sit and listen to the informative commentary (we are Southampton born and bred and we learnt lots !!!).
A chance to get up close and personal to any cruise ships entering or leaving harbour is exciting, especially when they sound a greeting.
The Log Book supplied to children keeps them occupied, collecting stamps and ticking off interesting items on board.
Altogether a wonderful experience and highly recommended.

Have a look on the Shieldhall website, this is a seasonal service, but there are some trips in early September.

can you take your own picnic on board?

Yes I think so. There is a restaurant on board with some very reasonable prices. However you can also sit on deck with a picnic. Really chilled...

Thank you for your comments, volunteering is not constrained by distance. On the trip you were on, in the crew we had one volunteer from Skye, two from Durham and one from Morecombe and several from London / Nth of the M4. Our Chairman is from Devon and we have other volunteers from the South West too. If you're interested in volunteering, and we need all sort of skills to essentially run business, not just maritime or engineering skills there's lots of information and contact details on our website.
Glad you enjoyed your trip - so did we! Definitely the best place to watch the airshow.

oops - you couldn't see which trip you were on when responding, mea culpa, however the comments are all still valid.
Hope to see you at the airshow next year if not before!!!

Hello Nigel, there are a number of places where can stay which is near the ship. The nearest is the Holiday Inn which is about a 10 minute walk to the ship.

On a Cruise last Weekend I also noticed a Wheelchair user in the Lounge/Dining area ,Enjoying Themselves as Well....There is plenty of room up front on the foredeck with Wooden Seating ,plenty of Legroom....All areas of the Ship are open such as Bridge,Upper Decks,Engine Room,Gift Shop etc ,But Steep Steps are involved to access any of these areas.....However the Crew are very Friendly ,Helpful & Accomodating and Will Willingly Help You if You ask them.
