We recently had the privilege of visiting the National Maritime Museum in London, an iconic institution renowned for its rich maritime history and captivating exhibitions. However, my experience was elevated to new heights during a special event where Chris, a knowledgeable guide, provided fascinating insights into the forgotten story of Tupaia, the star navigator who played a crucial role in James Cook's historic journey to Australia.
From the moment I entered the museum, I was enveloped in an atmosphere of intrigue and discovery. The museum's grand halls echoed with the footsteps of fellow enthusiasts, eager to explore the hidden gems of maritime history. Yet, it was the promise of uncovering the untold tale of Tupaia that truly ignited my curiosity.
Led by Chris, our group embarked on a journey through time, delving into the remarkable life and legacy of Tupaia. With eloquence and passion, Chris transported us to the 18th century, where Tupaia, a Polynesian high priest and master navigator, embarked on a voyage of unparalleled significance.
Through vivid storytelling and captivating anecdotes, Chris painted a vivid portrait of Tupaia's extraordinary abilities as a navigator and his pivotal role in bridging cultures during a time of exploration and discovery. From his mastery of celestial navigation to his invaluable contributions as a mediator between indigenous peoples and European explorers, Tupaia emerged as a central figure in the narrative of maritime exploration.
As we traversed the museum's galleries adorned with artifacts and exhibits, Chris skillfully wove together the threads of history, shedding light on Tupaia's interactions with James Cook and the profound impact of his knowledge and expertise on the course of history. Each artifact became a window into Tupaia's world, allowing us to glimpse the complexities of his legacy and the enduring significance of his contributions.
By the conclusion of our tour, I found myself profoundly moved by the story of Tupaia, a figure whose name had been unjustly consigned to the shadows of history. Through Chris's passionate narration and the museum's immersive exhibits, Tupaia's tale had been resurrected, offering a powerful testament to the resilience of human curiosity and the enduring bonds forged across oceans and cultures.
In retrospect, my visit to the National Maritime Museum was not merely a journey through time, but a testament to the transformative power of storytelling and the timeless relevance of forgotten narratives. Thanks to Chris and the museum's dedication to preserving maritime history, the legacy of Tupaia will continue to inspire and enlighten generations to come.

Our U3A group had two guided tours and learned a lot about Horatio Nelson. Ask Suzy to tell you about the little handmade sailing boat found on a remote tropical island and restored. The natives who created her from natural materials believe she has a soul. It's a very touching story.

I went with a group.. Despite some temporary difficulties with the building structure, the day was well organised and most informative. The system with a group of using headsets and a guide talking worked well even with some 25 of us. There was a great deal to see and guides were very knowledgeable.
Particularly good were Genevieve, Susie and Bob

Hi Jock
Thank you for visiting the National Maritime Museum - I was there when your group was visiting and am delighted to know that you found the tour so interesting. As you noted, we have begun a project to improve the roof of the museum, and so some areas of the site are unavailable until summer 2025 - but all of our larger permanent galleries remain open, which has allowed us to deliver a really wide-ranging tour of the museum.
We will pass on your compliments to Genevieve, Suzy and Bob, who will all be very pleased to know you enjoyed your visit, and we hope to welcome you back at the museum sometime over the spring/summer.

We saw a really captivating short talk about the King George V-class battleship delivered with humour, enthusiasm and expertise.
Chris of the National Maritime Museum explained the compromises that the ship designers needed to consider and the effectiveness of results in battle.
A very enjoyable part of our visit.

Hi Isaac
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your visit to the National Maritime Museum - we clearly float your boat!
Speaking of sea-going vessels, Chris's Gallery Favourite talk on the King George V model is one of our newest talks on offer from our amazing team, and having seen it in person myself, I can wholeheartedly agree with your comments - who knew that one could learn so much from just one ship model?
We hope to welcome you back again very soon - if you haven't already, do take the time to visit our new exhibition 'Women of the RNLI', which can be found in the Sammy Ofer Wing here at the museum and best of all, is entirely free to visit. See you soon!

It was really most interesting to visit National Maritime museum at Greenwich. One can visualise the entire history of Britain on sea. All the historical battle of Britain like war of Trafalgar etc has been shown in separate gallery. Invasion of South East Asia particularly India and role of East India company through its trade route has also been shown briefly in a decent manner. Several beautiful models of ships are also displayed there in. It is also having two cafes there. It is most surprising to note that admission to this beautiful museum is completely free of cost. It is highly recommended to visit this museum.

We took a 'highlights' tour with Suzy and really enjoyed it. Having someone point out specific items and tell us details about them definitely enhanced our experience. Suzy was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. We definitely recommend joining one of her tours and thank her for doing a great job.

It's great to hear from you, and fantastic to hear that you had such a nice time at the National Maritime Museum. Our Treasures Tour has been receiving lots of plaudits over recent months and it's wonderful to hear that you found Suzy's tour to be so informative and enjoyable.
You may have seen it during your visit, but if not, do come back again to visit our brand-new exhibition 'Women of the RNLI' - in addition to the exhibition being free, we also have some free talks on select days that bring out more of the stories behind the exhibition, and behind the history of the RNLI.
Hopefully we'll see you back again very soon!

Can one get a ride from the Cutty Sark to the Greenwich Observatory?

Hi Michael
Unfortunately there is no direct transport between Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory Greenwich. We estimate the walk to be between 15-20 minutes with the latter part of the walk being up the hill in Greenwich Park. We hope you enjoy your visit!

Can you leave a bag in the cloakroom at the NMM whilst you visit the Royal Observatory and Cutty Sark? Also, do cloakrooms need to be pre booked?

Bonjour,
Pouvez-vous me dire combien de salles sont consacrées à l'exposition sur les pirates et combien de temps il faut compter approximativement pour visiter cette exposition avec un grand groupe d'élèves ?
Merci.

I read about taking the catamaran from the London Bridge City Pier. What is the company called that does this and do you recommend the day trip? Any suggestions for lunch?

We did not use the catamaran service, so I am not able to advise on that one. Regarding food, we found the cafes in the museum itself very busy, and a bit untidy - possibly not enough staff on duty to continually clear peoples' left over mess! The food offerings were OK for snacks, but you will find a greater variety of cafes, pubs and restaurants to cater for your tastes in the centre of Greenwich (close to the river).

We live in Greater London and only come to Greenwich for day trips so we cannot help you with these two hotels. There have been many recent Tripadvisor reviews that should help you decide between these two places to stay.
Personally, whenever I visit a city, I try to book centrally so that I can easily visit several attractions without changing hotel.

There's a lovely little cafe inside the museum called the Brasserie - nice views and good food. Equally there are a few good gastropubs further along the river - the Trafalgar Tavern for example.

Can you walk between all the attractions in Greenwich or do you need to use transport?
Royal Museums Greenwich
London, UK
Our sites are all located in Greenwich, mainly spread around the park and it is possible to walk between each of them. The National Maritime Museum and Queen's House are next to each other with a minimal walk between. The Cutty Sark is located in the centre of Greenwich and the Royal Observatory is in the park up a fairly steep hill, but the walk between them is only around 15 minutes.
