Located along chaotic and noisy Euston Road in London, the British Library provides an oasis of peace, quiet, and calm.
The library usually has special exhibitions of one sort or another, but this time I simply poked around its permanent collection of old manuscripts. These items are absolutely stunning works of art. What a wonderful experience.
Free admission. Gift shop, coffee shop and washrooms.

We didn't intend visiting as we didn't even know it was here. But the architecture was so interesting and the courtyard so spacious and welcoming we were drawn in. We were on a walk so had no interest, this time, in investigating anything other than the shop - two enamelled mugs to use in the garden and save breakages - the loos (very modern and spacious) and then coffee and cake. And that's why I'm writing now. The almond croissant was the best I've ever had - substantial, moist, full of flavour - and the banana bread my husband chose equally so. We are so used to mediocre offerings we were astonished. And loads of space to sit and enjoy outside. Highly recommend.

A huge library right next to King's Cross station. We made a short visit to a small part of the library, but if you want you can choose guided tours for a more in-depth visit

A beautiful place to go and being Sunday so much quieter than a week day.
Some lovely interesting books on display showing world religions and their texts all beautiful in their own ways.
Interesing how easily prejudices are formed. When you actually look further i to the subject yiu can see how wrong your thoughts are.
The cafe was ooen. For cakes and coffee but notjing else was open so had to leave to go look for lunch

The British Library is one of the most important buildings in the entire British Isles, such is the invaluable role it plays in what is left of British society.
They, to quote them directly, "build, curate and preserve the nation's collection of published, written and digital content."
And what a collection it is. We made straight for their 'Treasures/Exhibitions' which are located on the first floor up, in The Sir John Ritblat Gallery and the PACCAR galleries - both of which are accessible through the same door.
In here we found a mind-boggling collection of treasures on display, including first, second, third and fourth folios by Shakespeare, a 9th Century French Bible beautifully illustrated, a 16th Century Bible belonging to none other than King Henry VIII himself, love poetry hand written by the great artist Michelangelo, hand written study notes by Leonardo Da Vinci, and the sheet music for Mozart's String Quartet in D Major written in his own hand.
This is but a sample of the amazing things to be found here. There is also a copy of the Magna Carta here, however that was inaccessible when we were there, however I shall most assuredly be coming back to again to see it.
The rest of the building is just as incredible in it's own way. With over 400 miles of shelving, it is easy to see why it's almost impossible not to find what you're looking for here.
The enormous amount of storage required for their vast collection is met via the aforementioned shelving mostly located in the four vast basements below the building. These are the deepest basements in the UK, reaching a whopping 24 metres below ground.
Readers/researchers can make use of one of the 1277 desks to be found in their reading rooms, or alternatively in the more relaxed environment of one of their 150 open working spaces.
It feels so airy and fresh in this building, which I suppose is not entirely surprising, given that it is a relatively modern building. Opened in November 1997, this building is the youngest building ever to acquire Grade 1 listed status by Historic England.
I had a terrific time here - from looking at what is effectively Da Vinci's homework, to studying their racks upon racks of banknotes and postage stamps in their philately section - and I cannot wait to return.
Returning is going to be no bind either, as it is located a stones throw away from St Pancras Station, which is where I enter and exit London.
If you've never been here before (like I hadn't), then I urge you to do so. It's hugely impressive, hugely important, and if nothing else, it's free.

Cannot believe this was my first visit to this library. Wonderful building with do much going on inside. Apart from using it as a library, there are also exhibitions and other events. Saw Beyond the Bassline which was a comprehensive dive into the last 500 years of black music. Will definitely return for a longer look around.

The Magna Carta room was closed during our visit, limiting the collection you could view. While interesting even only seeing that, it’s essentially one room of literary artifacts … there’s SO much to do in London, I might consider skipping this stop in favor of something else. That said, they had things organized in an interesting way.
Highlights include handwritten Beatles lyrics, a bunch of old iterations of the Bible, a homework tablet from like 2 AD from Egypt, some Michelangelo and Da Vinci writings, a Canterbury Tales from like 1410. Other stuff too of course, but those were a few high profile ones! A huge exhibit of like stamps from every country and time period pretty much. I’m just not sure it warrants a spot on the itinerary if you’re only in the city for a few days.

It lacks the beautiful architecture of most London museums, but the contents are intriguing. We joined the "Treasures of the British Library" tour which involves a fee but is well worth it. It includes a tour of the library itself but focuses on the Treasures room with the most significant holdings. We especially enjoyed the Bibles (including a Gutenberg Bible) and the stories that explain the effort to get them printed in the English language as well as some of the early Shakepeare folios.

Wow! Books over a thousand years old! Handwritten music by Handel and Mozart! A Gutenberg Bible! 1500 year old handwritten texts well preserved! My family spent 2.5 hours just in the treasure room! My little kids enjoyed it well too.

We love the British Library. Our 2nd visit there. So interesting to see the collection with everything from The Beatles handwritten lyrics to early Bibles and more. Beautiful building also. Anyone interested in history and reading would love it here. Very good bookshop and gift shop also.

Is the handwritten manuscript of Persuasion by Jane Austen still on display at the British Library? My sister and I are visiting in May and would love to see it.

It was on display when I visited in August 2019. Email the library & ask them, they are most helpful & with prompt replies to any questions I’ve asked them.

Is there anything to see from Night at the Museum 3 in this museum where it was partly filmed?

Sorry, haven't seen the film so I cannot help. I suggest ringing the Library - the staff are extremely helpful.

How long would you recommend spending in the Treasures Gallery?
Đã viết vào 4 tháng 6, 2019
Around1.5-2 hours should do it. Depends if you want to read and interact with everything. It’s a bit like - How long is a piece of string.

Portsmout - I haven't been on one, but looked this up on a search engine, "DuckDuckGo" which came straight up with the website of the British Library and it's tours.
They are only done in certain months of the year and usually on most days of the week, but not every day from when I clicked on the booking button, Tuesday was missing.
It's £10 for the tour and if under 18 years old, £8.
When I went to the British Library, I wanted to look up the microfiche of old British newspapers - I wasn't allowed in as I had no ID on me, they wouldn't let me in without, so if you have a driving licence or passport take these, with a bank statement, or council tax bill as well. They insisted on me having 2 forms of ID - so I never got any further in, which I was really annoyed about.

I would like to visit the British Library; are you able to do a self-guided tour and see the Magna Carta, etc., or is that solely through the guided tours? Thank you!
