Absolutely pathetic, asked for a refund and got my money back no questions asked and here's why.. I can not believe what a poor experience it was visiting this once great attraction. Having friends visiting us at the weekend I thought what better way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon than showing our guest's around the castle and enjoy all the history surrounding it, so I went online and booked 4 adult tickets costing around £47. We got to the castle and eventually found out where to present my bar code and get my receipt, THAT I'm afraid is where the excitement ended.. we went up and walked around the castle walls looking out over Nottingham then went to get in to the castle.. Oh my god it's awful! Where's all the old charm and character gone? It's like wandering around a cheap hotel with its flat modern painted walls, the few exhibits that ARE on show, and different sections of the "castle" are poorly signposted, not that there's much to look at once you do find them, and the stained glass windows made of fabric, what's that all about? We walked in to one section and I said out loud "ooh it looks like there's some kind of jumble sale on" turns out it's "designer" Paul Smith's exhibition lol I've never seen such a load of cheap looking tat in my life, and IF Nottingham Castle want to celebrate the history of Nottingham, what about telling people about Raleigh, one of the world's oldest and best known bike brands Established in 1887 and employing local people in Nottingham! Or the players factory manufacturing tobacco and employing local people since 1877 in Nottingham! folk were just wandering straight past the Paul Smith display like it wasn't even there.. I was feeling bad for our guest's who had made the journey down from Leeds for this, the place is laughable, so I started to ask people in there what they thought, and I am not joking, everyone of the people I asked were absolutely disgusted with the place, there were people wandering around shrugging their shoulders as if to say "is this it" I was totally embarrassed to be local. So, when we walked out of the "castle" and back through the little ticket shop, I asked at the counter to speak to someone in charge AND for a refund, explaining that I'd paid to see Nottingham castle but instead felt like we had walked around a cheap hotel for twenty minutes. My request for a refund was not even challenged!! in fact the look on that young ladies face and the ease and speed at which I received my refund told me that she was used to it and there had been many before me also asking for their money back. So, you can either pay to look around this shambles or throw your hard earned money in the bin, the outcome will be exactly the same.

Visited the Castle yesterday - was very disappointed. The entrance is tucked well away from the payment point and shop and is not impressive at all. The whole place lacks signage and Im assuming the wooden post structures were expensive and im our opinion useless and unnecessary. We had gone mainly to see the Paul Smith Exhibition and had been given directions my the shop staff. Again the signage was lacking and when we arrived at the exhibition there was a large group of school children everywhere and they are extremely noisy. Nobody from the school party appeared to be wearing mask - thankfully after not too long they left. We then arrived at a video point to listen to Paul Smith, only to have two 'staff' members talking extremely loudly close to this video area and were louder than the video sound. After they left it was a very pleasant wonder round the exhibition. We then went to the cafe for Coffee and Cake, The coffee is over priced and the cake selection and appearance was not appealing. We just had a coffee and went elsewhere for cake.
We then went to the next floor and the exhibition there was very good, Nottingham Pottery which Id never seen or heard of before even having lived in Nottingham all my life. Then the lace display and painting were ok. Signage for the toilets was poor and the only way we found them was because I thought id seen a sign on the way in.
We didn't go into the Robin Hood Experience and im still not sure if that is an extra cost or included as the website is not very helpful at finding out prices.
Im disappointed in the pricing - having born and lived in Nottinghamshire all my life we don't get a discount, but if I had a Nottingham postcode you get a discount. I'm sure part of our rates go to the City but thats another subject.
Overalll not a good experience and I can honestly say it was a better experience before they spent however many millions doing the place up. Think is has been poorly thought out from a visitors point of view. Also.. Lots of attractions allow you to visit again within the year for free or at a discount - not here.
The best bit was the Paul Smith experience and the Nottingham Pottery display
Would I rush back - NO

Sadly nothing compared to my teenage visit 30 years ago. Walked through the shop entrance to the castle grounds & was jumped on by security for having a vape, nowhere even outside are you allowed to smoke or vape (pathetic)
Brand new kids play park was the highlight of the visit (just looking at it)
We did the weird Robin Hood experience didn't know what to expect because it's not explained on the websites, it was for kids - electronic interactive games, pretty good but not for adults (free atm but would not have been impressed if I had paid)
Seriously overpriced cafe (over £6 for a small bowl of tomato soup)
I wanted to come back here to see the extensive collection of medieval weapons & armour (nothing here anymore!) most of the galleries were from the 60s & other unrelated periods of history, very disappointing visit I will never come back again!

Having seen Robin Hood scale the battlements of Nottingham Castle to duel with the Sheriff of Nottingham in so many films I probably came with some pre-conceived ideas about what to find at Nottingham Castle. How disappointed I was. Yes, the site is impressive but no, the castle no longer exists.
The Ducal Palace which replaced the castle after it was torn down post civil war is, by it's 17th century exterior, impressive. But enter and one could be in any 21st century gallery; dull, corporate and bland. No essense of the building's origins have been spared.
I understand the refurbishment cost £31 million so at least the building's structure is secured for the decades to come but inside is a depressing "shopping centre".
The current exhibits suffer from the same malaise: Paul Smith (who to be honest I've never heard of, but understand he's from Nottingham and something of a local hero so hurrah for him) and Rebellion which I believe was something to do with civil dissent in Nottingham but was too dark and disperate to make sense of.
And that seemed to be it.
Apparently, I was later told, there was a gallery and an exhibit on Nottingham lace but I didn't find them due to the blandness (and poor signage) of the building's interior.
The Caves were closed.
The Robin Hood exhibit was also closed even though it was included in the ticket (as were the caves) but from what I glimpsed seemed to be only video screens which might appeal to children and the easily distracted.
The grounds closed at 4.00pm not 6.00pm as stated on this site.
So I came away deeply unimpressed and underwhelmed. I had learned very little about the history of Nottingham, it's castle or indeed Robin Hood. When my wife told me how much the tickets were I felt compelled to ask for a refund, which, to the manager's credit, he accepted.
It's not a bad place and I'm sure someone will glean some positive things from it but I got the distinct impression that that £31 million pounds needed to be clawed back. But to do that my verdict must be; could do better!

Great morning out visiting the castle. A wonderful fortress play area which my youngest loved, the views from the castle are great. The galleries are greatly enjoyed by my teenager who is into art. Some interesting facts and opportunities for learning.
The robin hood experience through the tunnel was very good and both children really enjoyed this but you are limited on time (50mins) and it's not long enough 25 mins watching a film which is interesting interesting and informative, then 25mins with the interactive games. My son loved the archery game but its not long enough to do everything in there as there are table top activities too which we never got to.
The cafe was clean, service was slow but coffee was good. We really enjoyed ourselves over all.

An interesting and informative trip with the history of Nottingham Castle, art and design exhibitions and an interactive area, shop full of local produce and crafts plus two cafes, one with views over the city. Although it’s no longer a castle as such and the price may put locals off (hopefully a locals’ pass might be forthcoming of enough folk rally for one) it’s well within a visit. Just don’t expect a traditional castle. Shop staff friendly and you can enter that and the cafe behind for free. Families with slightly older children and couples will enjoy the most.

We were up sold the caves whilst paying for our tickets. We thought it sounded great as we have been to similar attractions elsewhere. What they forgot to tell us was that the majority of tunnel / cave area was under refurbishment so essentially, we paid extra for a staircase and two chambers. Interesting? Yes. Worth extra money? Absolutely not.

The Robin Hood exhibit was fine, if not rushed. Groups were taken through in a conveyor belt fashion.

The tour guide Corey was very entertaining, however. Engaging and funny.

I was really disappointed with our visit here today. There isn’t really anything for younger children other than the adventure playground, which is lovely, but you expect more than that to engage under 5’s for almost £40 entry for a family. The Robin Hood experience is basically just a bunch of screens that you get 25 minutes to look at. The staff bother you all the time that you are in there, standing over your shoulder and hurrying you into other parts of the exhibition. This meant that one of my children didn’t even get a go on the interactive games which were underwhelming at best. Signage is quite poor too. I had reasonable expectations based on the length of time and investment made in the refurbishment of the castle, sadly these were not met.

Very disappointed, not a castle, its a art gallery. If your expecting to see rooms reflecting a castle you will be sorely disappointed. Paid an extra £5 for the cave tour, which consisted of 2 cellars down some steps!!! Couldn't believe when the young chap said the tour was over, nothing to see, took 10 minutes at most, rip off. Did book a slot at the robin hood section, which consisted of 3 types of interactive games and a video history of the castle, strict 1/2 hour visit, can imagine if busy, you wouldnt have a chance to play.
Advise to give a miss, not worth it.
