I've been going to and enjoying Merthyr Mawr since I passed my driving test back in 1978.
Visitors beware - as with all sand dunes, there is sand. You may experience some sand contamination of your clothes and shoes and maybe your car.
Used to take my sons there as they were growing up.. endless fun with a sledge coming down the dunes and they also have nothing but fond memories of MM.
I see some comments here about it being a gay cruising / dogging area - that's news to me. I have never seen / encountered anything in 45 years of visiting... and I'm sure I have walked every single path right down to Ogmore Beach.
Parking is now aggressively controlled by NPRC's. It's expensive, and extortionate for failure to comply / overstaying - but that's just like everything else in Wales. Enjoy it before the Tourism Tax is imposed!

These are very extensive sand dunes and a rare ecosystem. They extend inland a couple of miles. Some of the dunes are bordering on hills. The sand sledging if the sand conditions are right, not too dry or too wet. A small knights castle at Candleston. Its a hard walk across to Newton sands but worth it.

Lovely place with ruins of candleston Castle, sand dunes where they filmed some of Lawrence of Arabia. U can sleigh down the dunes kids love it

Amazing walks and beautiful scenery. The car park could definitely do with being a bit cheaper though. Whilst not as expensive as Ogmore by Sea costal car park, its still not great

It was a hot day so the walk was a little hard but it was worth it. Because of other reviews I was careful about the car park but it actually gave me a ticket saying it was free for one day. There were plenty of markers to the beach but somehow we got a bit lost coming back. There was hardly any litter and it was peaceful.

My partner and I decided to take our young son to Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes. We paid for car parking and set off on our journey to the beach. There were some lovely walks with great views, including a walk along the sand dunes to a beautiful sandy beach. The beach was clean and spacious, but a little secluded. We felt safe because there were lots of people around. The beach would make a great picnic spot in the warmer months. Whilst at the beach we got talking to a local man who told us about the pretty village of Merthyr Mawr (lots of chocolate box cottages), the history of the medieval church and Candleston Castle. He also explained that there are a number of walks and in the summer we are planning to bring a picnic and to walk along the river across the stepping stones to Ogmore Castle. This is a great place for families seeking a cheap day out.

The car park is a joke. We went there to take the dogs for a walk and didn't see any signs to pay for the car parking . If we had seen them we would have paid . I have now received a fine of £60 !!! which is extortionate , they have a camera that photos your car when you go in and when you leave. The car park is not clearly marked and the fee is completely un justified.

Paid for 2 hours car parking, even displayed the receipt in the window. Overstayed by half an hour as I got lost on my way back, (no marked paths through the dunes). Got a letter with a £ 100 !!! fine in the mail today. Unbelievable that Merthyr Mawr estate or Bridgend County council employ companies like Local Parking Security LTD that are clearly designed to rip people off in a place of recreation! The fine money will obviously not end up supporting nature reservation but with a dodgy company. 👎👎👎 The dunes are great of course, but this carelessness of the ppl running the reserve absolutely spoiled it for me!

Car parking was not clearly marked, there are number plate recognition cameras on the way in and out a 3min stay can cost you £100.

This is a tremendous place to visit. The dunes are a bit high but the place is beautiful. The beach is very quiet as hard to reach. The local village are is really pretty.

Are these driving/vehicle (4x4) or foot/walking dunes?
Might sound crazy question, but my experience of sandunes are off roading, whilst so far most things I've seen in Wales are for walking purposes.

No Merthyr Mawr sand dunes backs onto Newton beach which does have lifeguards. keep away from the river estuary especially when the tides going out. Newton beach is more for water activities swimming is better around the headland at Trecco bay or Coney Beach. remember the South Wales coastline is the second highest tidal fall in the world. Swim safe.
