This is quite a beautiful tribute on busy cross roads in the centre of Edinburgh. There is a dedicatory inscription on two bronze plaques placed on two sides of the tower.

If you are like myself you are going to ask what the Heart of Midlothian is? It's a football club commonly known as Hearts. Hearts, the oldest and most successful football club in the Scottish capital, was formed in 1874, its name influenced by Walter Scott's novel The Heart of Midlothian.

In November 1914, Heart of Midlothian comfortably led the First Division, having started the 1914–15 season with eight straight victories, including a 2–0 defeat of reigning champions Celtic.

This streak coincided with the start of the First World War and the beginnings of a public debate upon the morality of continuing professional football while young soldiers were dying on the front-line. Military training was thus added to the Hearts players football training regime. The war claimed the lives of seven first team players: Duncan Currie, John Allan, James Boyd, Tom Gracie, Ernest Ellis, James Speedie and Harry Wattie as well as former player David Philip.

As you leave Haymarket Railway Station you will notice it in the distance on the intersection and if you want to make your way to it, you will have to use a couple of crossings. It's actually a bit of a statement piece where it is. A lovely reminder of men from the football club that lost their lives in WWI.

Stone clock tower with metal dedicatory plaques on busy cross roads in the centre of Edinburgh. A memorial to the players of the local sports team who died in World War I. Based on a sculptural base, the clock greets many visitors arriving in Edinburgh via Haymarket station.
