It’s an important monument no doubt. But hardly worth €4. Other similarly priced monuments offer much more and are worth their price and more.

The Synagogue of Saint Mary the White is a beautiful synagogue/church in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Toledo. It is known for its stunning white and gold arches. It is one of the only old synagogues left in Spain and it is definitely worth seeing!

Me esparaba otra cosa

We visited the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca whilst in Toledo and its located in the Jewish Quarter. There is a nominal entrance fee.

It is a museum and former synagogue dating back to around the late twelfth to early thirteenth century.

It is considered the oldest synagogue building in Europe still standing and was converted to a Catholic church in the early 15th century.

Worth visiting but the interior is not furnished so quite sparse.

There is a €3 entrance fee (free entry with the Toledo Tourist bracelet which, at €12, offers decent value). Expect the synagogue to be quite crowded with groups. Don’t confuse Santa Maria la Blanca (originally known as the Ibn Shoshan Synagogue) with the Samuel Halevi Abulafia Synagogue (now known as El Transito). Whilst they are the only medieval synagogues left in the city (there used to be 11), these two synagogues are very different.

This is thought to be the oldest surviving synagogue in Europe. It was constructed soil in 1180, paid for by a local Jewish tax collector and designed by Moorish architects in the Mudejar style. Toledo had been recaptured by the Spanish in 1085 and it became the most important political and social centre of Castile. At this time, Christians, Arabs, and Jews lived in relative harmony. The whitewashed octagonal brick pillars are original - unusually for the period, they were purpose-built rather than being recycled from the ruins of earlier buildings. The pillars support beautiful Nasrid style horseshoe arches and an ornate Mudejar ceiling. You can still see lots of Moorish decorations - polychrome stucco-work, medallions full of ornate vegetal and geometrical designs, and wall friezes with both Arabic and Hebrew inscriptions. Around 1405, the synagogue was reconsecrated as a Christian church and renamed Santa Maria la Blanca. Many of its Jewish features were destroyed, including the Ark containing its sacred Torah rolls and the bimah platform from the Torah was unrolled and read to the congregation. In the centre of the eastern wall, the Ark was replaced by the gilded main altar and two decorated scallop-domed side altars were added, one of which remained unfinished. During the Napoleonic Wars, the building served as a military barracks, and then a warehouse. Some aspects remain a mystery – why there is no women’s gallery; how the building was original illuminated (the small bulls eye windows are a recent addition); and why the building was shortened.

(In case you are interested, the larger El Transito was built more than a century later, in 1357. It has a more complex history and is more sumptuously decorated, retaining many more of Jewish characteristics, such as the women’s gallery. It now an interesting museum which highlights the Hispano-Jewish history and legacy.)

ambiente completamente vuoto e senza alcuna spiegazione. Anche se il biglietto di ingresso è solo di 4 euro non vale la pena visitarla in quanto oltre le colonne ed i muri bianchi non c'è nulla.
