Given Gibraltar’s position not only between two continents but also straddling two major seas, it’s not surprising that it has been occupied for tens of thousands of years.
This longevity is well reflected in this very good museum. It has a section on Neanderthals and our other prehistoric ancestors.
Remains of a Moorish bathhouse that was built during the 1300s is another excellent picture of life during the many centuries.
With the Great Siege being such a major event in its history a room is dedicated to those terrible four years under attack. A cogent display here is an iron furnace that was used to heat the iron shots to red-hot before firing them towards the enemy.
An anchor that looks like it’s of stone is actually a lead one from Roman times that was found in 1957. A great artefact.

Really well put together museum. Small enough to see everything but big enough to have learned a thing or two. Great staff and some good exhibits.
We had been a few years ago and recently went back so didn't see much change but was still a good place to go for the history buff.

Until recently £5 entry, now bumped up to £15. Nothing has changed for a few years and I think this is too high for an hour min visit, longer if you're keen. The old underground baths are the best bit, the rest a bit meh.. We were the only ones there. Price and out of the way I guess.

The museum houses some of the artefacts found at the Gorhams UNESCO cave complex at Europa Advance Road. There are also the Moorish baths that have been restored.
The history of Gibraltar back to Neanderthal man is superbly documented in this museum.

Never visited here on our many holidays-in fact we didn’t know it existed!
Really need higher profile marketing as WAY too quiet!
Just behind Main Street, this is a great visit.
Cannot take photos there, and do not want to spoil the surprises, so please visit and be amazed at the range of contents/artefacts.
There is a small garden area for a little rest, but could do with more inside seats as parts have many steep steps so a rest needed-or for me -I waited on the stairs whilst the rest continued exploring.
Def needs to be seen!

A very unique museum in a unique setting. Archeological setting with three different “ages”/ systems of harnessing water for community bath house and water distribution.
Neanderthal people and artifacts. Wonderful signage for reading details of the expositions. I came away knowing a good deal more about Gibraltar than I had.

It was £15 entrance each but this gets you a free visit to the Natural History Museum as well. Given that the Natural History Museum is at Rosia Bay, we didn't make it there however so not much of a bargain.
However, the museum has a range of interesting artefacts including an Egyptian mummy that washed up en route from Egypt to the UK, lots of militaria and the restored Moorish baths. There's some old Pathe films showing Gib in bygone days and military exercises which you can sit and watch whilst also watching the live nest cams showing the swifts nesting above you in the roof!
An interesting place to spend 1-2 hours just of the High Street. You're not allowed to take photos so I can't add any here.

This is probably a wonderful museum and had I had been looking forward to spending a morning there. Unfortunately I didn't get further than Reception.
It is a lovely building just off Main Street that can take a little finding if you take the wrong side street. I have issues with my hips which mean I have a limp and have difficulties with steps and stairs. In every day life I do not use a stick and as long as there is a hand rail I can get up and down stairs if a lift is not available. When I am away from home I use a walking pole and this enables me to deal with unexpected single steps and slopes especially when I am travelling solo. Though I avoid multiple steps with no hand rail and normally there is an alternative route.
To give the Receptionist credit she did mention the steps when I arrived. I asked if there were hand rails. Which would have meant with my stick as well I would not have had any problem getting round. This question seemed to cause some confusion She said the that there were steep steps to the basement and suggested I take a look. I asked if they could be avoided. Again more confusion. I had visions of ending my holiday stuck in a museum or in hospital so decided to save myself £15 and go and do some last minute present shopping in Main Street instead.
It is a shame that a museum such as this does not seem to have made any attempt to ensure that people who have issue with steps are able to access the building. As a member of English Heritage I have managed to visit various historic ruins where handrails have been put in, more solid steps put in, alternative routes suggested and recommendations to where to sit and listen to the audio tour for upper rooms that those with mobility issues will not be able to access have been provided.

If this was the £5 is was last year (according to reviews) it would have been worth it, but £15 was too steep.
The collection is interesting, although eclectic and arranged in a slightly strange order so we ended up having to piece together what is actually a really fascinating history, rather than this being clear. Felt like a missed opportunity to celebrate this unique place.

This surprised us. There is a lot to see. The Muslim baths are amazing as is the well excavation in the garden. The rest of the rooms are full of history and the parts on the Gotham cave complex and nethanderals are very well presented.
A real highlight for us.

There are Neanderthal exhibits which will be expanded very soon as they are currently under refurbishment (new galleries opening May 2016). More artifacts and interpretation of the nominated World Heritage Site known as the 'Gibraltar Neanderthal Caves and Environments' will soon be featured. Hope that helps!
