After a tour through the neighborhood and in the adjacent park I could not miss this magnificent basilica with early Christian origins, which combines interesting architectural forms with a first-rate historical and artistic heritage.
Its importance has also been consolidated throughout the many centuries of its existence and it is certainly no coincidence that the archbishops of Milan, as soon as appointed, celebrate their installation in this basilica. The interior with three naves, although a little 'in the dim light, houses works of art of great value, as well as remarkable historical evidence. There are many things to see, but this time I focused in particular on the wonderful altarpiece of the Passion - which dominates the high altar and is already worth the visit alone - wonderful marble polyptych dating back to the last years of the fourteenth century and commonly attributed to Jacopino da Tradate. If the dim light had not obscured it almost completely I would have gladly admired the beautiful thirteenth-century Crucifix, hanging on the nave and good-naturedly renamed "el Signur de la féver" (= the Lord of fever). The other paintings and sculptures deserve the same attention, in particular the frescoes and the various bas-reliefs, while the area with the ark of the Three Kings arouses interest and a certain suggestion. Outside the bell tower is intrigued, not only by the typical basket cone, but because at the top there is not the cross but a star: the one that guided the Three Kings.
A special mention deserves the famous and precious Portinari Chapel (opening at 10 am with entrance fee), an authentic fifteenth-century masterpiece by Guiniforte Solari and Filarete, with the ark carved by Giovanni di Balduccio and frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa.
But, as can be seen from what has been said so far and from my previous reviews, the basilica itself is well worth a visit.

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is not among the most famous destinations for those visiting Milan or for those who superficially frequent it, but it deserves to be counted among its religious buildings richest in history and interest. It dates back to the early Christian age and has always been known to house some relics of the Three Kings, still partially kept in the chapel dedicated to them.
The interior, austere and solemn, not very illuminated (frequent feature for Milanese churches), houses many other works of art: the refined Ancona della Passione at the high altar, the tomb of Stefano and Valentina Visconti in the side chapel dedicated to the gentlemen of Milan, numerous frescoes, without however lessening the suggestive sobriety of the environment. A place of its own occupies the famous Portinari Chapel, which can be visited separately and for a fee: in my case I preferred to avoid and maybe postpone to other occasions (I confess that I am a bit fed up with paid admissions in the areas pertaining to the churches), but also "just" the visit of the central body left me an excellent impression.
An experience in Sant'Eustorgio, then, in my opinion should definitely not disregard a not rushed view of the outside. I am not referring so much to the facade, dignified redone in style in the nineteenth century and similar to that of many other Lombard churches, but to the views that can be had from the basilica from the sides and the back (from Via Santa Croce and the Parco delle Basiliche), which allow you to appreciate the richness of the architectural forms of the complex. Those who want to reach the basilica by metro can now count on the new Vetra station on the M4 line, to which a stretch of walking in the park can be added using the slender bell tower as a landmark.

Yesterday morning I walked past this basilica (which is the third mother church of the Diocese of Milan, after the Duomo and Sant'Ambrogio: when a new Archbishop officially takes possession of the Diocese after his appointment, he enters this church first).
Unfortunately a religious service was taking place and sightseeing was not allowed.
Too bad, I had to limit myself to admiring the Romanesque facade of the basilica, in which there is the stone sarcophagus that contained the remains of the Three Kings, brought to Milan, then capital of the Western Roman Empire, in 344 and remained here until 1162, when, after the destruction of the city by Barbarossa, they were stolen and brought to Cologne; only in 1903 was a very small part of the relics brought back to this basilica, where they are still found.
A curiosity: the bell tower is not topped by the classic cross, but by the eight-pointed star of the Three Kings.
It is an absolutely unmissable stop in Milan!

The early Christian basilicas of Milan are the first Christian churches built in the city starting in 313, immediately after Constantine's Edict of Milan, which admitted Christianity among the religions practiced in the Roman Empire. Most were built in the late Roman Empire during the period in which the Roman city of Mediolanum (modern Milan) was the capital of the Western Roman Empire (a role it held from 286 to 402).
Saint Eustorgio was a bishop of Milan in the 4th century, His legendary Life has it that Eustorgio, of Greek origins, was sent to Milan by the emperor as governor of the city. Upon the death of Protaso, as would later happen for Saint Ambrose, unanimously chosen as the new bishop of the city. The elected bishop then went to Constantinople, together with the Milanese notables, to communicate his choice to the emperor and obtain confirmation, which he achieved without difficulty. On this occasion, the emperor gave Eustorgio a marble ark with the relics of the Three Wise Men, which the bishop transferred to Milan and placed in the basilica he had built, today's Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio.
Inside the Basilica you can see two masterpieces: the painting made by Camillo Procaccini (1561-1629) depichting the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist and the wonderful polyptych of the Passion, on the main altar

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is one of the oldest churches in Milan. The style is early Christian and Romanesque and represents a place where legend and reality tend to merge, as it is the place where the relics of the three kings are. Simple interior with three naves with fragments of frescoes still visible.

The basilica was probably founded around 344. The current church can be dated to the 12th century and has undergone several rebuildings. Of interest is the altarpiece, which is a masterpiece from the 14th century. Many chapels with fine furnishings.

After taking care of some things this morning I went for a short visit to the ancient basilica of Sant'Eustorgio, to which so much history and legends are linked.
The pearl is certainly the Portinari Chapel (admission fee), but the entire church is full of works of art and other valuable artefacts. Dominating the central nave, for example, stands the thirteenth-century Crucifix, renamed by the people "el Signur de la féver" (= the Lord of the fever). While on the main altar the wonderful Ancona della Passione stands out, a stupendous marble polyptych from the late 14th century attributed to Jacopino da Tradate. The ark of the Magi and the many works scattered in the side chapels and between the naves cannot be missed.
Among the curiosities I point out the house located to the right of the basilica, where the first baptismal font opened in Milan in the apostolic era is preserved, blessed by Cardinal Federico Borromeo exactly four centuries ago, on 28 October 1623.
This basilica is also one of those unmissable destinations when visiting the city.

Yesterday I revisited this church which is the third mother church of the Diocese of Milan, after the Duomo and Sant'Ambrogio; in fact a new Archbishop of Milan, upon his entry into the city after his appointment, is the first to enter this church.
Here is the sarcophagus which contained the remains of the Three Wise Men, brought to Milan in 344 (then capital of the Western Roman Empire) and remained here until the destruction of the city by Barbarossa in 1162, when they were stolen and taken in Cologne; only in 1903 a very small part of the relics was brought back to this basilica.
The Portinari Chapel is extremely interesting, in Renaissance style and containing the stupendous burial of St. Peter the Martyr, a Dominican friar who was head of the Lombard Inquisition in the 13th century and killed by a hitman hired by heretics in 1252.
The Saint is also remembered by a column in front of the church which has his statue on top and by the external pulpit from which he preached.
The story of the hitman is curious: struck by the words of forgiveness pronounced on the point of death by the Saint and regretting his act, he became a Dominican lay brother and lived in the convent of Forlì for forty years in prayer and repentance, he died in the odor of sanctity and in the nineteenth century he was proclaimed Blessed.
Another curiosity: the bell tower is not surmounted by the classic cross, but by the eight-pointed star of the Three Kings.

The Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio is one of the oldest and most important churches in Milan, located in the square near Porta Ticinese. The painted Crucifix, located above the presbytery, is notable. The Portinari chapel is absolutely worth visiting. Nice area of Milan, easily reachable by tram.

La basilica e il museo sono aperti tutti i giorni dalle 10 alle 18. Per visitare il museo è necessario pagare un biglietto, che per gli adulti costa 6 euro. Buona visita
