This area is a square (actually a round circle) with cafe's and shops. It was once a Roman amphitheater where gladiator shows took place and later fortified. You enter through quaint arches and are encircled by shops, cafes and other buildings. I found it picturesque.

Architettonicamente pazzesca.

We love Lucca, and this was our second trip to visit a beautiful place full of history, music and great architecture. We traveled all across the world to make this trip, listened to Puccini's operas, learned about Italian history and architecture. This was our 9th trip to Italy where we love to come for its uniqueness, history and beauty.
We come and what do we find ... a huge obnoxious promotional tent that takes up an entire plaza, so high that it is impossible to even see the other side of the plaza. A tent from one of the American companies, looking so obnoxious and foreign in this beautiful piazza. Similar huge tents from other international promoters (mostly American) were blocking famous churches, piazzas and views all across Lucca. Please understand the irony of the situation... we take a long expensive journey halfway across the world to see a different culture, architecture and connect to different traditions just to see a pretty tasteless huge advertisement for the culture we tried to escape on our vacation. Honestly, it felt like the soul of the city was deliberately desecrated by our times and popular "culture" (the parenthesis is intentional).
I understand that Comic-Con was an event many local people looked forward to, provably and event that made a city of Lucca quite a bit of money. But for the tourists like me, who return to the place once visited and loved for its history and culture it felt almost like the soul of the place was sold for money to the crowd who did not appreciate its treasures. Honestly, this tent could have been anywhere in the city, outside of the walls even better. But if it needed to be there for the event it should have been designed in the way that does not block the entire piazza and fits better with the character of the place. Several smaller tents in styles or colors that are harmonious with the architecture could have been an acceptable compromise. Restrictions on the height and the size are sorely needed in places like that - this could be a healthy compromise that will help the city to make some money, young people have their fun, promoters get their word out, but would not be such a fat spit in the face of the people who come to visit Lucca for what it is known - tradition, culture, history and architecture.
I hope the city officials understand that presenting the city in this way can spoil its reputation for many years to come and to many people who come with their hearts and wallets open to experience Lucca for the first and only time in their lives. I also hope the city official understand that tourists who want to learn about Italian culture should not be ignored, and there are young Italians who should feel that their Italian culture is just as important if not more important than a half-baked low quality Hollywood production. Comic-Con is an event that is usually held in some modern huge convention center - why was there a need to use historical landmarks for that? To me a Russian born American, who visited Italy 9 times, tried to learn Italian, and has many beloved places in this beautiful country it felt like Italians were ready to sell its culture, traditions and history for cheap and flashy trinkets. These are harsh words I would not apologize for. Italians have a lot to be proud of, much of which they seem to take for granted. If it takes a strange foreigner to say those harsh words - so be it.
I wish Lucca finds a good compromise for hosting events such as Comic-Con, the one that is more befitting this beautiful city full of tradition that people yearn to come to see from all over the world.

Porta Elisa? Porta Santa Maria? où autres???
Merci

Hi will be travelling to Lucca in May for five nights. What is the best way to travel from Pisa Airport to Lucca. What are the 'must dos' and can I travel by train to surrounding cities of interest without to much fuss.

Hi, I hope I am not too late with this. We travelled by car so cannot comment on the public transport other than to say that I know others who have used trains without problems. The main Piazza are both worth a visit, as is the Cathedral where you will see the Santa Croce.

Will be in Lucca for a few hours in about a month. What are suggestions fro NON TOURIST places to eat and grab a drink and maybe shop a little and what is a MUST see?

Hi, thank you for asking the questions. I can only give you what my wife and I enjoyed, having stayed in Lucca for one whole month. First of all, Best non-tourist place to eat is outside the ancient walls. Catch a taxi or bus to the San Marco area east of the city (I think it's the Red bus line to S.Vito), a couple of miles up the road. A quaint little restaurant called Ristorante MORENO. Lunchtime special (weekdays only) is 2 courses, wine, water, bread and coffee for ten euros each. Great value, you won't get better anywhere else. Inside the city walls best value is Bar Martini. Since you have only a 'few' hours, best to bike around on top of the walls (you'll see), go into the Amfitheatre and visit Piazza Napoleone for a drink. Hope this helps. Personally, I don't think it is enough time to really check it out, and absorb the energy of antiquity this wondrous ancient city has to offer. Good luck.
