We bought our tickets directly on the departure pier. It says on the website that the "in navigation" ticket office is always active.

It's definitely worth it - especially with kids - and you might find yourself going there several times. Start with Castiglione del Lago on the western side of the lake. Skip the central town and drive along the lakefront which has ample parking and plenty of shade. There's plenty of lake access. A little bit of beach (sand) but mostly grass right up to the water. Safe for kids and there might be plenty of others to play with. There's a little playground, snack bar and and god restaurant at the base of the ferry pier. Ferry might be interesting. The drive down from Cortona took less than an hour and was easy enough. Consider exploring the other side of the lake but I found it less accessible. It's more of a local hangout, which is much more interesting. And you will see why if you experience the (possible) crushing heat.
