You can’t miss it, it’s an amazing experience, especially if you get to see turtles, as was our case, we saw 3 babies coming out of the turtle nest.
They do an impressive and totally necessary job, the boy who made the walk explained super interesting things and I was able to guide two babies to the sea next to him.
Unspeakable feeling if you like animals.
You have to adopt a turtle (€30) on the Archelon website and once we have done the hike we decided to give them €20 more.

Visited as a couple on the 8am turtle walk. Whilst we didn’t see any turtles (only the nests) we learnt a lot about these beautiful creatures from our hosts. The money you pay to go on the work also lets you adopt a hatchling so it really is money well spent!
We were also staying in the old town and really enjoyed the early morning walk all the way from the old town to the meeting point!

The team makes a valuable contribution to the preservation of sea turtles and maintains and secures the nests, while also doing a lot of educational work for anyone interested.
We were lucky enough to be able to be there when the little turtles hatched in Rethymnon in September 2023 and were also able to accompany the hard-working volunteers of this organization as they opened a dead nest and received a lot of information from them about the respective development stages of the eggs and the reasons why the nest could not develop. Very informative and educational.
You can support this wonderful project by donating or adopting a turtle.
We were absolutely thrilled!

We did an 8am guided walk on Rethymno beach. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English and we learnt a lot about the turtles. We were very lucky to see two baby turtles. These should have made it to the sea during the night so another member of the Archelon team came to take care of them. Definitely worth it.

Les conférences à l'hôtel et sur les sites ont été très enrichissantes. Les excavations des nids furent passionnantes. Le sauvetage de 7 tortues restera un souvenir inoubliable.

Dziś widzieliśmy, jak wolontariusze otworzyli ostatnie gniazdo żółwi, by pomóc najsłabszym osobnikom. Zaczekali 10 dni od wyklucia pierwszych osobników i pomogli kilku w dotarciu do morza. Bardzo ciekawy i wzruszający proces. Wolontariusze chętnie o wszystkim opowiadali, tłumaczyli. Maluchy patrzyły jak zahipnotyzowane. :)

Hi Paula. In Rethymnon, there is a kiosk devoted to the work of Archylon Sea Turtle Protection Society. They will be able to give you details of sites in your particular part of the coastline. There is a 20 mile stretch overall. There were many turtle trails and eggs along the beach where I was staying. Each early morning 3 people from the Society walk a section of the beach to mark all the sites and count the eggs. We accompanied them and watched them working. The depth of the eggs and the distance from the water’s edge is very important. The depth has to be 50 centimetres, and the distance not more than 50 metres in this particular area. Each site is marked with a metal triangle, and the gps position, then the trail from the sea is smoothed over. It is a wonderful experience.

Hi, Is this something you would need to book for or can you turn up and have a look around. I would love to see the conservation effort while i'm there next week
