Leuke tentoonstelling maar weinig nieuws te zien, vond de entree prijs van 20 euro echt veel te fors voor wat er te zien was.

I visited early on a weekday morning and I was quite pleased that there was no crowding! Although there are guided tours and audio guides available, I decided to read the information available, which had a wealth of information! I learned a lot about how Malta endured World War 2, which included civilians working for the allies, rations, strategies, and about weapons. I enjoyed going through the rooms and seeing the offices and artifacts from the 1940’s as well! Overall, I had a great experience!

We first visited here in 2019 and were told that work was going on to open more areas so we decided to do just that. Unfortunately Covid and personal reasons prevented us from doing so since then until now.
Very glad we did. The new areas opened had been turned into an exhibition about the invasion of Italy. It was informative and interesting.
After this we took a guided tour of the War Rooms. Our guide was interesting and bought to life how they were operated during the war.
I would recommend a visit to anyone who is interested in the pivotal role Malta played in the war in the Mediterranean and North Africa.
We were both pleased we had made the effort to return from the UK. We'll worth the effort.

This is a fascinating glimpse into life in Malta during WW2..The exhibits are well designed and explained and Michael’s guided tour was just the right length and had the right information. At 20 euros a person it’s not cheap but great value for money. Highly recommended

It was impressive to learn what role Malta would play for the 2nd edition. World War II played.
Operation Husky was instrumental in the course of the war.
And there are many exhibits from this period.
Also the strategic headquarters from 1943.
Highly recommended

Finding it:
To find this there are several routes. From upper barrakka gardens, right in the middle of the gardens are some black gates which lead down steps to what is signposted gun salute. Go down these and pay for tickets. After this you follow the path and steps around. The gate doesn’t actually say they lead to the war rooms which isn’t helpful, but they do. The other route is to go over the main bridge to the right of the gardens where the traffic comes and goes around the roundabout. There is a slope where you have the buses on your left and the main Valletta wall on your right. You can see the brown signs looking down this slope. The signs point to the left but we actually came up from visiting them to the right where you will see grey metal steps. I have added some photos which I hope help you.
Now the review!
Worth making the effort to find them! Not the cheapest but so much to see and read you could spend a good few hours here if you wished. Loads of history in a maze of a place which adds to the story and you can get a good feel for how it must have felt. Well worth it.
Can pay when get there and we paid for the underground bunker tour as well which was also worth it with our guide Michael who was fab and funny.

This museum proved a little difficult for us to find – but then these fortified war rooms deep under the Upper Barracca Gardens were no doubt designed to be so! With hindsight, the route from Valletta Bus Station is straight forward – go into the Ganado Gardens and take the first left into a small tunnel that leads to the ‘Lascaris Ditch’. The signs are there but (to us at any rate) not that obvious. There are other routes of course, but again, signage is perhaps not always obvious.
The War Rooms are however, absolutely worth the effort to find. There is so much to see; the amount of material on display is amazing both in it range and detail. We were fortunate to visit the War Rooms the on the day that the ‘Operation Husky’ exhibition opened, with fascinating insights into the invasion of Sicily in 1943. This exhibition almost doubles the size of the museum and is worthy of a visit in itself. A guided tour including the operations room and the rationale behind it was really well explained; it answered a lot of the questions we had about how all those big maps, moveable blocks and display boards worked and what happened in the back rooms by way of support. We came away with a real feel for how the rooms must have looked and functioned back in the day. Amazing.

Excellent refurbishment of the original war rooms as they were gradually moved further underground during WW2 at Lascaris in Valetta under the Upper Barrakka Gardens that overlook the Grand Harbour including French Creek where HMS Illustrious was repaired temporally before a full refit in the USA. Original fittings still remain including the telephonist booths the filter room & the operations room. the first set up was about 40 m below & then the second room at 80 m below the surface as bombing intensified. A addition is the Operation Husk exhibition that covers the Allied invasion of Sicily. Fascinating detail & an atmospheric feel about he whole visit. My only disappointment was that there is no visitor guide manual that would help retain all of the information, Watch "The Malta Story" on YouTube before you go to see first hand the rooms you will visit.

If you're into WW2 history, this is a must-see. Fascinating background on the role Malta played in world history and especially WW2. It rivals the Churchill War Rooms in London!

Hi there! I want to see the Lascaris Tunnels and the Malta War Headquarters? Are they both on the same tour or separate?

Hi, They form part of the same complex. The War HQ Tunnels were used between 1940 and early 1943 during eth Air Battle for Malta and the Lascaris War Rooms replaced in May 1943 in time for the launching from them of Operation Husky - the Allied invasion of Sicily when they served as General Eisenhower's Head Quarters. They are two very large underground complexes hence being separated into two distinct visits with separate tickets. the whole of them measures an area of 38,000 square meters of tunnelling. We recommend doing them both either on the same day or on different days. Both went on in use until 1977.

Can anyone tell me how long this attraction takes? We are on a tight schedule and wonder if an hour is sufficient?
Thank you!

Do all the war rooms require one to go through narrow tunnels?
If one suffers from claustrophobia, is there much else to see at Lascaris War rooms?
Đã viết vào 16 tháng 7, 2019
I didn't find that the tunnels were claustrophobic, even though I have experienced claustrophobia in small, confined spaces (for example, the Cuu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam).

I would like to visit this tour, can anyone explain the location so I don’t get lost please ? I’m familiar with most of the capital, is it close to the Malta experience ?
Đã viết vào 5 tháng 5, 2018
Start the tour from Upper Barakka and you will be taken to the War Rooms as part of the tour. Upper Barakka is close to Castille, the prime minister's office.

Is the museum free in any of the weekdays? Thanks!

No it is a voluntary organisation but it's very reasonable.

I won’t have much time in Valletta (visiting on 1 March) and I’m very keen to get on one of these tours. Does anyone know at what times of day the guided tours run? Also, how long do they last and is the guided tour included in the admission process or is it extra?
Many thanks in advance for your replies.

Guided tour is included in the price and takes under an hour. Think they are every hour on the hour

I am still confused about the location of the best entrance to the War rooms for someone with some mobility issues. How do I get to the entrance with the fewest stairs

Thank you for your query. The easiest way is to approach the War Rooms from the Bus Station at St. James Ditch where all the ground is level. Once you are there you need to enter into Herbert Ganado Gardens by going past a large iron gate across a large archway into the garden proper, turn left into a smaller tunnel the floor of which is part ramp and part steps (about 15 steps). This will bring you into the Lascaris Ditch which is all flat. The war rooms are mostly accessible save for its toilets at present while new ones are being built. I hope that this makes it clearer for you.
Enjoy your visit.
Mario
