You can no longer drive from the church in the center to the abbey that stands on the hill. The road is closed. You can only climb about 900 meters on foot or by bike. By car you have to detour 4 km via Eselborn. You will then pass the station.
The Benedictine monastery of St. Mauritius and the church built in 1910 are still in use today. The church and crypt are open and free to visit. In the crypt below the abbey is a very interesting photo exhibition about the life and work of the Benedictines. The church is beautiful but simple.

A timeless moment that deserves to be experienced.
Wonderful peace and great introspection.
Everything is conducive to meditation and prayer.

Two ways to get there: by car or on foot.
Due to the presence of a few monks, the abbey cannot be visited but you can enter the church and visit the exhibition in the crypt. Exhibition which explains monastic life and the history of the abbey which resisted wars despite the requisitions of its premises.
Welcome to the bookstore by warm and exciting monks as well as the presence of a souvenir shop available where the monks sell their own apple juice.
Possibility of taking a tour outside the abbey and discovering a monument commemorating the War of the Luxembourg Peasants refusing and revolting against incorporation into the Napoleonic troops. This memorial recalls the struggles of Luxembourgers to gain their independence at the end of the 18th century.
This relatively recently built abbey in Romanesque style symbolizes Clervaux.

Nous y avons effectué une belle visite dans l'église. Quand à l'exposition, elle est très complète et explicative.
Il y a aussi une petite boutique.
Belle découverte.

We walked up here from the centre of Clervaux in less than 30 minutes. we caught the last few minutes of a mass in the abbey which was a real bonus. then we looked around and visited the exhibition which tells an interesting story of the community, incuding its forced exit by the Nazis in WW2. This is really worth a vsit if you are in the town. It's a Christian community and so no charge, but a donation to their work is appreciated.

The Monastery consists of an impressive set of buildings in neoromanesque style built in 1909-1910 under the Dutch architect Johannes Franziskus Klomp's design. Shale from the Ardennes is the material used for the construction of the Abbey. This was intended to for the Benedictine monks of Glanfeuil who had been expelled from France.
The Abbey as a whole is an imposing work of architecture whose magnificence is enhanced by the fact that it's located on a height of the Ardennes massif dominating the Clerf valley. It's dedicated to St. Maurice and St. Maur.
In spite of being rather simple buildings, without much ornamentation – soberness is a characteristic of both the outer façade and the interior – the said buildings as such are of a great value, particularly the church. In its front façade the portal is a remarkable element, as well as the rose window, worth being looked at from inside in order to observe the beautiful bright colours of its glasses. The former consists of three decreasing semicircular arches embedded in the thickness of the wall. The octagonal belfry tower is perhaps the most outstanding feature of the exterior. The upper part of that tower consists of two storeys. On each one of its eight sides there are four small windows, two on each one of the storeys, ending in a semicircular arch and separated from one another by a thin little pillar. The whole ensemble is of a great beauty.
Once in the interior the neoromanesque style is endorsed by the arcade on both sides of the central nave, separating that nave from the side aisles. As a matter of fact, the arches concerned are supported by robust though very simple square columns topped by decorative poles. The nave ceiling has no definite style while in those of the side aisles the neoromanesque style is perceptible: semicircular arches link the aforesaid columns to pilasters attached to the side inner walls. The aisles are much lower than the central nave. The church is very plainly decorated.
The high altar is of an uncomplicated design but very impressive as contemplated from some distance together with the other elements of the chancel, such as the candle holders. It calls up the Sacred Sacrament and is the work of Philippe Kaeppelin. The stained glass windows by Maurice Rocher are of a nicely decorative nature, especially those in the apse, behind the high altar and those of the rose window.
Particularly interesting are the gothic altarpieces located in different parts of the church walls. They date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Among these, a Pietà, close to the entrance, is a real marvel.
In the crypt, located on the left hand side of the main entrance looking at the buildings there is an interesting exhibition on monastic life. There it's possible to watch some precious books, documents, photos, miniatures and other items related to the Abbey and to the monk community in general. Apart from the interest aroused by such items, the place itself is very nice and peaceful. Two eye catching marble altars are inside that crypt. It's therefore worth spending some time in it.
The Abbey is consequently a fantastic place to visit, particularly the church. This and its crypt as well as the shop are by the way the only buildings open to the public. It's a captivating place where one can spend a stupendous moment. It's recommended to walk from the Clervaux city center to that Abbey. On a sunny day it can certainly imply a very pleasant and relaxing walk thus giving the possibility to enjoy the fabulous views which stretch along the way concerned.

The architecture of the abbey self is beautiful to see though the colour is a bit monotonous. Also the interior is sober but at the time we visited this abbey, there was a photo exposition from Therese de Lisseux. From the centre of Clervaux is just about 1,2 km distance and there is a road behind the church of Clervaux to go there but we did it by car. The parking area is just outside the abbey and there is also restroom.
