A great place to waste a day. Best on warm and sunny days but great also mid winter if you wear the right clothes. End the time there with pizza and beer.

Spent 4 hours on the islands. There are 2 islands that are connected by a small bridge. Got their via the Legacy of the Fjords cruise. A few maps dotted around the 2 islands to help get around. Walked around the south island first then over the bridge and around the north island - expect hiking type trails so wear decent shoes - it was end of October and was a bit slippery under foot. Not many signs were in English so that was a bit frustrating. Half the museum itself was closed - no idea why - the sandwich board outside said it was open but was locked. No staff around so it was a bit weird.

A cautionary note: if you have mobility issues, travel in Oslo or Bergen will be much more challenging. The fortress was high on our must see list, and glad we visited, but beware, there are steep, hard to navigate stairs, low overhead, and in general, it can be challenging.
Your entry gives you a audio tour guide and that is very helpful. Take your time, enjoy the furnishing and explanations. It is an interesting glimpse into history.

Oscarsborg Fortress is located on two small islands across from the town of Drobak. Even a brief glance on a map confirms that this location is essential to protecting Oslo from a sea borne invasion, and indeed a stronghold in one fashion or another has existed here since Christian IV’s reign in the 1640’s. The installation was continuously upgraded over the years from the 1814 war with Sweden, to construction of larger German guns and an underwater torpedo battery in the 1890’s. The latter are by far the most famous of the islands’ weapons, playing a pivotal role in the sinking of the heavy cruiser Blucher during the Battle of Drobak Sound on April 9, 1940. The area continued to hold a small garrison of troops through the Cold War, with the torpedo tubes decommissioned in 1993 and the officer school closing in 2002. It morphed into a tourist attraction thereafter and remains a civilian citadel of relaxation.
I visited here while taking a cruise (via Legacy of the Fjords) from Oslo, arriving at 1PM and leaving at 9PM. After seeing the museum (see separate review), I spent a couple hours walking around both islands. Southern Kaholmen island has the majority of the impressive attractions, including the marina, old barracks, and walking trails that circumvent the island. The neighboring islet contains the torpedo batteries (closed when I visited), the Commander’s house (ditto), and a small restaurant on the waterfront. Overall my time on the islands was a pleasant enough diversion and a worthy escape from the city’s grasp. The area clearly seems to cater more to Norwegian tourists with minimal to no descriptions in English. Admittedly, the travel on the boat to and from the capital city was more memorable than the visit to the fortress itself. I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide whether it’s worth the time and effort for a visit; you may want to synchronize your trip with a guided tour of the area although I believe these are only given in the native language.

Fantastisk flott sted! Fint holdt, super hyggelige de som jobber der og helt gjennomført! Vi var to voksne og barn på 11 og 8 år.
Vi hadde to overnattinger på hotellet og koste oss maks! Barna synes det var veldig stas og bo som de var militære. Det som drar ned er middagstilbudet på restauranten som hører til hotellet. Det var helt grei mat til de voksne, men alt for dyrt i forhold til hva vi fikk servert. Det var kun pølse med pomes som barnemeny. Frokosten var kjempe god, men de gikk til stadighet tom for drikke og de varme rettene. Må derfor beregne litt tid til frokosten
Vi hadde et flott opphold og ikke en gang sa barna at de kjedet seg!

Buying ferry tickets on the Fortress side as not returning to Drøbak, it was great strolling around the island for a couple of hours and seeing the numerous former military buildings.
Within the impressive main fortress, museum exhibits give a snapshot of its history. Ascending to the next level was to see what a robust bastion it was, complete with possible moat.
Making our way to the opposite harbour we got the early afternoon ferry back to Oslo. A pleasant relaxing trip.

Mit einer kleinen Fähre kann man stündlich von Sundbrygga aus zur Festung übersetzen. (Parplatz ist +~400 Meter entfernt, ist eine schöne kleine Wanderung bis zur Anlegestelle da dort auch Überreste einer Festung zu sehen sind). Ein Familienticket kostet 250 NOK (2 Erw./3 Kin - inkl. Rückreise). Die Überfahrt dauert nur 5 Minuten. Auf der Insel kann man eine schöne kleine Wanderung machen, es gibt genügend Picknickplätze :). Im Sommer gibt es am Fjord auch eine Terasse. Diese war leider noch geschlossen im April. War ein schöner Mittag (2-3 Stunden)

Az erőd a norvég történelem egy szeletkéje. Bár egész napos program az utazással, de megéri megnézni. Drobák településig kell eljutni, hogy a 2 kis szigeten lévő erődbe eljussunk.

Se filmen "Kongens Nei", eller søg på Youtube efter "sinking of Blücher" og man vil forstå stedets historie. Fantastisk historisk sted, hvor de kanoner der sænkede den svære tyske krydser "Blücher" d. 9. April 1940 stadig står på deres plads. Desuden et flot, flot sted. 10 minutters færgetur fra Drøbak.

Hi, How do you get to Oscarsborg from Oslo using public transport please? I read in a review that you can get to Drobak by bus and then take a boat. Can you buy the bus tickets on the bus? Do you have to hire a boat to then get to the fortress?
