Absolutely the most magical experience- everything I had hoped for and more. We took our 20 month old daughter and I was really looking for something special that would appeal to her as she's at an age to really take notice but not old enough for a lot of the activities that other experiences offer. This was the perfect choice! (There were also plenty of the other activities for older children, but enough for her even without the extras.)
The staff are absolutely phenomenal- I contacted them regarding the refreshments as my daughter has allergies and they couldn't have done more - they asked about what she could have, went and bought something specially for her, emailed me back to check and had everything sorted so there wasn't even the slightest fuss on the day!
We also had quite a lot of snow, making it even more magical. The staff, again, made sure it ran smoothly, updating Facebook page to reassure and answering any questions people had.
They've set the bar so high, I just hope we can get tickets again next year as I can't imagine any other Santa experience coming close!

Visited 25th November with grandchildren (boys 3 and 4). This is an excellent experience to see Santa. So well organised from arriving to leaving. Lovely carriages on the train. All of the workers/volunteers are fantastic and so friendly. Our boys loved the elf show, the happy conductor and not forgetting Santa and all of his helpers. Cookies and a juice for the kids and mince pies and a drink for the adults was most refreshing. A lovely tea room too and a workshop where the kids could write to Santa and make reindeer dust. Thank you Tanfield for such a memorable day.

Magical! Fabulous experience, at first we thought oh no what have we done as the entrance and service in the cafe isn't very jolly shall we say but I put that down to teenagers serving who arnt very aware of how to make a small child excited. But once you step into the shed to see sleepy and jolly, your opinion instantly changes. They were magical and full of the joys of Christmas cheer. Then it was onto the platform where the conductor was just as good. My daughter spoke to him on several occasions and was very keen to keep going back. Santa and his Elves were bright and merry and the gift was great.
The activity centre was so festive and everyone was lovely. Especially the two ladies in the cafe who loved speaking to my daughter. I recommend the mince pie and non alcoholic mulled wine. The trip down is just magical in the dark and if you scan the QR code on the train window you can play the trains own Christmas mix which is so fitting. Don't forget to count the naughty Elves along the way!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at Tanfield railway last weekend. All the volunteers were very friendly and knowledgable and it was great to see young people volunteering, shovelling coal and learning from the older folk. We booked onto the Causey Arch tour and our guide, John, really knew a lot about its history which he passed on well over our walk, and answered all our questions perfectly. The impression we got throughout the day is that all the volunteers are really passionate about the local history and about steam power. They are very proud (rightly so) of their railway.
We tried out both tearooms, at Tanfield East station for breakfast and then at St Andrews station for tea and a slice of AMAZING victoria sponge sandwich cake. Delicious!
We felt that we could have done with a map of the line to accompany the train timetable but that wasn't really a problem as there were lots of people to ask.Definitely recommend.

A super afternoon with my 84 year young parents enjoying a delicious afternoon tea and riding in the Director's Carriage for the 6 mile journey. Staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. Susan waited on us with lots of historical knowledge about the railway and plenty of humour. Thoroughly recommend.

Great place to take the family or friends the tea room stocks delicious food and the cakes are to die for the train ride was brilliant and all the staff are very helpful I'm definitely going again soon

Beautifully maintained old railway and lovely nostalgic trip on a steam train. Great day for adults and children alike as my 4 year old loved it too. We enjoyed a snack at the tearoom and a nice walk at the causeway arch and along the river. It was good to be able to see in the engine shed too. Well worth a visit and a credit to all the volunteers who invest their time into creating the experience. We chatted to a particularly interesting volunteer and listened to his fascinating child hood story of an early fascination for steam trains.

Had a really lovely time, we enjoyed an afternoon tea on a steam train, great value as you can spend the whole day getting on and off the train for one price. I wish we had more time to spend there. All the people involved are lovely and really friendly and full of knowledge and they are all volunteers. Really worth a visit.

Just needed to say a huge thank you for the volunteers at tanfield railway for my son's 3rd birthday party today. We were blown away with how helpful you all were and making the day extra special for him.
We hired a train carriage for an hour round trip for 30 friends and family.
Giving us the complimentary train ride with the poor weather, a room for us on the station for us to have the cake and trips led by Barry and Harry to the engine and carriage sheds. It was the perfect party and we will be recommending it to others as the kids and adults enjoyed it thoroughly. At least 2 groups have said they'll be back which is lovely to hear.
The volunteers are amazing, so helpful and friendly. Geoff helped organise everything by email and everyone was great on the day to help us out. The train and stations are maintained superbly, you can see how much love and care they put into their work it's wonderful to see.
Thank you for everything and I'm sure we'll see you soon for another trip .

This is a lovely little railway. We enjoyed our visit very much. We rode it to the end initially and then got out at Causey Arch to admire the magnificent arch and the lovely stream beneath. We walked back to Andrew House via the bridle path and had some cake and tea there while waiting for the next train back. It's a lovely day out for people with young children, although, during the summer they run steam engines rather than electric ones because of the risk of setting the woodland on fire.

How long is the journey on the train when you are having the afternoon tea?

As long as you want it to be as you can stay on the train and do more than one trip using your ticket. You need to check their timetable on line. The train will start and finish at East Tanfield

Is this dog friendly. Have booked for Sunday 8th, private compartment understanding the dog would be allowed. Just need this verified.

I dont believe dogs apart from if its a guide dog are allowed. Best thing to do is contact them on social media or email

Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help. I'm thinking about booking the afternoon tea for my mam's 85th birthday as she would love a trip on a steam train but I'm struggling to find much info about the trips so any would be gratefully appreciated.
I know the trip begins at Tanfield but where else does the train stop and about how far/long is the journey?

The ticket price includes unlimited travel all day, if you so desire. However, booking is essential and they seem to be pretty busy already this year. I would suggest you look at their website and view "events," which has a sub section for afternoon teas. You will find all the train times, throughout the year and it also gives details of the various stations.

I’ve only ever been on the weekend, sorry. It runs each day on the weekend but I cannot say if it runs on weekday.

Hi I will be doing the North Pole express and I am wondering what you wear for it ?
I seen on other Christmas train rides like this they wear pyjamas but on the picture for this people are just wearing normal clothes
It sounds like a stupid question but it’s so I know I have to go and but my little boy some new pyjama for it

It’s do what you want. Wear whatever you want, from plain jeans and a t shirt to a big furry polar bear costume. If your little tyke won’t get dressed, then pj’s do the same job. Note though it’s a bit cold

Who provides the cakes etc for tea room.as we would like to see if they could provide catering for us.we love the whole experience of tanfield.

I think the bate approach should be made via the railway - or go to the railway, have a trip and go to the tea room and ask there.

Going in the North Pole santa train at weekend never been.... where do the children meet the big man please? Is there a huge queue? What refreshments to the adults and the kids get and are there alternative drinks etc to buy? How long are you actually on the train? I've heard brilliant things but I'm starting to feel nervous as my daughter has literally just turned two and patience is one of those skills we are currently learning ;p
