I was delighted with our guided tour around the Paradise Mill especially as the guide had given up time to show us around when they realised how keen we were to see the mill. Anyone with an interest in textile weaving, and especially silk, will find the working Jaquard looms fascinating and my husband found the link to early computer programming equally interesting.

Having read about The Silk Museum and Paradise Mill in the periodical Art Quarterly, my interest was piqued. With a friend, I took a day return by train from London to Macclesfield. Nicola at the museum took us and others on an hour’s tour of Paradise Mill. What an absorbing, intriguing and interesting tour that proved to be and her obvious enthusiasm made the mill come alive again. The Silk Museum houses a vast range of nicely displayed and fascinating historical exhibits connected to the silk weaving /production business and the special exhibition called Macc Stripes is particularly noteworthy. The shop sells some really quality silk pieces and I couldn’t resist falling for a delightful lime green pure silk handkerchief edged in pink silk. All members of staff are helpful and charming. It was one of the most engaging days out I’ve had in a long time. Mill and Museum are a gem.

Amazing! Thank you so much, Daisy provided a really interesting and vibrant tour of Paradise Mills, she involved the children and made the whole experience enthralling! The Silk Museum is very well worth a visit, lovely staff, friendly cafe and shop, certainly worth a few hours of your time on any visit to Macclesfield.

I went with a small group of friends to this quirky, fascinating museum. I say 'quirky' in the most positive way. Where else would you find a museum, a working mill and an Egyptian collection? Oh and it also had a nice tea room and gift shop. A super experience. Probably the best part was the guide's explanation and demonstration of the working mill. It was exceptional and all the staff were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

Wonderful museum. Full of fascinating exhibits connected to the silk industry. It’s well worth booking the guided tour of the mill. Very interesting & the working machinery was fascinating. It’s the third time I’ve taken friends who are visiting Macclesfield there, and they have all been very impressed.
The Tunnicliffe exhibits are also beautiful

Thank you for your kind review. All of our team are very proud to be part of these inspirational museums. Please keep an eye out for our exhibition and event programmes and of course there is time still to enjoy the Charles Tunnicliffe prints as they are on show until the beginning of April 2022.

Best museum we’ve visited in a long, long time. Thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the silk mill, so steeped in history and the tour guide was superb and bought the mill alive with his commentary. Incredible to see the looms working and hear about the day to day workings of the mill and all of the intricate processes - the chance to do interactive activities really made a difference too, especially with the younger members of our party.

Being retired we visit an awful lot of museums, the Silk Museum is one of the best. The static displays in the main museum are very interesting but the real gem is Paradise Mill next door where you can go on a tour, see the machines in action and learn a great deal about silk weaving. Make sure you book a tour, otherwise you are missing a treat.
In the museum there are 1940 maps of Germany printed on silk which airmen could screw up very small, hide them amongst their clothes and then use them to plan their escape if they were shot down. My son, who is in the RAF, has a map of Afghanistan printed on silk, they still issue silk maps to airmen just in case they get trapped behind enemy lines! A low tech solution but it works.

Absolutely fascinating place - Mill and Museum. A brilliantly knowledgeable and engaging guide, Daniel, led a tour around the mill which was simply overwhelming. A real glimpse into a rich piece of history the mill is an absolute gem - do not miss this experience. Daniel shared lots of little stories about the silk manufacturing history and process which really enhanced the experience. Cannot recommend this place enough. I just made the tour in time by accident so make sure you book a slot.
The museum is beautiful. So much to see and read and it's all incredible. My mind was blown.
I strongly suggest giving this place a full half day e.g. tour in the morning - break - then the museum or vice versa. There's a little tea shop attached for the break. There's a lot to see and soak in and it can get rather overwhelming with all the info and machinery to examine. I was there for 3 hours and I could have stayed another hour easily but had a very long drive back home so needed to leave.
Trust me - don't rush. It's beautiful.

We booked a visit because the weather was wet, and what an amazing experience it was! Daniel was such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who made it so interesting for both adults and children. You get such a real experience of how the silk cloth was produced - incredibly intricate - snd what the atmosphere would have been like as a mill worker. Come see the very first “computers” and how they were programmed. Would recommend a visit to anyone, snd schools studying the Victorians and machinery history. FABULOUS!!!

Is there parking at the museum
Hi Jill, there is free 1 hour street parking right outside the museum. If you would like to stay longer there is a pay for council run carpark on the corner of Park lane - outside Wetherspoons pub.

Many years ago I was given a silk headscarf/square made by the Macclesfield Silk Company. Sadly I have lost this and would like to replace it. Where may I purchase this scarf. It was a traditional fox hunting scene in yellow and red. Please help. Thank you Jacqueline Stewart
