Sticky Waterfalls or Buatong Waterfalls are the only place where you can safely climb up the waterfalls. There are fixed ropes to facilitate climb up from lower level to upper level. The surface of the cascades is tufa, which is a kind of limestone.

I’ve watched too many videos recommending the sticky waterfalls so there was no chance I wouldn’t go and try it out.
Climbing up the waterfall was so much fun that I just had to do it again. The first time we were a bit afraid for our phones so we didn’t take them. If you’re careful it’s no problem to bring it though. So for the second attempt we decided to take one with us and were able to make some great pictures. I wouldn’t necessarily call the rocks sticky but they are definitely not slippery at all and it’s super safe to walk on them.
We came from Chiang Mai and it took us about 1 hour 15 minutes to get there. The visit of the waterfalls itself is free. If you want a locker they charge you 30 baht but be aware that they only have a few and they might fill up quickly. There is also some food and drinks that you can buy if you need anything (fyi alcohol is not allowed). They offer showers and bathrooms but as they don’t charge any entry fee the cleanliness might depend on the person before you.
All in all I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something different to do

We weren't sure about whether this would be a good activity with our kids (3.5,6.5,10) but it was great! We all wore water clothes and walked down the stairs the whole way. At the bottom we took off our shoes (put them in one back-pack we took) and walked up all the waterfalls barefoot. It took about 20 mins. It wasn't too busy (it's the first week of November). Our 10 year old managed on her own. Husband helped the other two. Very few places are slippery and they're generally easy to spot because they have moss. Parking is free and plentiful. Good toilet facilities. Shop to buy lunch/snacks/smoothies etc. Lovely fish next to the entrance that you can feed for a donation of your choice. There's a walk through the trees to the water source which takes about 15-20 mins both directions - nothing super special but nice to do.

Went with a group of about 12 of us and it was a bucket load of fun. The waterfall is on your left as you walk in, and there are various roots to take up and down. It’s a little bit slippery in places, but there are generally ropes and/or barriers to hold onto to help. If you’re still nervous, I’d a use walking down the stairs (to the right of the water) to the bottom, and walking up the waterfall from there. Walking up is a lot easier than walking down. Overall, it was a new and exciting experience! The water is so refreshing in the Thai heat

I read a lot about the Sticky Waterfalls as a great activity to do with children, I probably didn't do enough research but blogs etc seemed to suggest this was a fun and stress free experience for children and photos looked like a fairly easy gradient. In reality, there is a long walk down stairs to the bottom waterfall, and then the climb up is steep in most places. The rocks are amazingly non slip, but there are a lot of algae covered ones which are really slippery. The very top part is really sleep and slippery and we saw two adults slip and nearly fall all the way down, which would result in a bad injury. You are a while away from any medical help here, although there is a first aid point, but any serious injury would not be treated quickly. My 5 year old son (the signs do say for age 7 and over) loved it and it was a fun and unique experience with beautiful surroundings but pretty stressful as a parent! Cafe has lovely food for good prices but very slow.

As long as you go knowing it will probably be busy, have lots of kids and is more of a climbing experience than a ‘at peace in nature’, it’s a good experience if not a little ‘manufactured’.

Tong Waterfall offers a welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle. The cascading water creates a peaceful atmosphere, and the surrounding foliage provides a sense of tranquility.
Tips:
Bring waterproof phone case if any for best protection of your photo shots or filming.
Wear sturdy shoes: The path leading to the waterfall might be uneven or slippery.
Bring water and snacks: There may not be any shops or restaurants near the waterfall.
Be respectful of the environment: Leave no trace and avoid disturbing the natural beauty.

If you are in the Chiang Mai area, this will be your favorite attraction and I guarantee, you will not want to miss this. Get a driver, have him take you here after breakfast, pack some lunch and or snacks for the long drive (especially if you have young children) and be prepared to have an adventure! You might be tempted to stop along the way there at other attractions like we did but I can surely say you will regret not spending the entire day at the falls if you stop at other places. We stopped at other places, limiting our time at the waterfalls and regretted it so much! We have a 2- and three-year-old, and it might not be advisable to take such young children, but we did and it was actually okay. You can walk down the steps all the way to the last fall and then trek your way up the falls. It is unbelievable and looks so dangerous but it is not. It is called sticky waterfalls for a reason. My children were jumping up and down so happily the entire time they were here and I can say this was the best family adventure, un almost surreal experience that I will treasure forever.

From Chiang Mai it is around 60 km to the Bua Tong Waterfall, or in other words, by car, if you drive briskly and the road is fairly clear, it takes just under 60 minutes.
There was no entrance fee for the visit - nice.
We first walked to the Cold Spring, where incredibly clear water comes out of the ground - you can read the story behind the spring below.
From here we actually wanted to take the Nature Trail, which basically leads around the waterfall, but unfortunately it was completely closed for repair work (as of January 2024).
So we went down the footbridge right next to the waterfall.
There are basically four steps, sometimes there are several small arms, that the water rushes down the mountain. At first I was a little disappointed, but that quickly passed.
I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
In any case, I climbed from the very bottom to the very top, my wife carried my clothes and watched me and took photos.
At around 34 degrees, even the simple walk up the absolutely non-slippery, sintered bed of the waterfall - always walking in cool water - was a bit sweaty - but it was a lot of fun.
There are the usual toilets at the car park and also a small restaurant - but if it's busy, you have to expect significant waiting times.
Recommendation.

I'll be in Chiang Mai for the first time late December, will there be enough water to make it worth it?
Đã viết vào 30 tháng 11, 2019
There should be, these falls are fed by an underground water source fed by the on site Rainbow Pond.

How long should we allow for visiting the falls? We have a bus in the afternoon so time is limited!

I spent a couple of hours there which was plenty for me. You can stay longer as it’s a park with hangout and picnic.

How strenuous of a hike is it up the falls for non hikers?
Đã viết vào 12 tháng 12, 2018
It’s broken into 3 sections so you get a chance to have a breather but it is pretty easy, it’s called the sticky waterfall because the grip from the sandstone is incredible so it’s unlikely that you will slip. It’s an easy climb so have fun x

Hi, is this a steep/ hilly drive from Chiang Mai? We have hired a car but it’s only a 1.2l engine and it really struggled getting up to Doi Ithanon National Park today! It was a horrible drive with such an under powered car! Looking for advice about how this drive compares! Thanks
Đã viết vào 26 tháng 11, 2018
We didn't have any trouble on either road. The same car and driver took us to both Doi Ithanon National Park and to Bua Thong Waterfalls. I do not recall that it was hilly. I'm sure this answer is after the fact so I hope you had a great time. We did!

Hi would there be any problems renting a 125 cc moped and using it to get to the park?
Đã viết vào 11 tháng 11, 2018
No , renting a moped/motorbike is very easy and there is plenty of parking at the waterfalls. It would be very easy to do it this way.
