Neue Residenz is the elegant palace building at Domplatz. It is a 40 room Baroque complex which houses the State Rooms and State Gallery along with a charming Rose Garden. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm daily and entry is €6 per adult. The Rose Garden can be accessed freely and affords lovely views of the lower section of the historic centre of Bamberg.
Neue Residenz was constructed mostly in the 17th-century and is a fine representation of Austrian-Bohemian Baroque architecture. The State Rooms are highly decorative with outstanding ceiling frescos. The Imperial Hall fresco works by Melchior Steidl (1709) is a masterpiece, probably one of the finest of its kind in Franconia.
The State Gallery is where you find European masterpieces mostly from the Baroque period. This makes for a nice art viewing experience as well. Easy to spend 45-60 minutes between the two, make sure to allow another 10-15 for the Rose Garden as part of your visit as well.

Rather impressive palace although it was not completed as planned. The stones sticking out at the one end shows where it stopped.

New Residence on the Domberg was created in two building phases over more than 100 years. From the 1600s is the late Renaissance style and then the 1700s Baroque style. Since 1965 the New Residence has also housed the Bamberg State Library

Little insider tip: The New Residence consists of much more than the romantic phototope in the Rose Garden! To the left of the gate you go to the more than just pictorial gallery and to the not worth seeing stately rooms of the residence, which consist not only of one, but also of 3 different eras and 4 complete main apartments, as well as various halls and secondary and guest apartments. Not only does it take a long time to find so much high-quality space and art from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, the Baroque and the Morocco and Classicism and on to the end of the 19th century, but there are also a few very specials, such as the chambers of the Greek ex-king Otto and his wife Amalie, a considerable number of Venice views of Canaletto, the Erthal desk, where Napoleon also wrote several letters, or the guard room converted into a - highly luxurious - billiard room. And if you still don't like all this, you can also look to the right of the portal to see if there's a special exhibition with some of Bamberg's numerous bibliophile treasures in the Grad State Library. From the richly illuminated Romanesque emperor gospels, to medieval and early modern travel diaries or medical and scientific writings (and their sometimes very remarkable to peculiar accounts, discoveries and recipes) to richly painted and gilded ostentatious papers, everything was already on offer...Moreover, the whole thing is housed in the adorably beautiful, former garden halls of the residence, so that you often do not even know whether you should rather look into the display cases, or at the drums...Only the entrance is reserved something special, to the left of the passage to the rose garden, then not to the right to the toilets, to the lockers or to the reading room (which are also nice or practical, but unfortunately all for library users*interiors), but with a bit of luck you can take a quick look through the glass door into the hall as a tourist ;-)), but further along the corridor to the curve, and then please not further straight into the book rental, but to the side of the latticed staircase through a very narrow and dark passage and an inconspicuous door into the exhibition rooms. Whether degree is exhibition can be seen either by the display in the passage to the rose garden, or by whether the small, dark passage is currently open or closed...
And no, toilets for Touris are only available on the other side for visitors to the stately rooms (there are lockers for visitors to the exhibitions...), or, for those who just want to go to the rose garden or the exhibitions of the State Library, at the very back of the rose garden left BEHIND the cafe, up in the arcades - not so easy to find if you don't know where to look, and that you either have to meander past the cafee on the far left or far right through the tree avenues, or if necessary just ignore the barriers of the cafe, which are sometimes set up a bit strangely... And yes, in the Alte Residenz and behind de Dom there are theoretically other public toilets, but they are really only for insiders, sometimes closed and virtually completely untraceable for locals without Help center...

There is a tour of part of the lower rooms that is only in German. However, we jumped on the tour and found that each room has a summary in English and the guide we had also spoke English and answered any questions we had. Beautiful furnishings and décor with their original retained stucco work and frescoes. The upper level can be visited without a guide but there are no English descriptions of the items in the rooms and they are more sparsely furnished. Rooms and galleries in the town castle include much artwork which is not attributed or titled.

The New Residence in Bamberg is a 17th century palace with decorated ceilings, tapestries and works of art in over 40 rooms. The most impressive was the magnificent Imperial Hall. Entry costs €6, and MabergCard holders receive a €1 discount. It is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The day was very warm and there were lotsa stairs that I didn't want to negotiate. I took pictures outside and then went to the Rose Garden and some blessed shade.

This famous building is located on the Dompaltz. It was built 1695-1704. We saw it from the outside but we walked in the beautiful Rose garden. The view was amazing, too. It’s a must see site.

It's located right at the top where you need to do a bit of hill climb to reach the residence and cathedral is located just besides the residenz.

Don't miss this palace on your trip to Bamberg. It is just a quarter of mile from the Altes Rathaus up a short stairway and near the cathedral. It has a lovely rose garden as well with a beautiful view of the Bamberg rooftops.

** Is it enough 1 hour and 30 minutes in total to see the palace inside and the garden (although it is winter)?
** Are there lockers where you can leave your backpack and warm clothes?

Yes, they have lockers for a refundable 2€ deposit. I would suggest allocating more time if possible, but it depends on how thorough you want your visit to be. Since it is winter, there won’t be as much to see and enjoy in the garden.

Why can you not supply the same amount of information, in other languages, to all visitors, you only cater for German native speakers, I know enough to get by in the language but the dialect Spoken was too difficult, I was told on paying at front desk it's no problem as other language guides are available, these are not guides, one told you dimensions of a room? Why would we want to know bedroom is 90sq m?
The guide is informing on many things, she is so rushed through the many rooms she cannot take time for anyone.
You take money from tourists to the town but you are not catering for them, if you continue to do this negative reviews will be posted and no visitors will come, is this the way forward?
What do you do when people come from Viking river cruises? Or do they not?

I agree with your comments. For a international orientated place as Bamberg (as in tourists from all places) I also found the information in other languages not sufficient. That should be no problem, but the information about this could be better. I also heard at the front desk all the information would be available in English, but this unfortunately was not true.
However, this information should be shared with the Neue Residenz and not here I guess. I already mailed them last week about this.

No English tour availbale at any time when I visited last January. Just a really boring tour in German.
