Do this ride! Our family was hesitant to take a boat ride. I had planned to use Bacharach as a base and visit surrounding towns each day. We did this for four days, the last day, we decided to take this boat ride instead. I'm glad we did! It's one of those indelible memories - an experience that is just so special. We strolled out directly from Bacharach town center to just walk along the Rhine. We walked along the paved path south just a short distance and came to the little Bingen-Rudeshelmer shed/window. 16€ each to ride from Bacharach to St. Goar and back. The ride was so fun, there is a recorded description of landmarks as you float by. When you get off in St. Goar, you can stay as long as you want and pick the return boat of your choosing.

Beautiful day. The ferry arrived and left on time. The cruise lasted about 3 hours. Food was available. We passed many castles and the Rhine River Valley had vineyards extending up into the hills.A well worthwhile trip!

We booked 2 separate tickets and did both in one day, but I think you could have coordinated and done both experiences in the one ticket by staying in the boat for the round trip at the right sailing time noted on the schedules. The boat stops at each port on the route, but if you get off, you will need the right ticket to get back on again because they check your ticket on entry. The castle plus ticket and Ring ticket give you on and off privileges but only at the specified ports. Only the Rhine-experience ticket gives you unlimited on and off privileges and that works for 3 days on all boats.
Important notes:
There is no online booking capability, but you do not need to book in advance. We went on a Sunday in July when school vacations were on and we only needed to buy our ticket 15 minutes in advance at the ticket booth in Bingen. There was plenty of room on each boat.
For the ring ticket, the price of both chairlifts is included in the boat ticket. The directions tell you that walking is mainly flat, but there are some short uphill climbs in the towns and on the trail from Assmannshausen to Rüdesheim. We also found it difficult because there are very few signs to help you find the chair lifts and re-find the boat at the other end.
In beautiful Assmannshausen, the chairlift is in the center of town up an incline. Walk to the right when you find the beautiful Alte Bauernshanke Hotel perched at a split in the road and the entrance to the chairlift is up some steps to your right (see my photo). Both chairlifts only allow 2 people per car, although toddlers and small children can sit in your lap. When you get off the chairlift, the route is again poorly signed. Walk straight ahead on the path and turn right to walk in-front of the deer enclosure. (There is a hotel with restrooms there if you need them.) Walk past the deer enclosure keeping it on your right and then turn left on the forest trail at the t-junction. I think there was a small green sign to the Niederwald Monument on a tree there. Look for and follow this small green sign every time there is a split in the path. We had Google maps with us for backup too. When you get to the monument, if you keep walking behind the monument along the path and through the food court, you will come to the chairlift, which is again not signposted as far as we could see until you got there. When you exit the chairlift in Rüdesheim, walk downhill towards the river. Cross the railway tracks using the underpass and walk left as you face the river to find the boat dock.
On the boat, there are hard benches outside to sit and comfy seats inside. Bathrooms on board were clean. In fact, the whole boat was very clean and well maintained. Food was so so for our trip, but the ice cream sundaes were good. Wait-service on the top deck was a nice touch to save us time walking up and down to the bottom deck where the bar/food service was located.

We took the Rhine Cruise and saw the castles down & back. There is inside & outside seating with shade. Travel is at a comfortable speed & food was available. We were going to stop & tour a castle as the stop was on the written schedule. The boat didn't stop at the scheduled stop which was the only down side. So we just went back to Bergen & had dinner there.

Where can I get a departure schedule for the Bingen-St. Goar cruise? I will be traveling in Sept. 2017.

Schedules are not updated for 2017. But by and large it would resemble 2016.Here is the list of schedule for 2016
They all start from Rudesheim at 9:15 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The return from St Goar are at 10.55 a.m 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
On 17th September 2016,all departure times from Tour L3 were leaving one hour earlier because of the event "The Rhine in Flames". Check their site later for 2017.
Do you have any tours that are 7 days and start from Germany and end in Zurich or france
