It was built here from 11 November. A medieval castle was built in the 16th century. In the 19th century, using the old Zwinger walls, it was replaced by a new building, a mixture of fortress and modern castle.
The castle is occupied by over fifty scientific collections and many teaching, research and library rooms of cultural studies departments and is open to the public in the Museum of the University of Tübingen with prehistoric, prehistoric and early historical artifacts, for example the Upper Swabian pile buildings and the Ice Age World Heritage Sites of the Swabian Alb.
Here you will also find the only 4.8 large bird flock horse(s), which was discovered in 1931 during excavations led by the Tübingen archaeologist Gustav Riek (1900–1976) in the Lone Valley.

Tübingen is a very nice town with a beautiful center. From this center you can walk to the castle in less than 15 minutes.
The castle is not very special in itself but it gives a nice view over Tübingen and surroundings. The walk to it is also fun so definitely worth a visit.

It is beautifully located the view is fantastic! The exhibition is very interesting especially the Egypt exhibition I liked! I find the price of 5€ for this exhibition very cheap!!! If we had more time, I could and would have spent much longer there!!

On the way to the winter sports destination we made a stop in Tübingen. If you are here, well, then you have to walk to the castle. Nice walk to the top and from there you have a nice view of the city. The castle itself is beautiful to look at, but otherwise nothing special. It was already closed so I can't judge the inside, it looks like there are exhibits there.

The museum is only open on certain days so we could not go inside. We did go out into the garden which has a fantastic view of the town. It's also filled with shade trees and benches so you can enjoy your time there. The hike up to the castle is a steep walk up an uneven cobblestone street so it is definitely not for everyone.

Unfortunately we were here on a Tuesday, so the University of Tübingen Museum (MUT) was not open. The view of the valley is beautiful.
On the way there, in front of the Maugeneschtle restaurant, there is a bench with the inscription "Dohoggeddiadiaemmerdohogged". For non-Swabians, this translates as "There sit those who always sit there".

Höhentübingen Castle is an impressive building on a mountain spur largely in
renaissance style. It stands majestically on the same site where an older castle probably built in the eleventh century once stood. In order to accede to the Castle one must first walk along a beautiful fortified gateway dating back to the seventeenth century and go through a magnificent renaissance style portal designed by Christoph Jelin von Schwäbisch Gmünd. The portal is in line with the typical Roman triumphal arches. In its center the coat of arms of the Duke Friedrich, who ruled between 1593 and 1608, and had then the Castle turned into a military fortress, is outstanding. Once through that portal and after reaching the four wings inner courtyard, one is somewhat bewildered at the sight of the differences existing betwixt some of the said wings as far as their respective façades are concerned. The west and south wings consist in plastered walls decorated with frescoes whereas the half-timbered rest of the wings calls forth the relevant part of the original construction.
Happily enough the different wars and particularly the Thirty Year War had no serious impact on the Castle, which preserves its original features with the exception of the southwest tower which was blown up by the French in 1647, having been afterwards replaced by a pentagon-shaped one. The Tübingen University started using some rooms in the Castle at the beginning of the sixteenth century becoming shortly after the owner of the whole edifice. After a thorough renovation which took place in the last part of the twentieth century the Eberhard-Karls University allocated some of the Castle rooms to the Cultural Studies and Archaeology Departments. The east and north wings as well as the pentagon tower harbour nowadays some collections of the stated Departments whose pertinent removal to those wings resulted in the foundation of the Museum.
The relevant Museum in Hohentübingen was opened in 1997. The variety of items exhibited in the Museum is remarkable. About 4.600 objects are kept in it, referring some of them to Early and Late Prehistory. Others refer to classical archaeology, to egiptology, to ethnology and to Mesopotamia and Ancient Middle East subjects. It's really a fantastic pageantry, rich in manifold cultural aspects and historical backgrounds which can be of much use to enlighten interested people about the matters concerned.
The collection appertaining to the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology is of a particular interest due to the kind of articles it consists of. These originate from the Southwest Germany, though some come also from Africa, such as those regarding the Kohl-Larsen-Expeditions. Particular important are the Aurignacian ivory figurines discovered by Gustav Riek in the Vogenherd Cave insofar as they are among the oldest known artworks of mankind. Special mention within this section deserves the figurine of the mammouth and that of a wild horse. They are very nice statuettes.
The valuable collection about Mesopotamia cuneiform texts cover the writing development which took place in the Middle East between the 3rd and the 1st millenniums before Christ. It's therefore of an extraordinary importance inasmuch as those texts provide an insight into different types of literature from the ancient Middle East. There are also other items in that collection, such as original seals, small replicas of ancient sculptures and relief art. It's no doubt a priceless material in the scope of research into the divers types of literary culture ans social life in Mesopotamia. In addition to that, one of the items exhibited is a medallion calling forth Georg Grotefend, who was one of the pioneers of the ancient Middle East Studies and one of the first who deciphered parts of cuneiform world.
Again the Egyptian collection is a fabulous lot of large statues, pillars and mummy coffins. It's in fact one of the most important Egyptology university collections in Germany whose range is very broad as it includes a large variety of objects. Especially remarkable is the 1900 BC Idi coffin, whose lid is decorated with an extremely rare astronomical clock, as well as the offering chamber of the tomb of the official Seschemnefer III dating back to around 2400 BC.
Another interesting item in that Museum is a Stone Statue of a Man. It was found in a large Celtic grave. On the basis of the dagger and other features of the statue, the person depicted is likely to have been one of the highest ranking members of the Hallstatt Society.
Furthermore, the cast collection which is in the knight's hall, built in the 16th century, consists of replicas of the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures which are very beautiful.
The Classical Archaeology section embraces a large collection of Ancient Greek vases and the conspicuous hoplitodromos runner, a 2500 year old bronze statuette of a victorious Olympic athlete. At the sight of that artwork one may become dazzled.
In the former Castle kitchen there is the biochemical laboratory. It's there where Friedrich Miescher discovered the “nucleus”, the DNA substance. The room is interesting thanks particularly to its renaissance vaults. As a matter of fact, it's a small biochemistry museum which can be visited freely.
As may be gathered from the foregoing, the visit to the Castle and the Museum is highly fascinating and therefore strongly recommended. The large range of precious objects there exhibited makes the said visit mandatory while in Tübingen on account of the very interesting and illustrative nature of those objects.

I'd say around 1 hour ... although you could potentially stay for a few hours if you wanted to relax up there with a picnic and enjoy the views. Plenty of lovely gardens to sit in.
