On the drive out from Colva back to Pune we decided to visit the Mahadev Temple in the forests of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. We had to take a left turn off the Anmod Ghat Highway, at Dharbandora, and drive along a narrow forested road of the sanctuary for 23 km. The road was very smooth and scenic through tiny villages and giant trees on both sides. It took us about half an hour to get to the temple parking area from Dharbandora.
The small temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and was built in the 12th century by the Kadambas, and is one of the only Hindu temples to have survived the ravages of the Muslim and Portuguese invaders of Goa, in its original form. The presiding deity in the form of a Lingam is mounted on a pedestal in the inner sanctum. Bas-relief figures of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, with their respective consorts appear on panels at the sides of the temple. There is a headless Nandi Bull at the centre of the mandap. The temple is surrounded by well kept lawns and plenty of greenery and is maintained by the ASI. A small river runs by the temple.
The temple is a short walk from the parking area through a well kept pathway. There are some small snacks and drinks stalls and a public washroom near the parking lot. The temple does not have many other commercial stalls selling puja offerings, nor any pujaris and beggars trying to relieve you of your belongings, so it is a very good place for a pure darshan of the Gods, either in the form of stone or natural beauty. Beware of the friendly monkeys though.

The best temple to visit if you are in Goa. Surrounded by nature with cool environment. Any person can visit this beautiful place as there are no restrictions. If want to know more about the place, a guide is available to feed you the history. A very safe place and also a very clean place.

The historic temple stood magnificently in its well kept grounds. However the surrounding area and river trails were drowning in litter. On going down to the river's edge, the bank was covered in litter and 'soft stones'. Very unhygienic and not suitable for children.
The fast food outlet had litter piling up, and the monkeys sifted through the pile of rubbish.

While returning to Pune from South Goa, we decided to visit this temple. There is a deviation to left from the main road for this place, exactly opposite ( on the right) is the deviation for dudhasagar falls.
Since, we were just 3 (Husband, Wife and small kid) so there was always a concern about safety and whether the place is isolated etc.
It is pretty safe and at around 11.5 kms distance from the main road - takes approx. 30 mins to reach. Since, the way is via a dense wildlife sanctuary so it is always advisable to visit/ return during daylight. However, we understood from locals that the entry is restricted post 5:30-6pm but ppl do return by 9-10 pm.
It's a beautiful, well maintained temple without any sadhus/Sants etc - so very non-commercial and a quiet place to visit.
Outside the temple premises, one can have tea/snacks to their liking!

It's a bit of a journey unless you are on a tour but this tiny temples is worth a visit because it will get you away from the bustle of the beaches and towns and into the countryside where you will realize this is why this temple survived the Muslim and Christian invasions...

Located off Goa-Belgaum highway, this is 12th centaury temple still a place of worship with daily pooja happening. It’s in the middle of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, so one do encounter wild life on the way.
In monsoon season the close by waterfall will be beautiful place to visit. One can do a trek in surrounding jungle with local guide.

It is reported that it is the oldest temple in Goa, Tambdi Surla is a temple of Lord Shiva built in the 12th century. This temple is a masterpiece for its unique style of construction. It is the only monument of Kadamba-Yadava architecture.
Approximately 65 km from the capital of the city of Panaji. The temple is made out of black basalt.
It is visited by hundreds of tourists and locals every year. However, it is still an unknown destination amongst common tourists. It is visited by hundreds of tourists and locals every year. However, it is still an unknown destination amongst common tourists.

If you are planning to stay overnight at Tambdi Surla then you can think of taking a booking with Nature’s nest resort they will help arrange everything.
If you are staying elsewhere better start early as you need at least 90 to 120 minutes to reach the temple. Arrange car and guide through some travel agency in advance . It’s very sparsely inhabited so one cannot get a guide on site.
About the trek I cannot comment as I couldn’t do it.
