The Sa Dec market is a not-to-be-missed experience! It's lively, vibrant and not for the faint at heart. Due to the lack of refrigeration, locals purchase their food daily, some of it still alive, up until its purchased. It's a fun place to take photos, but keep your eyes open for the copious motos!!

This is a huge market, the largest on the Mekong River! There’s lot to see. It easily raining when we were there and everyone was inside including several people on their motorcycles. It was a tight squeeze, probably not when sunny. It was an interesting experience and highly recommend going.

What a feast for the senses, overflowing with vibrant colors, fresh scents, and bustling activity. At the heart of it all lies the fresh produce section, where locals gather to select the ripest fruits and vegetables. The aroma of freshly baked bread and roasted coffee wafts through the air. It's a true reflection of the region's rich agricultural heritage and a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of the people who call the Mekong Delta home.

We visited the market as a small tour group during our Mekong River cruise.
The market is huge and it’s bustling with life. You can quite honestly just stand and watch and observe local life going on right in front and all at you - just fascinating.
The front of the market is bright and colourful fruit and vegetables, all beautifully displayed. Large parts of the market is under cover - nice and comfortable shaded from the sun and heat.
In the fresh meat section you will see stalls processing fresh/ live frogs, freshly skinned rats (although you’d never know they were rats as they look more like rabbits).
There is also a small section of live baby chickens and baby ducks.
Near the far side of the market are stalls selling cooking staples etc.
The whole market is very clean and very safe to wander around- I’d definitely feel perfectly safe walking around on my own (without the tour group).
This was one of my favourite stops during the 7 day river cruise.

This very crowded wet market sells everything from
Fruits, Vegetables, Rice, raw meats, live fish, live chickens, live turtles etc.
I recommend closed toe shoes, and a protective face mask . Be aware of motorbikes passing in close quarters.

Visited the market and it was a shock to the non Asian. They were shocked to see the range and variety of seafood and poultry. The fresh fruit was wonderful and tasty. A wonderful place to visit.

Really interesting to wander around this traditional market, loads of fresh produce, great fresh looking fruit and vegetable. Plenty of live produce, including fish, snakes, ducks, chickens. People were really friendly, in spite us getting in the way!! Probably a shock to people who expect their food pre-prepared and wrapped in plastic!

If you want to see a REAL local market with a preponderance of locals doing their daily buying and selling of foodstuffs, this is the best we saw in 7 days along the Mekong and day trips to Saigon (Vietnam) and Siem Reap (Cambodia). Fascinating mix of all kinds of meats -- cow, pig, fowl, snake, fish, insects, frogs, and some I couldn't readily identify -- and vegetables.

I loved walking through this very local market. The locals want their food to be very fresh so the animals are kept alive and killed right before they are brought home. The oddest thing we saw were skinned rats!

My worry is the dog meat trade.....do they sell dog meat at these markets just so I know to avoid!! Thanks

For as far as I am aware, no dog meat is traded at the Sa Dec market (or at any similar markets that I've visited). I actually haven't seen dog meat at all during my visit of the Mekong delta. They sell life fish and frogs though.

Planning to go to the Mekong Delta in May and would like to know how we can get from Cai Be to Sa Dec using public transportation or cheap option to take the boat avoiding the touristic pre-arranged cruises?

I personally would skip Cai Be. It is nothing like the Sadec market. Except it is floating. There are no tuk tuk's and I saw no cabs. You might could rent a motor bike but you' sure need to know how to use one. I don't think it's that far of a walk but I could be wrong about that
