We had an amazing day with Lux as our guide in the national park.
It was our first day in Cambodia and he was so friendly, professional and knowledgeable, able to answer all our questions about Cambodia. He showed us the beautiful waterfall that we had lovely swim in. The thousand linga on the riverbed were very special to see. The views from the cliffs in the national park were extraordinary!
We then visited a Buddhist temple with the giant lying down Buddha. Lux told us all about the traditions etc.
In our way back to Siem Reap, we stopped at a local restaurant and on Lux’s recommendation we ordered a traditional Cambodian dish, amok. Delicious!
If you have only one free day in Siem Reap I would highly recommend going with Lux on the Kulen National Park tour.

You should get there as early as possible, because of access restrictions from 11 am and because of the crowd. We were there on a weekday at the end of November (beginning of the dry season / high-season), in my view a very good visit time as there is still a lot of greenery and a lot of water. At the end of the dry season it is probably not so nice, weekends should also be avoided - there is too much going on. At 8 am we left with the taxi driver or guide at the hotel, at 9.45 we were there. I certainly wouldn't want to ride the TukTuk or the scooter - that's too far, too strenuous and saved at the wrong end.
First we were on the lookout rock, mega-great there. Then a short hike along the river with the 1000 Lingas, then the temple with the lying Buddha - also all very nicely done and an interesting atmosphere there. It was by no means overcrowded and also not particularly littered, but whoever is looking - will certainly find 😉. After the lookout rock, the waterfalls were the 2nd largest. Highlight, the big waterfall is sensational - if it has water. Pictures are already set enough.
At 12.15pm we went back again, at 2pm we were at the hotel. It was a great half day trip that was definitely worth it.
The trip cost us $70 for taxi/guide and $20 admission per person. And yes, that is rather expensive - but that is the cost of admission to Cambodia in general. But if you want to save maximum money, it is best to stay completely at home 😂.

If you want a little different experience from just the temple hopping in Siem Reap then this place is for you.
We enquired at our hotel and they were helpful to take us to purchase the admission tickets - its $20. Also best to go in the morning as after 12pm the returning vehicles will take up most of the route.
It's a very picturesque place with the lookout and then the river with the 1000 Lingas, the natural spring, the temple of the reclining Buddha and the Kulen Waterfalls. There is a considerable amount of walking and climbing involved especially to go up to the Temple of the reclining Buddha and also down to the larger of the two waterfalls.
We were happy to see the beautiful Lingas despite it being the rainy season and the waterfalls were in full force, a little crowded but still worth the climb down to it.
You end up spending almost the entire day at the mountain so do it if you have a free day in your travel as it is away from the Siem Reap town centre.

Phnom Kulen National Park is located approximately 60 kilometers from Siem Reap. This pristine natural area covers over 37,000 hectares of lush forests, cascading waterfalls, archaeological sites, and ancient temples. The park is considered sacred by the Khmer people, as it is believed to be the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire.
We went there in the morning as a part of our guided tour. Keep this in mind, the park road is only one way. Between 8-12 a.m travellers can go up the road. After 12 a.m they shut the entrance. Only travellers can go down. We visited Reclining Buddah, 1000 Lingas, and a waterfall. The waterfall was a bit crowded and noisy, but the natural beauty makes it still attractive. We saw so many butterflies and had an enjoyable time there. When we came back, we visited a mountain cliff. The scenery was amazing.

(5) Phnom Kulen
Phnom Penhelen is located in Bar Lin, 60 km from Siem Reap and 25 km from Van Peer Isra'i. It originally commemorated the 802th anniversary of independence from Java and the birth of the Anchor Empire, and was called the "Bahandrabata", which means the sacred mountain, by Jaibarman II (802-850).
The hills of this mountain were the capital of the Khmer Empire, which lasted half a century to be transferred to the 'Hariharaja', now known as the Rolos. There are more than 20 small mountains, including the Tolsen Circle, where King Angkor built his first pyramid, but it is difficult to access. There are still many important temples around the mountain.

My bestie and I talked to our Tuk Tuk driver, and told him that we wanted to do the Phnom Kulen National Park, with a stop at the Reclining Buddha, 1000 Lingas, and one of the scenic overlooks. He set us up with his brother who had a car and he took care of us for the entire day on our own time. Be advised, it is only ONE WAY traffic going to the park. Morning traffic is inbound, and then they shut the road down, so no one else can go up and everyone can come down. So you will need to spend the day here, and you have to go in the morning.
The park was stunning, the waterfalls were gorgeous, and the hospitality everywhere was incredible. Definitely bring a bunch of cash with you, and a ton of water. There's only a couple of places that you can stop to get food or drink, and they were cash only vendors. Definitely leave a donation at the Buddha site so that they can continue to keep it clean and operational, and have socks with you because you have to take your shoes off when you visit the religious areas (shoulders and knees must also be covered! Bring a sarong and a cover top)

The waterfall is absolutely beautiful and worth the trip to see. Swimming in the celadon colored pools below the falls was a trip highlight and the gorgeous butterflies in vast preponderance made it magical. It was a little touristy and crowded but that did not detract from the pleasure of having experienced it.

Hi
We are considering this trip on our final day in Siem Reap/Cambodia before onward travel.
How far (distance/time) is the new Siem Reap Ankor airport from Phnom Kulen?

Is it too cold to swim in December? I am planning a trip by Dec 28 - 31.
If water is too cold, I might choose another location instead.
Đã viết vào 16 tháng 8, 2019
Well, i thought it was cold and it was a bright sunny day too.
Think you should prepare your swimming stuff ie bring it with you. But if you feel its cold then dont go in.
You should go here as the water feeding the waterfalls is the 1000 lingga river, dont miss that.

Where in Siem Reap can I book a tour for this? Or am I best doing it myself by hiring someone to take me there and back? Any tips?
Đã viết vào 27 tháng 1, 2019
Don't go yourself, it will cost you a lot. Many travel agencies all over Siem Reap. Just book with one of them.

Bonjour
.

We will be travelling with a 20month old. How comfortable will it be? Any tips and suggestions?
Đã viết vào 25 tháng 8, 2018
We took our 14 month old. The ride from the city is long and can be bumpy, but we just tried our best to keep him occupied. Lots of snacks and water did the trick. We also skipped the stroller and carried him at the actual site. Honestly, it’s not very baby friendly. Lots of uneven steps and rocky terrain. But overall still a lovely place to visit.

Hello,
can you access by yourself in a small group or is a booked tour the best option? Any idea of cost if you can do by yourself?
Thanks :)
Đã viết vào 21 tháng 6, 2018
It's probably easier to join a tour and cheaper than hiring a car and driver for the day to do it yourself.

Hello Monigates
Thank you for your review on Kulen Mountain, we would like to visit this site, we are a couple aged 69 and 74, reasonably fit, in your opinion would the Kulen Mountain be doable for us?
Thanks again.

Hi Linda, I will be going to Siem Reap this April and this is my first time there. Besides the Angkor Thom, I will spend half day (from morning till 3:00pm) in the Phnom Kulen Nationa Park. Bu I can hardly find a Park map or guide on different sites. If by chance your have one, could you please upload it. Also to your experience, how should I spend my around 6 hours in this Park? Thank you.

hello
i hope you're not going to both angkor thom & phnom kulen national park on the same day. both places requires different tickets for entrance.
phnom kulen is usd20
angkor is usd37
phnom kulen cover 3 places, the buddha temple, 1000lingas river & waterfall. you can have your lunch at the waterfall. food shop is plenty. phnom kulen is approximately 2.5hrs from city. so, even if you start at 8am, you will only be back to hotel at around 4 or 5pm. if u make it to the city before 5pm, u can go straight to the ticketing counter to purchase the angkor wat ticket for next day.
i don't have any map right now but the hotels will usually have plenty of information brochures, tour packages, transports & more. no worries. most of them speak basic english so you can get around even by your own. i hope this helps. but if you need guide to arrange things before you arrive (as what we did), we just googled for info and found a local english speaking tour guide.
